Mission Description	Dance Theatre of Harlem has occupied a distinguished position in the New York City cultural landscape and at the forefront of American artistic achievement for 45 years. Established in New York in 1969 and inspired by the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dance Theatre of Harlem began as a community school for the allied arts and continues as a strong economic and cultural anchor for Harlem. The founders were the late Karel Shook and Arthur Mitchell, the first African American to become a principal dancer with a major U.S. ballet company (New York City Ballet). DTH's mission is to: - Maintain a world-class school that trains young people in classical ballet and the allied arts; - Provide arts education, community outreach programs, and positive role models for all; and - Present a ballet Company of African American and other racially diverse artists who perform the most demanding repertory at the highest level of quality. Description	Dancing Through Barriers (Arts Education & Community Engagement) -dance Theatre of Harlem is dedicated to reaching young people and communities with powerful arts and education programs, which provide tools that foster self-actualization, a holistic world view, and empowerment through critical thinking and reflection. The Dancing Through Barriers programs serve over 10,000 children from public, charter and private schools annually, through in-school and after-school residencies and other programs developed in accordance with the New York City Department of Education's "Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts and the National Core Curriculum Standards. Other activities include School-Time Performances and assemblies held in school auditoriums that include quality thematic performances, interactive activities for students and Lecture Demonstrations that highlight the art and science of ballet. The Sunday Matine series offers neighbors near and far the chance to experience high-quality performances by DTH students, dancers and special guest artists. Thursdays @ DTH open rehearsal series gives the community an insider's look at art making and a chance to meet and talk with the dancers, choreographers, and Harlem-based artists. Description	Dance Theatre of Harlem School - Dance Theatre of Harlem is dedicated to providing access to exceptional ballet and dance training to the 500+ students of all ages who attend the School each year. The Dance Theatre of Harlem School is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance and is listed an Institution of Higher Education by the U.S. Department of Education. The School holds a 32 week Winter Session and two summer intensive programs in New York City and one in Detroit in partnership with the Detroit Opera House. Each December and May the School mounts full productions at local theaters for family members and the general public drawing over 2,500 audience members. Over 98% of students graduate high school compared with the 66% New York City and 42% Harlem averages. The vast majority go onto institutions of higher learning, many receiving scholarships. In the dance world our alumni can be seen in such companies as The Royal Ballet and on Broadway, in addition to the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company. The School's approach is based on the belief that every child can be empowered through a quality and affordable dance training that builds confidence and life skills through mastery and a "whole dancer" curriculum - whether or not he or she ultimately chooses a career path inside the performing arts. Description	Dance Theatre of Harlem Company - Touring nationally and internationally, Dance Theatre of Harlem's professional ballet Company returned to the world's stages in 2012 and is comprised of 18 racially diverse dancers who perform an eclectic and demanding repertoire at the highest level under the directorship of former prima ballerina and now DTH Artistic Director, Virginia Johnson. Audiences across the country have welcomed the acclaimed Company with extraordinary warmth and enthusiasm. Uncertain Tax Positions	Form 990, schedule D, part X, Line 2	U.S. GAAP requires management to evaluate uncertain tax positions taken by Dance Theatre. The financial statement effects of a tax position are recognized when the position is more-likely-than-not, based on the technical merits, to be sustained upon examination by the Internal Revenue Service. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by Dance Theatre and has concluded that as of June 30, 2013, there are no uncertain positions taken or expected to be taken. Dance Theatre has recognized no interest or penalties related to uncertain tax positions. Dance Theatre is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. Management believes it is no longer subject to income tax examinations for years prior to 2009.

form 990, part vi, Line 12c	A Conflict of Interest policy is published in the DTH Personnel Manual which is made available to staff and the board of directors. The COI policy contains definition and examples of conflict situations. The COI policy states: "Any potential conflict of interest which could result in a director or indirect financial or personal benefit to a director, officer, or staff member must be disclosed in good faith or known to Dance Theatre of Harlem or committee authorizing a contract or other transaction." Examples cited include: having a financial interest in any business transaction with Dance Theatre of Harlem; owning or having a significant financial interest in, or other relationship with, a Dance Theatre of Harlem competitor, customer or supplier, and accepting gifts, entertainment or other benefit of more than a nominal value from Dance Theatre of Harlem competitor, customer or supplier." In recent years, there has been no such instance.
