DescriptionEducation Programs and Community OutreachDuring the past year, the museum frequently partnered with Coachella Valley school districts and colleges, public libraries, and local city governments, and we hosted Free Thursday Evenings in conjunction with the weekly VillageFest street fair in downtown Palm Springs, which often includes free film screenings. A Free 2nd Sundays program continues on the second Sunday of each month at which the museum offers special family activities, artist demonstrations, and films in addition to its regular exhibitions. In October, the Museum hosted its annual Da de los Muertos / Day of the Dead Celebration which attracted 5,800 visitors on that single day. With our new facility in Palm Desert, educational programming increased with Art Lab, Art Party in Palm Desert as well as continuing our Da de los Muertos / Day of the Dead celebration in Palm Desert, which served 801 visitors. The total number of clients served by all Education Programs is in excess of 43,000 Coachella Valley residents.Adult Education Programs In addition to docent-led tours of the galleries and special exhibitions, adults participated in art workshops in drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media; evening lectures in the Annenberg Theater and weekend symposia; Osher Lifelong Learning Classes; free community days, and outreach programs.Youth Program attendance for the fiscal year included approximately 20,000 students and children who participated in free school tours geared to specific age levels and curricula, childrens education programs, free community days, and those who visited the museum with their family or to complete school assignments.Specialized museum education programs serving youth this past year included:Art Within Reach (outreach to 9 schools in PSUSD with three visits plus one museum visit and 13 preschool sites)KidStudio Projects (an after-school program for children in grades 1-6) ArtVentures (multi-visit after school program for grades 2-5)Museum Art Camp (for children ages 3-12) Eyes On/Hands On (specialized 1-hour docent-led tour of the museum galleries followed by an art-making project in our art studios)Teen Docent (academic extra-curricular enrichment activity for high school students who tour elementary school children)Zone 101 (a community gallery and activity space for children, families, adults and the community)Description

Part XPart X : FIN48 FootnoteThe Museum is exempt from federal income and California franchise taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and Section 23701(d) of the State Revenue and Taxation Code, respectively. The Museum's policy is to record income tax related interest and penalties in operating expenses. For the year ended September 30, 2013, there was no interest or penalties expense recorded and no accrued interest or penalties. The Museum's Form 990, Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax, are subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service, generally for three years after they are filed. The Museum's Form 199, California Exempt Organization Annual Information Return, are subject to examination by the Franchise Tax Board, generally for four years after they are filed.
Part III, Line 1aPart III, Line 1a: If organization elected under SFAS 116 to not report are, historical treasures, oThe Museum's collections comprise more than 8,000 objects and works of art including sculptures, paintings, drawings, graphics, photographs, ceramics, and contemporary glass; Native American baskets, weavings, pottery and artifacts; Mesoamerican artifacts; and architectural drawings and archives. In addition, it includes the Stephen Willard Photography Archives and Bill Anderson Photographic Archives, totaling approximately 40,000 images. The collections are maintained for public exhibition, education, research, and the furtherance of public service rather than for financial gain. The Museum's collections, acquired through donations and through purchases, are not recognized as assets in the accompanying financial statements. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in the appropriate net asset classification in the year of acquisition. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the financial statements. Proceeds from the sale of art are recorded as increases in the appropriate net asset classification in the year of sale and are reserved for the acquisition of works of art.The following amounts are the purchase price or the fair market value at the time of the gift to the Museum at September 30, 2013:Art $45,181,059; Anthropology $1,893,698; Reserve $1,196,055; Library and other items $168,707; Items held for deaccession $274,933; Albert Frey House $416,158.Collection items consist of art objects that are held for educational and curatorial purposes. Each of the items is cataloged, preserved, and cared for. Activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. Collection items acquired either through purchase or donation are not capitalized. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets if purchased with unrestricted assets and as decreases in temporarily restricted or permanently restricted net assets if purchased with donor-restricted assets. Contributions of collection items are not recognized in the statement of activities. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected on the statement of activities based on the absence or existence and nature of donor-imposed restrictions. Collection items are protected, kept unencumbered, cared for, and preserved. The fair market values of the works acquired through contributions were $1,789,412 (unaudited) during the year ended September 30, 2013.Proceeds from the sale of deaccessioned items was $280,588 for the years ended September 30, 2013. Collections purchased were $926,270 during the year ended September 30, 2013.As part of a financial recovery plan approved by the Board of Trustees in June 2005, works of art not deemed to be strategic were deaccessioned from the collection. It was agreed by the Board that deaccessioning proceeds would be credited to the art acquisition account, be used to repay external debt, be allowed for a limited time, and that the borrowings from the account would be repaid over time. The deaccessioning procedures were discussed with the American Association of Museums and with the Accreditation Committee in February 2007.Funds were then borrowed from the Art Acquisition account to repay the Museum's external debts. As of September 30, 2013, a balance of $993,717 remains to be reimbursed to the art acquisition account as funds become available. Commencing in 2007 it was determined by the Board that any new deaccessioned funds raised by the Museum would be maintained in a segregated account and would be strictly for the acquisition of works of art. As of September 30, 2013, all proceeds from the sale of new deaccessioned art were either expended for the purchase of art or remain in the segregated account.

IdentifierIdentifierExplanationExplanation
Part I, Line 33, Revenues Not ReportedAs a service to museums, most auction houses will either waive their commission entirely or charge a very minimal fee (one or two percent of the sale price), and the same goes for expenses such as shipping, photography, etc.
Part I, Line 32, Hire and Use of Third PartiesFor the sale (deaccession) of works of art in the permanent collection we provide documentation on the work to commercial auction houses (usually three) and ask them for a proposal for the sale of the work, including information on the marketing of the sale, pre-auction estimates of sale price, and their financial terms (their commission, expenses charged to us, etc.). A public auction of the work is widely considered in the museum world generally to be the most transparent and lucrative way to handle a sale, although occasionally other means are employed, such as a trade.
