Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Form 990, Part I, Line 1 and Part III, Line 1John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum (the "Library") is the nation's official memorial to the thirty-fifth President. The Library, which was constructed with private funds donated by the public, is administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. The Library receives an annual federal appropriation for building maintenance and a portion of its personnel costs. The balance of their financial support is provided by income generated from museum admission fees, museum store sales, usage fees for the library's meeting facilities and, through the generosity of thousands of private individuals, corporations, and foundations who donate money and in-kind services to The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation ("Foundation"). In 2016, the foundation contributed approximately 40%, or $6.7 million, of the library and foundation's combined $16.8 million operating budget, including in-kind programmatic support. The development and administrative costs of the operations of the library and museum is roughly estimated to be 12% of the combined budget costs. The Library and the Foundation are united in a common mission to perpetuate President Kennedy's ideal that political and public service be conducted and exemplified as an honorable and patriotic profession. The Foundation, representing a wide variety of constituencies within the general public, works closely with the Library to develop programs that advance the study and understanding of President Kennedy's life and the times in which he lived; and that promote a greater appreciation of America's political and cultural heritage, the process of governing, and the importance of public service. The private financial support provided by the Foundation enables the federal government to expand the Library's research and archival capacity, to undertake marketing and public information projects, to offer intern and research fellowship programs, to enhance its museum and exhibits, and to offer nationally recognized educational and public programming. In addition to its support of the Library, the Foundation directly sponsors programs and activities that help people understand the major challenges facing democracy today; that inspire current and future generations to political participation and public service; and that promote debate and discussion of issues at the heart of contemporary democracy that relate to the legacy of President John F. Kennedy. The close relationship between the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum and the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation illustrates the benefits to society and the American taxpayer that accrue from such public/private partnerships. Mission Statement The primary mission of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation is to support the work of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum whose core function is to collect, preserve, and make accessible for research the documents, audiovisual materials, and historical artifacts of President Kennedy, his family, and his contemporaries. Long Range Strategic Plan Vision To inspire the world to "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Mission To inspire public service, civic responsibility, civil rights, scientific discovery and creative cultural pursuits by preserving and promoting the legacy of President John F. Kennedy; to engage new and established audiences so they may learn how to translate these legacies into action.
FORM 990 PART III LINE 4AArchives and Digital Archives, Library, and Museum Support $1,315,013 Museum The Museums resources in 2016 were dedicated to the planning, design, fabrication, and installation of a major exhibition, entitled "Ernest Hemingway: Between Two Wars," the first ever devoted to the life and work of Ernest Hemingway. The exhibition was a collaboration between the Morgan Library & Museum in New York and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. The exhibit, showcasing the Library's Hemingway collection, featured a trove of rarely exhibited material, including multiple drafts of the writers major works, correspondence with a legendary circle of expatriate writers living in 1920s Paris, as well as photographs and a selection of Hemingways personal belongings. It opened at the Morgan Library in September 2015 to critical acclaim. In April 2016, an expanded version of the exhibit opened at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and was on display until December 31, 2016. Attendance at the Museum increased 19% during this exhibition year. Legacy Room The main gallery of the Museum concludes with the Legacy Room. Currently, visitors in this room discover how world governments honored the memory of President Kennedy, and how programs, individuals, ideas, and words associated with him resonate today. President Kennedy's legacy cannot be summed up in a static display and in 2016 the Foundation began to explore ways in which to create a dynamic space, celebrating the ongoing relevance of his ideas and actions by highlighting the world events that were set in motion through his life work. Archives and Digital Archives Digital Archives The primary focus of the digital archives program is to provide worldwide access to the Papers of John F. Kennedy his personal, pre-presidential, and presidential papers - and to the White House Photographs. In 2016, the following work was performed: digitized 12 boxes of the White House Central Subject Files (Agriculture, Arts, Atomic Energy, Outer Space, and Business Economic Series); 32 boxes of the Meetings and Memoranda Series of the National Security Files; cataloged 21 of 24 boxes from the Speeches and Press Series of John F. Kennedy's Senate Files; cataloged 1,281 photographs and digitized an additional 1,347 negatives; cataloged 28 digitized oral histories for the website; digitized and cataloged on demand 508 folders of textual documents for researchers; and digitized, cataloged, and integrated 974 pages of declassified documents into existing digital collections. An online media gallery entitled, "Gifts from the People," was completed by the digital archives staff. In addition, to the above the Digital Archives staff wrote blog posts for Archivally Speaking, a feature on the Library's website: "'The business of Every Citizen: President John F. Kennedy Stumps for Democratic Candidates in 1962," February 24, 2016; "Setting the stage: Communications Staff Prepare for Presidential Travel," August 4, 2016; "Authority Catalogers-in-Training at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library," August 19, 2016; and "Digitization of Photographs from President John F. Kennedy's Trip to Germany," December 17, 2016. Archives Internship Program The Archives Internship Program is a stipend-based program in which Archives staff members provide one-on-one training/supervision to graduate students in all areas of archival practice. The work described in the above section was ably assisted by the Foundation support of 14 student interns from Simmons College, Northeastern University, and the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Audiovisual Processing interns assisted in integrating several hundred sound recordings into 15 different collections of personal papers; inventorying more than 2,000 magnetic sound and moving image items in the Edward M. Kennedy Senate Files; and processing the Carl Gray Collection. Oral History interns assisted in transcribing and publishing to the website 215 oral history interviews comprising 8,872 pages. And he spoke often about it, especially after he was elected to the highest office in our land. If there is one phrase that captures the essence of his presidency and the meaning of citizenship as he saw it, it is the ringing phrase in his Inaugural Address, so my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country." In keeping with President Kennedy's sentiments, each year the Foundation in collaboration with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, hosts naturalization ceremonies at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Following the ceremony, the new citizens and their families are invited to join in a celebratory reception. In 2016, there were 6 naturalization ceremonies in which 1,060 people became new citizens of the United States. Centennial Commission In July 2016 legislation was passed to establish the John F. Kennedy Centennial Commission. The Commission will plan, develop, and carry out activities to honor President Kennedy on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2017. The Foundation, working with the Commission, will utilize the Centennial celebration to connect the world with the timeless values President Kennedy championed and their continued relevance today.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4dAwards Program - $565,223 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award recognizes a public official(s) at the federal, state, or local level whose actions demonstrate the qualities of politically courageous leadership in the spirit of Profiles in Courage, President Kennedy's 1957 Pulitzer prize-winning book, which recounts the stories of eight U.S. Senators who risked their careers by embracing unpopular positions for the greater good. The award has become the premiere award in the political arena. A distinguished bi-partisan committee named by the Foundation reviews all nominations, and selects the recipient(s) of the award. In order to exponentially increase public engagement with the Profile in Courage Award and the ideal it conveys, the Foundation's Communications and Awards Program staff worked closely with the digital firm, Precision Strategies, planning and executing strategies for the award nomination period, announcement, ceremony, and year-round awareness. These strategies included tactics executed via email, paid media and social media and resulted in: 4,400 nominations in 2016 more than quadruple the number of nominations in 2015; reached more than 112,000 people as part of our Facebook Livestream of the award ceremony; our Twitter efforts garnered over 164,000 impressions; our Snapchat filter received over 2,000 impressions; and over 1,200 people congratulated the 2016 awardee through a form available on the new microsite close to double the number of well-wishers in 2015. In 2016, the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award was awarded to Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy. Governor Malloy could have chosen the politically expedient course and remained silent on the highly charged, controversial issue of refugee resettlement and national security. Instead, amid security concerns following the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris and in a direct challenge to those calling for the United States to close the doors on Syrian refugees, Governor Malloy announced that Connecticut would continue to accept refugees from Syria and personally welcomed a family of Syrian refugees to New Haven after they had been turned away by another state. John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest The Profile in Courage Essay Contest, a companion program of the Profile in Courage Award, invites U.S. high school students to describe and analyze an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1956, the year Profiles in Courage was published. The essay contest meets curriculum requirements and Common Core standards in English and history, and annually drives a high level of engagement among several thousand high school students, hundreds of history and English teachers, and nearly 100 community volunteers who serve as readers for the contest. In 2016, 2,070 essays were submitted from students in all fifty states and Washington, DC, and from United States citizens in Canada, England, and South Korea. This represents an 8% increase over the 2015 submissions. The top ten essays were selected after three rounds of judging and the final selection of the first-place winner was made by the Profile in Courage Award Committee. Zhen Tu, a junior at the Eagan High School in Eagan Minnesota, wrote her award-winning essay on the political courage of former U.S. Senator Howard Baker of Tennessee. John F. Kennedy New Frontier Awards The John F. Kennedy New Frontier Awards were created in 2003 by the Foundation and the Institute of Politics at Harvard University to celebrate the nobility and importance of careers in public service by recognizing outstanding public leaders under the age of 40 who exemplify the spirit of President Kennedy. The New Frontier Awards, presented annually to an elected and a non-elected public servant, aim to engage younger audiences and to inspire public service and civic engagement among young Americans. The awardees in 2016 were Mayor Aja Brown of Compton, California and Max Kenner, the founder and executive director of the Bard Prison Initiative.
