<ExplanationTxt>John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum (the "Library") is the nation's official memorial to the thirty-fifth President. The Library, which was constructed with private funds donated by the public, is administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. The Library receives an annual federal appropriation for building maintenance and a portion of its personnel costs. The balance of their financial support is provided by income generated from museum admission fees, museum store sales, usage fees for the library's meeting facilities and, through the generosity of thousands of private individuals, corporations, and foundations who donate money and in-kind services to The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation ("Foundation"). In 2016, the foundation contributed approximately 40%, or $6.7 million, of the library and foundation's combined $16.8 million operating budget, including in-kind programmatic support. The development and administrative costs of the operations of the library and museum is roughly estimated to be 12% of the combined budget costs. The Library and the Foundation are united in a common mission to perpetuate President Kennedy's ideal that political and public service be conducted and exemplified as an honorable and patriotic profession. The Foundation, representing a wide variety of constituencies within the general public, works closely with the Library to develop programs that advance the study and understanding of President Kennedy's life and the times in which he lived; and that promote a greater appreciation of America's political and cultural heritage, the process of governing, and the importance of public service. The private financial support provided by the Foundation enables the federal government to expand the Library's research and archival capacity, to undertake marketing and public information projects, to offer intern and research fellowship programs, to enhance its museum and exhibits, and to offer nationally recognized educational and public programming. In addition to its support of the Library, the Foundation directly sponsors programs and activities that help people understand the major challenges facing democracy today; that inspire current and future generations to political participation and public service; and that promote debate and discussion of issues at the heart of contemporary democracy that relate to the legacy of President John F. Kennedy. The close relationship between the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum and the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation illustrates the benefits to society and the American taxpayer that accrue from such public/private partnerships. Mission Statement The primary mission of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation is to support the work of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum whose core function is to collect, preserve, and make accessible for research the documents, audiovisual materials, and historical artifacts of President Kennedy, his family, and his contemporaries. Long Range Strategic Plan Vision To inspire the world to "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Mission To inspire public service, civic responsibility, civil rights, scientific discovery and creative cultural pursuits by preserving and promoting the legacy of President John F. Kennedy; to engage new and established audiences so they may learn how to translate these legacies into action.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Archives and Digital Archives, Library, and Museum Support $1,315,013 Museum The Museums resources in 2016 were dedicated to the planning, design, fabrication, and installation of a major exhibition, entitled "Ernest Hemingway: Between Two Wars," the first ever devoted to the life and work of Ernest Hemingway. The exhibition was a collaboration between the Morgan Library & Museum in New York and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. The exhibit, showcasing the Library's Hemingway collection, featured a trove of rarely exhibited material, including multiple drafts of the writers major works, correspondence with a legendary circle of expatriate writers living in 1920s Paris, as well as photographs and a selection of Hemingways personal belongings. It opened at the Morgan Library in September 2015 to critical acclaim. In April 2016, an expanded version of the exhibit opened at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and was on display until December 31, 2016. Attendance at the Museum increased 19% during this exhibition year. Legacy Room The main gallery of the Museum concludes with the Legacy Room. Currently, visitors in this room discover how world governments honored the memory of President Kennedy, and how programs, individuals, ideas, and words associated with him resonate today. President Kennedy's legacy cannot be summed up in a static display and in 2016 the Foundation began to explore ways in which to create a dynamic space, celebrating the ongoing relevance of his ideas and actions by highlighting the world events that were set in motion through his life work. Archives and Digital Archives Digital Archives The primary focus of the digital archives program is to provide worldwide access to the Papers of John F. Kennedy his personal, pre-presidential, and presidential papers - and to the White House Photographs. In 2016, the following work was performed: digitized 12 boxes of the White House Central Subject Files (Agriculture, Arts, Atomic Energy, Outer Space, and Business Economic Series); 32 boxes of the Meetings and Memoranda Series of the National Security Files; cataloged 21 of 24 boxes from the Speeches and Press Series of John F. Kennedy's Senate Files; cataloged 1,281 photographs and digitized an additional 1,347 negatives; cataloged 28 digitized oral histories for the website; digitized and cataloged on demand 508 folders of textual documents for researchers; and digitized, cataloged, and integrated 974 pages of declassified documents into existing digital collections. An online media gallery entitled, "Gifts from the People," was completed by the digital archives staff. In addition, to the above the Digital Archives staff wrote blog posts for Archivally Speaking, a feature on the Library's website: "'The business of Every Citizen: President John F. Kennedy Stumps for Democratic Candidates in 1962," February 24, 2016; "Setting the stage: Communications Staff Prepare for Presidential Travel," August 4, 2016; "Authority Catalogers-in-Training at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library," August 19, 2016; and "Digitization of Photographs from President John F. Kennedy's Trip to Germany," December 17, 2016. Archives Internship Program The Archives Internship Program is a stipend-based program in which Archives staff members provide one-on-one training/supervision to graduate students in all areas of archival practice. The work described in the above section was ably assisted by the Foundation support of 14 student interns from Simmons College, Northeastern University, and the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Audiovisual Processing interns assisted in integrating several hundred sound recordings into 15 different collections of personal papers; inventorying more than 2,000 magnetic sound and moving image items in the Edward M. Kennedy Senate Files; and processing the Carl Gray Collection. Oral History interns assisted in transcribing and publishing to the website 215 oral history interviews comprising 8,872 pages. Digitization interns assisted in digitizing and cataloging the White House Photographs and oral history interviews. Textual and Audiovisual Reference interns assisted in responding to the year's 5,680 research requests in AV Reference, this work included the digitization of photographs and digitization/editing of sound recordings and moving images. An intern also contributed a blog to Archivally Speaking: "Lucky Discovery in the Audiovisual Archives," November 19, 2016. Fellowship and Grant Opportunities The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation offers competitive research fellowships and grants every year to scholars and students who wish to make use of the archival holdings (including audiovisual materials) of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. In 2016 the following named fellowships and Ernest Hemingway Research grants were awarded: Marjorie Kovler Research Fellowship: 2 fellowships totaling $2,500 Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. Research Fellowship: 3 fellowships totaling $5,000 Abba P. Schwartz Research Fellowship: 2 fellowships totaling $3,100 Theodore C. Sorensen Research Fellowship: 2 fellowships totaling $3,600 Ernest Hemingway Research Grants: 3 grants totaling $2,500 Library Naturalization Ceremonies President Kennedy thought deeply about what it means to be an American citizen. And he spoke often about it, especially after he was elected to the highest office in our land. If there is one phrase that captures the essence of his presidency and the meaning of citizenship as he saw it, it is the ringing phrase in his Inaugural Address, so my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country." In keeping with President Kennedy's sentiments, each year the Foundation in collaboration with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, hosts naturalization ceremonies at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Following the ceremony, the new citizens and their families are invited to join in a celebratory reception. In 2016, there were 6 naturalization ceremonies in which 1,060 people became new citizens of the United States. Centennial Commission In July 2016 legislation was passed to establish the John F. Kennedy Centennial Commission. The Commission will plan, develop, and carry out activities to honor President Kennedy on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2017. The Foundation, working with the Commission, will utilize the Centennial celebration to connect the world with the timeless values President Kennedy championed and their continued relevance today.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Communications Support - $897,441 Promotion of Landmark Hemingway Exhibit The Foundation developed a coordinated advertising, digital marketing, and PR campaign for the opening of the Ernest Hemingway: Between Two Wars exhibit, targeting tourists visiting Boston and local Boston museum goers in order to increase visitation for this landmark exhibit. The opening of the exhibit was covered extensively by the media: an article on the front page of the Metro section of the Boston Sunday Globe; the Associated Press wrote an in-depth feature that was put on the wire and picked up by more than 250 national and international news outlets, both in English and translated into Spanish; and WGBH Greater Boston produced a nationally syndicated story on the Hemingway exhibit featuring the museum's curator. Digital marketing efforts were focused both locally and nationally, with a wide variety of mechanisms, including: email blasts from the Foundation and the Library; GoodReads.com featured a month's worth of online advertisement on their site; website banners and online article advertisements appeared on Boston.com/BostonGlobe.com; and through targeted Facebook ads. Website and Social Media Our social media pages saw continued growth throughout the year. The JFK Library has nearly 100,000 followers on Facebook and nearly 50,000 on Twitter. The growth on Facebook and Twitter has allowed the Library to reach more than 35 million users in more than 1,500 posts. We have also seen significant growth in other online platforms including Instagram, YouTube, and Tumblr. We have more than 40,000 followers on all three platforms combined. On YouTube, we had almost 10 million views of video from the JFK archives and live events. Our social media footprint has allowed us to reach audiences outside of our normal demographic, especially younger audiences who did not grow up knowing John F. Kennedy. Centennial Branding The Foundation developed a signature branding for the John F. Kennedy Centennial Celebration in 2017. The branding will anchor the Library and Foundations efforts to draw attention to President Kennedy during this milestone anniversary and engage new audiences with his life and legacy. Form 990, Part III, Line 4c Education Programs - $577,863 The Education Departments work is mission-driven and audience-centered. The purpose of this work is to: help people understand the history of the Kennedy era; promote debate and discussion of issues at the heart of contemporary democracy that relate to JFKs legacy; foster engagement with the arts; and inspire new generations to be informed citizens and to participate in public service. During 2016, the Foundation's support for education and public program initiatives enabled the department to reach diverse audiences both onsite and at a distance through the worldwide web and other media. Engaging Young Audiences Celebrate! Series The 13th annual Celebrate! <ExplanationTxt>Following a one-year hiatus due to a temporary closure for museum renovations, this annual event for budding presidential historians and their families featured themed musical performances, first-person interpreters of Presidents Lincoln and Adams, and First Lady Abigail Adams, as well as hands-on gallery programs and craft activities leading to intergenerational engagement, fun, and learning. More than 1,440 people participated and 98% of respondents to a NARA (National Archives and Records Administration) survey indicated that they would recommend the program to others. Docent Program The members of the Librarys docent program served as ambassadors for the Library in engaging audiences from around the country and the world with the presidents life story and legacy. Docent programs, including the new gallery talk on Ernest Hemingway, served 6,795 visitors and students. History, Civic Education and Service Learning Activities Setting National Priorities: A Federal Budget Simulation Program offered for high school juniors and seniors. In this simulation, students role play as economic advisers to the president. Working in small groups with peers from schools across Massachusetts, they reviewed discretionary programs that need funding, and decided how much to invest in each. The program culminates with each small group sharing its plan with other groups in a plenary session. A record-breaking 898 students from 32 schools participated in 5 programs. A version of the program is available on the Librarys website for use by national educators. Stand Against Racism at the JFK Library Elementary students sang out for justice as they reenacted the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library on April 28, 2016. This special student program brought together 141 fourth-grade students from the Merrymount School in Quincy, MA and the Dever Elementary School in Dorchester, MA to meet one another and learn about civil rights history together. The event, was planned in conjunction with Stand Against Racism, a national effort sponsored by the YWCA. Student Leadership Conference On April 21, 2016, eighty-two high school students and fifteen staff members from New England educational enrichment programs attended the annual Student Leadership Conference at the Kennedy Library. The program included theater and public speaking workshops centered on the theme of resilient leadership. Brown University senior Manuel Contreras delivered a keynote address about how he co-founded 1vyG: The Inter-Ivy, First-Generation Students Network to advocate for better support and access to resources for students who are the first in their family to attend college. National Student/Parent Mock Election The Library served as the Massachusetts state headquarters for the 2016 National Student/Parent Mock Election. The Library partnered with the national campaign to help combat voter apathy amongst the country's youngest citizens and to introduce them to the importance of voting. The Library developed and distributed non-partisan teaching tools to help educators prepare their students to participate in the Mock Election Day. More than 33,000 students (K-12) from more than 160 schools across Massachusetts cast their ballots at each of their respective schools by Thursday, November 3, 2016. The votes were tabulated and then reported to officials at the Library. Debate Program 903 students participated in the Election-Year Debate programs in October. Students exchanged views on important issues in the 2016 presidential campaign in small discussion sections and then reconvened as a large group for a debate of the issues. Guided Museum Programs During the 2015-2016 school year more than 6,300 elementary, middle, and high school students participated in in-depth three-hour Museum programs and docent-facilitated school offerings such as: -Who Was John F. Kennedy? <ExplanationTxt>Awards Program - $565,223 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award recognizes a public official(s) at the federal, state, or local level whose actions demonstrate the qualities of politically courageous leadership in the spirit of Profiles in Courage, President Kennedy's 1957 Pulitzer prize-winning book, which recounts the stories of eight U.S. Senators who risked their careers by embracing unpopular positions for the greater good. The award has become the premiere award in the political arena. A distinguished bi-partisan committee named by the Foundation reviews all nominations, and selects the recipient(s) of the award. In order to exponentially increase public engagement with the Profile in Courage Award and the ideal it conveys, the Foundation's Communications and Awards Program staff worked closely with the digital firm, Precision Strategies, planning and executing strategies for the award nomination period, announcement, ceremony, and year-round awareness. These strategies included tactics executed via email, paid media and social media and resulted in: 4,400 nominations in 2016 more than quadruple the number of nominations in 2015; reached more than 112,000 people as part of our Facebook Livestream of the award ceremony; our Twitter efforts garnered over 164,000 impressions; our Snapchat filter received over 2,000 impressions; and over 1,200 people congratulated the 2016 awardee through a form available on the new microsite close to double the number of well-wishers in 2015. In 2016, the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award was awarded to Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy. Governor Malloy could have chosen the politically expedient course and remained silent on the highly charged, controversial issue of refugee resettlement and national security. Instead, amid security concerns following the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris and in a direct challenge to those calling for the United States to close the doors on Syrian refugees, Governor Malloy announced that Connecticut would continue to accept refugees from Syria and personally welcomed a family of Syrian refugees to New Haven after they had been turned away by another state. John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest The Profile in Courage Essay Contest, a companion program of the Profile in Courage Award, invites U.S. high school students to describe and analyze an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1956, the year Profiles in Courage was published. The essay contest meets curriculum requirements and Common Core standards in English and history, and annually drives a high level of engagement among several thousand high school students, hundreds of history and English teachers, and nearly 100 community volunteers who serve as readers for the contest. In 2016, 2,070 essays were submitted from students in all fifty states and Washington, DC, and from United States citizens in Canada, England, and South Korea. This represents an 8% increase over the 2015 submissions. The top ten essays were selected after three rounds of judging and the final selection of the first-place winner was made by the Profile in Courage Award Committee. Zhen Tu, a junior at the Eagan High School in Eagan Minnesota, wrote her award-winning essay on the political courage of former U.S. Senator Howard Baker of Tennessee. John F. Kennedy New Frontier Awards The John F. Kennedy New Frontier Awards were created in 2003 by the Foundation and the Institute of Politics at Harvard University to celebrate the nobility and importance of careers in public service by recognizing outstanding public leaders under the age of 40 who exemplify the spirit of President Kennedy. The New Frontier Awards, presented annually to an elected and a non-elected public servant, aim to engage younger audiences and to inspire public service and civic engagement among young Americans. The awardees in 2016 were Mayor Aja Brown of Compton, California and Max Kenner, the founder and executive director of the Bard Prison Initiative.</ExplanationTxt>
