IN OCTOBER 2016, LWV OF FLORIDA FILED AN EMERGENCY COMPLAINT AGAINST THE GOVERNOR AND SECRETARY OF STATE FOR REFUSING TO EXTEND VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINES IN THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICANE MATTHEW. IN A HUGE VICTORY FOR THE LEAGUE, THE JUDGE RULED IN FAVOR OF VOTERS, EXTENDING VOTER REGISTRATION FOR AN ADDITIONAL WEEK. THE LEAGUE INTERVENED IN MANY LEGAL BATTLES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, INCLUDING KOBACH V. EAC, WHERE THE LEAGUE ARGUED THAT THE DECISION OF THE STATES OF ARIZONA AND KANSAS TO REQUIRE PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP WHEN REGISTERING TO VOTE, DISENFRANCHISES VOTERS. LWVUS AND STATE LEAGUES OF ALABAMA, GEORGIA, AND KANSAS FILED SUIT IN LWV V. NEWBY, OPPOSING U.S. ELECTION ASSISTANCE COMMISSION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR BRIAN D. NEWBY'S ACTION TO ALLOW THREE STATES TO REQUIRE DOCUMENTARY PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP ON THE FEDERAL VOTER REGISTRATION FORM. OUR POST-ELECTION PETITION TO "STOP VOTER SUPPRESSION" RECEIVED OVER 10,000 SIGNATURES IN THE FIRST 2 WEEKS. WE ASKED MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS TO STAND WITH THE LEAGUE TO ENSURE THAT ELECTIONS ARE ALWAYS FREE, FAIR AND ACCESSIBLE, AND TO WORK WITH THE LEAGUE TO STOP VOTER SUPPRESSION TACTICS THAT THREATEN OUR DEMOCRACY AND THE RIGHT TO VOTE. WHEN THE NEW ADMINISTRATION CONSTRUCTED AN ELECTION INTEGRITY COMMISSION IN 2017, THE LEAGUE WAS AMONG THE FIRST VOTING RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS TO CONDEMN THIS COMMISSION AS AN UNNECESSARY DISTRACTION FROM THE REAL WORK TO PROTECT AGAINST FOREIGN HACKING AND INTERFERENCE IN OUR ELECTORAL PROCESSAS WELL AS PART OF A WIDER EFFORT TO SUPPRESS THE VOTE, KEEP CERTAIN POLITICIANS IN POWER, AND UNDERMINED OUR ELECTIONS BY SPREADING FALSEHOODS. CONTINUING OUR DEEP COMMITMENT TO REDISTRICTING REFORM, THE LEAGUE JOINED AN AMICUS BRIEF IN THE CASE OF BETHUNE-HILL V. VIRGINIA STATE BOARD OF ELECTIONS. THE CASE ARGUES THAT THE VIRGINIA LEGISLATURE'S REDISTRICTING MAP WAS INTENTIONALLY GERRYMANDERED ON THE BASIS OF RACE. THE LEAGUE IS DEEPLY COMMITTED TO REFORMING OUR NATION'S CAMPAIGN FINANCE SYSTEM TO ENSURE THE PUBLIC'S RIGHT TO KNOW, COMBAT CORRUPTION AND UNDUE INFLUENCE, ENABLE CANDIDATES TO COMPETE MORE EQUITABLY FOR PUBLIC OFFICE AND ALLOW MAXIMUM CITIZEN PARTICIPATION IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS. IN FEBRUARY 2017, WE JOINED A LETTER OPPOSING LEGISLATION THAT WOULD TERMINATE THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN FUND AND THE ELECTION ASSISTANCE COMMISSION. IN MARCH 2017 WE SPOKE OUT AGAINST A POLITICAL GROUP'S OFFER TO MAKE LARGE CONTRIBUTIONS TO MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WHO VOTED AGAINST THE LEADERSHIP'S HEALTH CARE LEGISLATION AS DEEPLY CORRUPT. SINCE THE 1960S, WE HAVE BEEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF EFFORTS TO PROTECT AIR, LAND AND WATER RESOURCES. IN THIS VEIN, LWVUS AND LWV OF OREGON FILED TWO AMICUS BRIEFS IN JULIANA ET AL V. UNITED STATES, IN SUPPORT OF THE 21-YOUNG PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE UNITED STATES WHO HAVE FILED A LANDMARK CONSTITUTIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE LAWSUIT AGAINST THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. THE LEAGUE HAS BEEN A LONGTIME PROPONENT OF AFFORDABLE QUALITY HEALTH CARE FOR ALL AMERICANS. WHEN CONGRESS OR THE ADMINISTRATION ATTEMPTED TO ROLL BACK COVERAGE, THE LEAGUE WAS OUTSPOKEN IN OUR COMMITMENT TO IMPROVING THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT AND OPPOSE ANY LEGISLATION THAT WOULD TAKE AWAY SERVICES OR INCREASE COSTS OF HEALTH CARE.
