| Desc | Campaigns: Through planning and carrying out campaign activity to shedding light on and advocating for change in conditions faced by low-wage workers in Baltimore and metropolitan area counties, low-wage youth and workers received practicum training in organization, advocacy, public speaking, and building alliances with community allies. Campaigns around working conditions have expanded to address broader fair development issues: environmental issues created for low-income communities as a result of special rights granted to large firms, lack of access to resources and local government servies for homeless residents and others, the challenge of developing non-speculative housing in low-income communities, inadequacy of health care resources. Intense community canvasing, focus groups, and discussion around isses affecting communities have spurred low-wage workers to break neighborhood isolation and connect with city-wide, state and regional activity. Addressing homelessness, affordable housing, environmental, health, and workplace isses has raised levels of engagement for workers in Baltimore and surrounding jurisdictions. | Desc | Governance & Decision-making: Participation in the organizations Leadership Council, through which low-wage workers took direct responsibility for the decision-making of the organization in 2014, adopting/adjusting policies and procedures, and approving annual plans and budgets has increased the skills and competencies of this, the Board of Directors of the organization. This year the Leadership Council adjusted, adopted, and up-dated a Human Resources Manual and increased its oversight activities. Low-wage workers make up 75% of the 16-member body. Election of members to three-year staggered terms is held yearly, with voting restricted to United Workers members. The Leadership Council oversees the staff collective and must approve any course corrections in the strategic plan, all staffing decisions, and financial issues beyond thosed detailed in the budget. The body meets quarterly to review staff reports, monitor adherence to the mission, plan, and budget. Our education and leadership development includes introductory discussions/seminars, beginning-level coursework through university-level study, intertwined with community outreach and research addressing community issues and targeted to help in poor working-class communities. While reflecting on the conditions of poverty, members experience working together to address the issues they identify and move from participation in educational opportunities to being co-facilitators. Producing media documentation of their experiences of poverty and rights violations; public community-building opportunities to see/hear and discuss their work experience; Know Your Rights, Health Care and Housing Leadership Schools, strategic dialogues with the broader community, and other family and social activities are all spaces for reflection and scholarship, including study of the economic crisis and its effects on Baltimore.
