DescriptionA significant amount of our resources are dedicated to our mission to ensure that the basic needs of our community senior citizens are provided for and to assist them in living healthy lives. The majority of senior citizens who live in our urban catchment area live in poverty and live alone. We strive to abate the negative impact of their poverty and provide community support networks for them. The organization services approx 500 senior citizens a day at the six senior centers it operates. In addition While each of our centers has a distinct personality, all share a common mission: they seek to enhance the lives of senior citizens, aged 60 and over, through the provision of social services and advocacy and endeavors to facilitate social interaction and companionship through the provision of recreational, cultural, and educational activities. More specifically the Centers offer the following:Nutritional Services: Breakfast and lunch meals are served from Monday through Friday to seniors who attend the centers. For homebound senior citizens who are unable to cook and prepare their own meals and who do not receive home care services in excess of 19 hours per week, the center delivers daily lunch meals Monday through Sunday. Health Services: Screenings are provided on a regular basis by a physician. In addition, the centers host lectures and discussions on a variety of health-related topics such as Alzheimer's, high blood pressure, pain management, eye care, hearing, nutrition, etc. Blood pressure, blood sugar level, vision, and other general screenings are conducted monthly. Several centers offer walking clubs as a fun way to get regular exercise. Classes are available to educate seniors on the prevention of falls and fractures as well as to alleviate back and neck pain. DescriptionEDUCATION One of the RBSCC's original service components, the Youth and Education Department is one of our longest standing and most comprehensive. This department has as its main objective the improvement of community youth and adults' and their families lives through educational, employment, recreational, and self-improvement activities. The component services on average 1700 people in a single day. Aimed at promoting the constructive use of young people's free time as well as their positive personal and academic growth are the foundation of our services. Our youth and educational services are housed at the 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art Ridgewood Bushwick Youth Center which was built by the organization and represents over 10 years of planning and development. The Bushwick community was one of the few neighborhoods in New York City that did not have a youth center, YMCA, or other facility for youth to use after school or on weekends. The Youth Center includes a full sized gymnasium with a regulation sized basketball court, a fitness room, a dance room, a technology room and an arts and crafts studio. Other features include seven classrooms that host a variety of educational programming for community youth and adults and a multipurpose room that is complete with a pool table, television and other games for youth. The Center is open seven days a week and services Programs include the following:21st Century Community Learning Center Program: This program provides a wide range of after school programming and support services to community youth in grades 6th to 12th and their families. Services include ESL tutoring, SAT preparation, regents preparation, AP credit, City Wide math exam preparation, City Wide reading exam preparation, homework assistance, subject specific tutoring, youth development activities, including athletics, martial arts and creative arts programming. Through the provision of these services, Ridgewood Bushwick seeks to support the planning, implementation and expansion of academic enrichment opportunities of our youth. Council on the Arts: This program allows us to introduce the young people of Bushwick to the arts for the opportunity of "hands-on" experience in the fields of dance, theater, art, and chorus. Classes and workshops are held at the Youth Center and at our Beacon Program at I.S. 296. Field trips are sponsored to expose youth to art institutions.In-School Youth Educational and Employment Program (YEEP) In-School Youth Educational and Employment Program (YEEP): The In-School YEEP Program is designed to provide services for high school juniors and seniors by assisting them in defining and clarifying their educational and career goals. This program works to improve attitudes, expand career awareness, develop foundation skills, prevent school dropout and provide participants with the skills needed for long-term positive impact in their future learning and employment goals. This is achieved through the provision of services such as Tutoring, Individual/Group Counseling, Support Services, Life Skills Workshops, Higher Education and Career Exploration, SAT Prep., Regents Prep., Internships, Community Service and Employment Opportunities, Incentives and Guaranteed Summer Employment through our Summer Youth Employment Program. My Voice Theatre: Founded in 1996, My Voice Theatre is designed as an after-school theater company which allows participants to work through and express their feelings about some hard-hitting life issues. The overall goal is to break the codes of silence that too often surround such issues within our community and culture. The company, which consists of young people between the ages of 12 and 19, strives to effect positive change in the lives of its members as well as in the lives of others through its theatrical performances. Company participants learn to express their thoughts and ideas in verbal and written form and present monologues and scenes. OST/Tutoring & Homework Assistance Program (THAP): THAP offers tutorial and remedial assistance to young people attending elementary school. This program seeks to nurture children in a safe environment while motivating and encouraging them to improve their school performances in basic subject areas. Certified Department of Education teachers provide one on one and group assistance in Reading and Math, and homework assistance in all subjects. THAP provides supervised escort service from P.S. 86 and P.S. 116. During the summer months, THAP operates as a summer day camp, providing educational, recreational and cultural enrichment.Project Ex.I.T.O.: This program provides primary substance abuse prevention education and support to youth between the ages of 6 and 21 and their families. Endeavoring to provide the necessary tools for healthy and positive functioning, our trained counselors perform assessments, conduct individual and group counseling, provide support to families, and make referrals to other services. Project Ex.I.T.O. additionally addresses truancy and other school attendance problems, academic performance problems, family and/or personal difficulties, and other maladaptive behaviors. Activities and information which facilitate and reinforce self-esteem, coping skills, decision-making skills, responsibility, and self-discipline are provided. Summer Youth Employment Program: This program provides approximately 600 community youth with the opportunity for structured and supervised work experience while earning a paycheck. During the summer, youth between the ages of 14 and 21 may participate. On-the-job learning is supplemented with counseling, work readiness, higher education, health education, career exploration and labor market orientation. In addition, educational and recreational services are available to program participants during non-work hours.Description

DescriptionThe Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council, Inc. (RBSCC) has played an integral role in the rebuilding of Bushwick from the late 1970s, when a decade of civic disinvestment resulted in uncontrollable fires and looting during the city-wide blackout in July 1977. With whole blocks destroyed, and the loss of a third of habitable units and half of the neighborhood's retail units destroyed, housing and retail development was desperately needed in Bushwick. RBSCC first became involved in housing development as a Community Property Management Program partner with the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development in the 1980s. Since that early entry into housing preservation and management, RBSCC has grown into the largest not-for-profit developer of affordable housing in Bushwick and possibly in all of Brooklyn. Over the past 20 years, we have developed over 1400 units of affordable housing using various local, state and federal financing products available including Low Income Housing Tax Credits, New York State tax-exempt Bond Financing, New York City PLP loans, Federal HUD 202 construction grants, and the New York State Housing Trust Fund, and have participated in several rounds of the New York City Neighborhood Redevelopment Program, Third Party Transfer Program, Tenant Interim Lease Program, and Neighborhood Homes Program. We are also partners with Restored Homes to rehabilitate 1-4 family homes for affordable home ownership, and have sponsored and marketed over 1200 units to first time homebuyers through the New York City Housing Partnership. Our projects range from gut renovations of 1-6 family homes throughout Bushwick to multi-family new construction projects. Over 500 units in seven separate buildings are dedicated to shelter fixed and low income seniors, each of which provide a live-in superintendent, on-site management and social services and round the clock security. The crowning glory of our portfolio is the Rheingold Brewery site, located on the formerly abandoned and contaminated Rheingold Brewery. RBSCC is one of the only organizations to successfully and safely redevelop contaminated Brownfield for community use. When completed later this year, there will be a total of over 500 affordable homeownership and rentals units in addition to community facility and retail opportunities. Recognized throughout the city for excellence in design, the Rheingold Brewery redevelopment also received the Northeast Region Phoenix Award for Excellence in Brownfield Redevelopment from the United States Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, RBSCC received the 2009 Big Apple Brownfield Award for Community Outreach based on the innovative charette and community input process that lead to the extensive development. One of the RBSCCs original service components, the Housing Department, has earned a reputation in Bushwick for its leadership role in community development and neighborhood improvement. RBSCCs commitment to ensuring safe, decent and reasonably priced housing is accomplished through the provision of the following services:Predatory Lending Program: The Predatory Lending Program is an initiative funded by NYC HPD with the goal of confronting the growing epidemic of deceitful lending practices in poor neighborhoods such as Bushwick. Predatory lending often results in owners paying high interest rates on mortgages that may cause to foreclosures and eventual loss of property. Clients may be referred for legal intervention, responsible loan refinancing programs, and advice on real estate tax payment programs. Other services provided to homeowners include surveys of privately owned, distressed buildings in the Bushwick area; information on City programs to dismiss building violations, information about low interest loans to provide building upgrades; and other technical assistance to owners to improve skills and to maintain and upgrade their properties.Anti-Harassment Program: As part of a grant from the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, the RBSCC launched the North Brooklyn Tenants Assistance program. This anti-harassment program reaches out to Williamsburg tenants threatened with displacement due to the changing housing market. Through education and referrals to other social service agencies, we work to ensure affordable housing and safe living conditions for thousands of residents. Where necessary, our program provides clients free legal advice through our legal assistance program and strive to place tenants in affordable housing within the neighborhood.Home Ownership Counseling: The foreclosure prevention and education program, initiated in 2005, assists low to moderate income homeowners with preserving their homeownership when faced with economic difficulties created by predatory sub-prime lending. The deepening sub-prime mortgage crisis in North Brooklyn is forcing many borrowers to face mortgage default. As a result, lenders are initiating foreclosure proceedings in record numbers. Under these daunting circumstances, many homeowners do not know where to turn. The RBSCC provides free counseling to assist homeowners in resolving their mortgage-related situations. We assist homeowners who are facing foreclosure, delinquent or near-delinquent mortgage payments and victims of deed theft scams or predatory lenders.RESTORE Program: The RESTORE Program provides grants of up to $5,000 to low income homeowners, aged 60 and over to correct substandard housing conditions in emergency situations that pose a threat to the homeowners life, safety, or health. Typical repairs include: furnace, roof, electrical, water problems, deteriorated stairs, porches, and foundation.Weatherization Referral and Packaging Program (WRAP): Through the NYC Department for the Aging, WRAP offers low-income elderly homeowners FREE home energy related services that can lower their energy bills and increase the comfort of their homes. Persons eligible will also be assisted in accessing needed social and support services.Description
