DescriptionSEE SCHEDULE OJumpstart Session: Jumpstart's mission comes to life in the Jumpstart session. Each team of approximately five to eight Corps members conducts sessions twice a week, for two hours or more per session, following the Jumpstart curriculum closely with their partner children to develop vocabulary, reading comprehension, book knowledge, initiative, social skills and a love of learning. Each week, the two-day session is based on a different, developmentally appropriate children's book. All session elements draw from this book to continually reinforce the goals of the curriculum and each child's learning experience. During the session, Corps members work from Jumpstart's curriculum, which focuses on four key principles: - utilizing developmentally appropriate practices; - engaging children in active learning; - striking a balance of adult-initiated and child-initiated learning; - and supporting children's emergent reading and writing. A veteran Corps member, known as a Team Leader, facilitates planning and implementation for each session. The session, itself, incorporates elements where adults engage children in meaningful conversations that expand the child's range of expression and build invaluable social skills needed to succeed not only in school but throughout a child's life. One-to-One Reading - Corps members read to their partner children individually using the Dialogic Reading method, which allows the child to explore the book that he/she has chosen. This method makes the child an active participant in the reading experience because the Corps member engages the child in a conversation about the book rather than simply reading the book word-for-word.Circle Time - This large-group learning time offers children and Corps members a chance to build a sense of community through active learning experiences that are rich in language, literacy and social interactions. Children and Corps members come together to sing, do finger-plays, play simple movement games, review the daily routine and talk about what will happen that day.Choice Time/Small Group Activity - Children have the opportunity to make choices about what materials they will play with, where they will play, who they will play with and what they will do in the classroom. At the beginning of Choice Time, planning time is used for children to map out what they will do during this session element. Corps members support children as they carry out their initial plans, make additional plans and then review their experiences during recall. During Choice Time, children can also choose to participate in a Small Group Activity, which gives children the chance to experiment with materials and solve problems in an activity that has been chosen and designed to support the session focus for each session plan.In addition, Corps members serve additional hours in what we call classroom assistance time throughout the school year. Corps members spend two to four hours per week in the preschool classroom of Jumpstart children during the regular school day. This time is used to observe children and support them, as well as provide overall classroom assistance to the teacher.Corps Member Training and Support: Jumpstart makes certain that college student and community volunteers receive the tools and training they need to ensure their success. Corps members receive up to 60 hours of training both before and during their service and receive support from a three-tier system of staff support on the local, regional and national levels. In this way, the Corps members are well prepared to fight America's educational crisis head on.Collaborative Model: By connecting college students, community volunteers, preschool programs and families in each neighborhood it serves, Jumpstart is truly a collaborative and community-based solution to the school readiness crisis in America. This creates a model of service and educational support that builds on existing resources in a community with Jumpstart's educational expertise and support network,Description

IdentifierProcedure for Monitoring Grants in the U.S.:Identifier
Return ReferencePart I, Line 2:ReturnReference
ExplanationSchedule I, Part I, Line 2: Jumpstart awards grants to universities to perform programming services. These universities are identified as possible grantees based upon a number of factors including capacity of performing services and accounting for expenditures. Once identified, universities are approached by Jumpstart and preliminary discussions occur to determine proper fit and compliance with selection factors. Prior to awarding a grant, preliminary budgets are created, reviewed, and revised. When the grant is awarded, a notice is sent to the university followed by a detailed Cooperative Agreement (contract). The Agreement identifies the purpose of the grant, lists the programmatic and fiscal responsibilities of each party, and corrective actions. The Agreement is signed before any money is given to the university. Afterwards, Jumpstart provides programmatic and fiscal training sessions to university personnel. In most cases, monthly invoices from the university is submitted to Jumpstart. The invoices are in such detail as to provide compliance with Americorps reporting. Depending upon circumstances, the universities provide Jumpstart copies of all source documentation on a monthly basis while at other times, source documentation is requested by Jumpstart on a random basis. The source documentation is reviewed by Jumpstart's fiscal department for appropriateness and compliance. This constant monitoring is completed with a thorough review of the universities final invoice, which is paid only after all fiscal and programmatic questions have been answered satisfactorily. Additionally, at different times during the year, Jumpstart is chosen by various state Americorps commission auditors to inspect Jumpstart and the universities' records to obtain sufficient proof that the money is being spent in accordance with the purpose and rules of the grant.Explanation
