DescriptionResidency ProgramThe core of the New Leaders aspiring principal program is a year-long, full-time, paid residency in an urban public school where the program participant works alongside a mentor principal. Simultaneously, program participants receive on-going training from New Leaders through a summer institute and regular seminars and training sessions throughout the school year. Program participants undergo an intensive recruitment and admissions process in order to be accepted. The ultimate goal of the Residency is to prepare program participants to become highly-effective principals or assistant principals in urban public schools that promote high expectations for and deliver high levels of student achievement and that equip every student with the academic and personal skills needed to graduate from high school ready for success in college, careers, and citizenship. Through this program, New Leaders delivered rigorous curriculum, training, and support experiences to 90 program participants in twelve program cities in order to give the participants the skills necessary to become outstanding urban public school leaders.Description

DescriptionEPIC ProgramEPIC, the Effective Practice Incentive Community, provides New Leaders and its partners the opportunity to learn from educators driving gains in high-need urban schools. The program identifies schools whose students are making significant achievement gains and financially rewards those schools leaders and educators in exchange for sharing the effective practices that have contributed to the gains. After distributing financial awards to eligible educators in a high-gain school, EPIC works to identify the effective practices that led to student achievement gains and then develops a case study or profile of a schools practice. This content is shared with a large community of educators online via the EPIC Knowledge System. In FY10, EPIC identified 63 schools across its four partnership programs as high-gain schools, and proffered financial awards to nearly 170 school leaders and over 1,500 teachers and instructional staff in the District of Columbia Public Schools, the Memphis City Schools, the National Charter School Consortium, and the Denver Public Schools.Description

DescriptionSchool Support ProgramAs the post-Residency component of its aspiring principal program, New Leaders provided coaching and school support services to a community of 445 principals and assistant principals in 391 schools serving approximately 200,000 students. The support provided was intended to guide the continued development of key personal leadership qualities and the implementation of school-wide practices that will ultimately lead to dramatic student achievement gains. Through city program offices, New Leaders principals and assistant principals had access to ongoing professional development workshops, consultations with expert staff, opportunities to participate in small-group learning and leadership development experiences, and invitations to networking and social events. They also have access to high-quality, nationally-provided resources including the Urban Excellence Framework Field Guide; UEF-aligned tools, artifacts, and resources; school-wide diagnostic tools and action planning frameworks; online access to key Foundations curriculum and course materials; the EPIC Knowledge System; and invitations to periodic national professional development events.Description

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11The federal form 990 (along with audited financial statements) is reviewed and approved by all voting members of the organization's governing body. Upon completion of the annual audit, drafts of the 990 and audit financial statements are presented to the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors in electronic and paper copy for preliminary review and approval. Once preliminary approval is granted, the draft 990 and audited financial statements are presented in electronic form to the full Board of Directors for review and approval. The full Board of Directors will vote yes or no via email to accept the draft 990 and draft audited financial statements. This vote is recorded in meeting minutes of the Board of Directors. The draft 990 and audited financial statements are also presented in electronic form to the Officers of the organization for review and approval. Once these approvals have been received whether in writing, via e-mail, or recorded in Board meeting minutes, the 990 will be filed with federal and state governments along with copies of the final, bound audited financial statements.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cNew Leaders for New Schools has a written conflict of interest policy and procedures published in the Employee Handbook, Fiscal Policies and Procedures Manual, on the NLNS Website, and Board orientation materials. Board Members, Officers, and Management Employees are given a copy of the conflict of interest policy and procedures are required to sign a document certifying they have read and understand the conflict of interest procedures. The Board currently mandates that all members of management and the governing body annually sign a conflict of interest questionnaire and disclose potential or actual conflicts that may exist. The signed conflict of interest policy documents are submitted to the governance committee. These statements are reviewed for potential or actual conflicts. If a potential or actual conflict of interest exists, the committee will notify members of management about such conflict and investigate the conflict. If management establishes that an actual conflict exists, the member of management will be notified immediately and will not be allowed to vote or be a part of any decisions about any such transactions that have to do with the conflict until such time there is no longer a conflict.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15The organization uses a detailed job ladder with position levels, salary ranges, and job requirements to pay all employees including the CEO, Officers, top Management officials, and other key employees. The compensation of the CEO is approved by the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors.
