| Description | Metabolic Effects of Newer Antipsychotics in Older PatientS:Drs. Robert Henry and Sunder Mudaliar are involved in testing a new drug called Pasireotide. This novel drug is being developed to treat Cushing's disease which affects about 15 patients per million per year and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Currently the treatment of choice for Cushing's disease is surgery or injectable octreotide. When patients fail these treatments, radiation is used, but is not always helpful. Pasireotide is thought of as a potential excellent second line treatment for Cushing's disease. However, in some patients, Pasireotide causes hyperglycemia and overt diabetes. This Veterans Medical Research Foundation (vmrf) study has been done to shed light on the mechanism by which Pasireotide increases blood sugar levels. | Description |

| Description | Dilip Jeste, MD EVALUATED FOUR commonly used medications for treating psychosis in older patients to determine the impact of side effects on everyday functioning and quality of life. This large study is the first one of its kind in older people, supported by the National Institutes of Health. Psychosis is a serious mental illness in older people. The medications used to treat it are somewhat helpful, but unfortunately, they can cause obesity, diabetes, stroke, and even death. This research, conducted under the auspices of VMRF, will help decide which particular medications are useful or harmful for specific groups of patients, and will thus have a major public health significance for treating the rapidly growing numbers of older people in the community. | Description |
