| Description | EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMINGIn 2010, the Education Department brought to Maine several preeminent speakers from the world of art. Established several years ago, The Farnsworth Forum is an annual lecture series that arranges for America's leading public intellectuals to speak in Rockland. In the summer, the Director of the Metropolitan Opera Peter Gelb spoke on the current state of opera in New York and around the globe. In the fall, art historian and author of the major publication, "American Encounters: Art, History, and Cultural Identity" Angela Miller gave her view of the future of American and global art.As well as conducting the always-popular Achieving American Art in the spring, the Education Department organized two, three-part lecture series in the fall. "American Picturesque" focused on our country's landscape culture in the mid-nineteenth century and drew a large audience in the Farnsworth auditorium. "On Beauty & Beyond" examined the concept of beauty as represented in world art and was conducted in The Strand Theatre.The Education Department expanded its offering for youth and adults throughout 2010. The variety of art-making classes can be seen in the following list of selections: linoleum block printing, mixed media portraiture, gouache painting, figure drawing, encaustic workshop, and Japanese style printmaking.The Education Department continued and strengthened various and sundry partnerships, including those with The Strand Theatre, Camden Conference, Peche Kucha, Maine Media Workshops and the surrounding public school districts. The major partnership established in 2010 was the strategic alliance with Lincoln Center Institute, New York. Lincoln Center Institute is the education arm of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Inc., the best-known and largest cultural institution in the world. Going forward, for one week in July, the Farnsworth will team up with Lincoln Center Institute to offer teachers form around the country a fully accredited workshop in aesthetic education.Julia's Gallery for Young Artists broke new artistic ground with the production of "The Roaring 20s." Julia's Gallery middle and high school students wrote, created the sets, handled the lighting and filming, and acted in a music video on the 1920s. The entire video was shot on a HD i-Phone and presented before over 300 people in The Strand Theatre in November. | Description |

AS A WHOLE, THE COLLECTION PRESENTS A SURVEY OF MAINE'S ROLE IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN ART FROM THE LATE 18TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT. THE MUSEUM CONTINUES TO ACTIVELY COLLECT AMERICAN ART THROUGH PURCHASE AND GIFTS. ALL WORKS IN THE PERMANENT COLLECTION ARE ASSIGNED A UNIQUE "ACCESSION" NUMBER AND PLACED IN SECURE STOAGE WHEN NOT ON EXHIBIT AT THE MUSEUM OR ON LAON TO OTHER MUSEUMS. THE MUSEUM ONLY LENDS TO GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS THAT MEET PRESCRIBED SECURITY AND CLIMATE STANDARDS AND PROVIDE ALL RISK INSURANCE CONVERAGE. RECORDS, INCLUDING OBJECT, ARTIST AND DONOR FILES, ARE MAINTAINED FOR EACH WORK OF ART. THE COLLECTION IS SPOT INVENTORIED ANNUALLY BY STAFF AND QUALIFIED CONSERVATORS ASSIST AS NECESSARY. THE MUSEUM MAINTAINS A BLANKET INSURANCE POLICY OF $60 MILLION FOR THE COLLECTION AND WORK ON LOAN.
