Community InformationTexas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children's (TSRHC) history and mission is to serve all patients whose care is within our scope of services, specifically relating to TSRHC's specialization in pediatric orthopaedics and learning disorders, at no charge. Because of the nature of these benefits, the hospital does not distinguish between charity care and community benefits. TSRHC does not have bad debt expense or medicare revenues and expenses as traditionally defined. Therefore, all of the expenses for medical care provided by TSRHC are for the community benefit. Because we provide care without expectation for reimbursement, TSRHC is exempt from the requirement to prepare and file a community benefit report. At Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC), our commitment to helping children lead happy and healthy lives extends beyond our patient treatment in our specialty areas. TSRHC is committed to caring for the WHOLE CHILD, both physically and emotionally. TSRHC physicians treat thousands of patients regardless of the family's ability to pay. TSRHC is one of the nation's leading pediatric centers for the treatment of orthopaedic conditions, certain related neurological disorders, such as spina bifida, and learning disorders, such as dyslexia. Our surgeons and medical staff focus on the treatment and management of children in these five Centers for Excellence: - Scoliosis & Spine - Clubfoot & Foot Disorders - Hip Disorders - Limb Length Discrepancies - Hand Differences TSRHCs patient service in 2010 included: - 39,625 outpatient visits - 2,146 surgeries were performed - More than 200,000 patients treated since the hospital's inception Since 1921, TSRHC has been serving the community not only by treating pediatric orthopaedic conditions mentioned above, but also through extended community outreach in areas such as, - Education - Research - Community Building Activities - Community Outreach - Therapeutic Recreation - Dyslexia In addition, the hospital's continued service to the global pediatric community is enhanced by the fact that the physicians at TSRHC wrote the book on the treatment of orthopaedic conditions affecting children. Now in its fourth edition, the textbook, Tachdjian's Pediatric Orthopaedics: From Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children is the standard reference guide for orthopaedic surgeons around the world. EDUCATION: For more than 30 years, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) has provided promising orthopaedic fellows with an extraordinary educational experience in the field of pediatric orthopaedic surgery and spine deformity, in association with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. There are more than 120 former fellows who have benefited from this program and hold prestigious medical positions in the U.S. and around the world. Participants in a TSRHC Fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis receive in-depth training in all aspects of reconstructive pediatric orthopaedics, trauma and infections. Each year a group of three to five physicians, who qualify for a highly coveted spot in the 12-month program, work alongside pediatric orthopaedists for a one- to two-month period before rotating to another physician, giving each fellow a firsthand, in-depth and invaluable learning experience with some of the world's most respected pediatric orthopaedists. In addition, fellows receive firsthand training from the hospital's clinical staff, a team trained to address the most complex treatment regimens. When fellows leave the program they remain connected to TSRHC through correspondence, educational conferences and various medical association gatherings. Fellows share the knowledge and experience gained during their fellowship, serving as TSRHC ambassadors for the care of children within their respective medical institutions and communities. RESEARCH: Since opening its door in 1921, TSRHC has strived to discover new and better ways to care for children affected with pediatric orthopaedic conditions and certain related neurological disorders. Our dedicated research center, the Sarah M. and Charles E. Seay Center for Musculoskeletal Research, consists of five centers for excellence supported by research divisions and core facilities. Each Center for Excellence integrates the services and knowledge of investigators from various educational backgrounds, such as orthopaedic surgery, biomechanical engineering, genetics, statistics, histology, and motion analysis. Through the years, TSRHC researchers and physicians have generated more than 20 patents and important discoveries which have helped children worldwide and will allow the medical community to form new hypotheses to explain what causes certain conditions while providing tools for future research. A few major findings and patents include: 1. Major Findings The first gene discovered to be associated with idiopathic scoliosis, a progressive condition that causes the spine to curve, identified at TSRHC in 2007. The study is outlined in the May 2007 issue of the American Jouranl of Human Genetics. - Two new genetic markers that are involved in nuerological development associated with idiopathic scoliosis, identified at TSRHC in 2011 as a follow-up to the 2007 study. The study is outlined in April 1, 2011, issue of the journal Human Molecular Genetics. - The TSRH SILO 5.5 Spinal System, developed in 2005. A modified design of the TSRH Spinal System developed in the 1980s, it allows for shorter surgery and uses lower profile implants for patients comfort. - The TRUE/LOK External Fixation System developed in 1998. - The TSRH Spinal System developed in the 1980s. 2. Patents - February 2010 CHD7 Gene Polymorphisms are associated with susceptibility to Idiopathic Scoliosis - November 2003 Genetic Marker for Autoimmune Disorder - November 2002 Golf Prosthesis - July 1999 External Fixation Device and Method - April 1995 Positional Spinal Fixation Device - September 1993 Spinal HookCommunityInformation
Community Building ActivitiesCommunity Outreach: Each year, TSRHC hosts free events in cooperation with leading community organizations intended to educate about topics considered important to the community's safety and vitality. Events focus on awareness of child safety, Texas agriculture and volunteer service. The longstanding collaboration between TSRHC and various community organizations that promote educational and volunteer efforts are an important part of the hospital's commitment to give back to the community. Three examples include: 1. Rotary Club of Dallas Bike Rodeo and Child Safety Day In 2010, TSRHC hosted the ninth annual Bike Rodeo and Child Safety Day event in the Dallas area in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Dallas, Texas Office for Prevention of Developmental Disabilities, Dallas Police Department, Dallas Fire Department, North Texas Poison Center, Texas Rangers law enforcement officials and additional community organizations. Child Safety Day is designed to teach children about traffic safety and general safety, including poison control and fire and water safety. Bike Rodeo provides a safe environment for children to practice bicycle safety skills by riding on a course designed to simulate actual road conditions. Children will have their bikes inspected and receive a free bike helmet with the chance to win a new bicycle. 2. Farm and Ranch Day The community is invited to celebrate Texas agriculture at TSRHC's Farm and Ranch Day event. In cooperation with the Dallas Park and Recreation Department, Southwest Dairy Museum, Dallas Police Department/Dallas County Sheriff's Posse, Reverchon Park Recreation Center, Dallas Charity Horse Shows, Inc., Dallas County 4-H Clubs and the DFW Photography Club, attendees can learn about the importance of Texas agriculture in everyday life. Fun, hands-on activities featuring various aspects of Texas agriculture are provided. 3. Reverchon Roundup In 2010, TSRHC and the Friends of Reverchon Park-a nonprofit corporation established to support the historic park-hosted the 12th Reverchon Roundup, a large-scale community volunteer effort which takes place in Reverchon Park adjacent to TSRHC. Volunteers remove trash, clear underbrush and fallen tree limbs, spread mulch and plant flowers. TSRHC initiated the Reverchon Park Revitalization Project in 1998 to help make the park cleaner and safer for members of the Dallas/Fort Worth community. Additional organizations involved in the cleanup efforts include City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department - West Region, Arborilogical Services, Inc., Dallas Police Department, Plains Capital Bank, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Starbucks, ExxonMobil, Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek and Southwest Airlines. Therapeutic Recreation: TSRHC is committed to caring for the overall health of the child, both physically and emotionally. TSRHC is able to extend its medical treatment to Texas children through the community outreach and education provided to patients and their families by the hospital's Therapeutic Recreation department. Therapeutic Recreation's inpatient program provides daily services for children staying in the hospital as well as service consults for outpatients as part of their clinic experience. In addition, the department provides outreach programs to help connect TSRHC patients to resources in the community. In addition to the core community outreach programs described below, the hospital also provides therapy-based programs such as the Chance to Dance program, Rite 2 Play, Summer All Stars and equipment loans. 1. Patient Support Learn to Golf: Launched by the Therapeutic Recreation department in 1998, Learn to Golf (LTG) provides the tools and instruction needed for young patients to experience the rehabilitative benefits of the game of golf. LTG has served 890 TSRHC patients across Texas. In addition, more than 280 golf and allied health care professionals have been trained to teach golf to TSRHC patients. The program also provides golf equipment and scholarships for follow-up lessons. Recreational Camps: Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children sponsors seven camps for patients ranging from ages 4 to 17. Each camp helps foster independence and self-confidence, while developing and improving communication and problem solving skills for TSRHC patients. The camps include Camp Carpe Diem, Hand Camp, Camp TLC, Camp Just Like Me, Camp Out On A Limb, HD2 and Camp Joint Adventure. 2. Family Support TSRHC defines its commitment to the whole child to include support for the patient family. Whether it is connecting families who have children with similar conditions or helping families find the specialized resources they need, TSRHC is dedicated to the well-being of each patient, both physically and emotionally. Some ways that TSRHC gives back in this area include: Family Resource Center: The Center helps families find helpful resources and provides referrals to other medical providers for medical conditions not treated here at TSRHC as well as organized support groups for those conditions. Family Room and Chapel: The Chapel is primarily utilized by patient families as a comfortable surgery waiting area and a place of worship with nondenominational services every Sunday. Child Life Playroom: The Playroom features staff specialists who focus on each patient and their family's specific needs by promoting optimal psychosocial development. For example, child life specialists assist in the preparation and support for medical procedures, as well as teach patients and their families coping techniques, such as medical play, to help decrease any fear or anxiety. Family Services Department: The Department serves as a support center for patients and families in three primary areas: medical social work; the coordination of out-of-hospital medical exams, tests and evaluations; and patient interpretation and translation services. Dyslexia Center: The TSRHC Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders was founded when Dr. Lucius Waites joined the hospital staff in 1965 and developed a center to evaluate and treat children with learning disabilities, specifically dyslexia. In 1968, at the invitation of Dr. Waites, the World Federation of Neurology met at TSRHC and developed the first consensus medical definition of dyslexia. Today, TSRHC provides a variety of services to children diagnosed with dyslexia. These children have trouble connecting sounds to letter symbols, affecting the way they learn to read and spell. The TSRHC Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia specializes in services for children with learning problems in reading, writing, and math. Our Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia evaluations are designed to identify reading disorders including Dyslexia, Disorders of Written Expression, and Math Disorders. Services benefit both the local Dallas Fort Worth area, the state of Texas, and multiple other states, and include; academic assessment, dyslexia therapist training, educational outreach and related research. If the center is unable to meet a child's needs, the staff at TSRHC's Christi Carter Urschel Family Resource Center can provide referrals for appropriate services at the parent's request. 1. Dyslexia Therapist Training The Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia offers the Dyslexia Therapist Training Program for certified Texas public school teachers. This two-year comprehensive training is designed for teachers of students with dyslexia using proven intervention techniques and is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Educational Council. The program offers training in: - Educational identification of dyslexia - Characteristics of dyslexia - Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia developed at TSRHC which is a multi-sensory, structured approach to teaching - Classroom strategies and techniques used for students with dyslexia - How to conduct parent and teacher information seminars 2. Learning Disorders Educational Outreach The center's outreach services allow TSRHC to expand our mission and help thousands of children through support services for parents and educators. Staff in the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia has developed two video curricula, the Dyslexia Training Program and the TSRH Literacy Program, that have taught hundreds of thousands of children to read. The center offers consultation and training to schools as they use the programs. The center offers seminars and workshops to help teachers employ effective teaching strategies. Parents can also obtain guidance in helping their child by attending presentations made to parent support groups and parent education. Take Time to Read (3TR) is a public awareness program TSRHC participates in to educate adults about the importance of reading to young children. The program began in 1999 and has helped spread the word throughout Texas about the benefits of reading to children. 3. Dyslexia Research The Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia's research program focuses on the causeCommunityBuildingActivities
