F99Z_P01_S00_L05aForm 990-EZ, Part I, Line 5aThis transaction represents the theft of JAG's EZGo Maintenance Cart in the month of September 2010. No actual sale occurred. The original purchase price was $8,133 and JAG received an insurance settlement of $7,633 after a $500 deductible. Please refer to "Exhibit B" for a detailed explanation.
F99Z_P01_S00_L16Form 990-EZ, Part I, Line 16Other expenses for CY2010 include Insurance, a catering deposit for the 2011 "Brush with Nature" event, Banking Fees, IT costs associated with Website Hosting and Development, IT costs associated with e-mail campaigns, Donations and Memberships with other non-profit organizations, Volunteer workday expenses, and Miscellaneous supplies. A detailed schedule of total expenses is provided as "Exhibit C" for any users of this return.
F99Z_P01_S00_L20Form 990-EZ, Part I, Line 20JAG used grant funds provided by the United Way Champion Zones program to purchase several pieces of durable, motorized equipment in CY2010 with an expected useful life of 5 years. JAG also purchased a steel transportation container with an expected useful life of 10 years for storing this equipment. Straight-Line depreciation will be used to calculate the book value of these assets. Please refer to "Exhibit D" provided with a copy of this return for details on individual assets and depreciation amounts.
F99Z_P02_S00_L24Form 990-EZ, Part II, Line 24Other Assets include two STIHL Chain Saws, a STIHL Backpack Blower, a STIHL Handheld blower, two STIHL Trimmers, and a 20-foot steel transportation container. The equipment is used for the maintenance and development of the park and is stored on-site in the locked container.
F99Z_P03_S00_L28Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line (28-31)The calendar year 2010 was one of great success for Jacksonville Arboretum and Gardens (JAG) as measured by progress toward our organizational goals. With the help of more than 200 volunteers, community service workers, and board members we cleared and opened the 1-mile "Rosemary Ridge" trail that passes through multiple ecosystems. This trail includes a large foot bridge that traverses a small creek by the entrance and scenic views of unique areas in the park. Poor-quality soil in the parking area was removed and the first phase of our Parking Area Landscaping project was completed. This project included the planting of more than 50 trees around the parking area and other areas in the park. Utilizing the services of a professional arborist and members of the board we prepared areas around Lake Ray for a large-scale planting of trees, flowering trees, and shrubs. This tree planting created some of our first "collection areas" of related species and we placed extensive signage to label each specimen. Our Lake Loop trail was re-graded and altered to make it ADA compatible so that those with disabilities may have easier access to the park. The lake loop trail doubles as a service road for maintenance access. Working with the First Coast Invasive Working Group we eliminated many invasive species in multiple areas of the park. With the help of an Eagle Scout candidate we established a picnic area under several of our live oak trees with five picnic tables for the public use. A drainpipe was installed at the northeast corner of Lake Ray to ensure proper drainage and maintain consistent water levels in the lake. JAG held numerous events to increase public awareness and enjoyment of the natural environment the park provides. We hosted the Mayor's Second Annual Great Tree Festival in February 2010, multiple Owl Prowls and campfire events for the public, the JaxParks Easter "Eggstravaganza" in April 2010, and the grand opening of the Rosemary Ridge Trail in November 2010. JAG continues to be a woodland oasis located in a busy, urban area that offers the public a place to experience and learn about the natural environment around them. A complete accounting for contributions and expenses is provided in Exhibits A through D for any users of this return.

ExplanationOur 2010 form 990 was delayed while we sought advice from the IRS on how to correctly report the theft of our EZGo maintenance cart. We filed a form 8868 for a 3-month extension in May 2011. The form 8868 was accepted.Explanation
