DescDeveloping vibrant rural communities: the Center strengthens the vitality of rural communities and their ability to attract new residents and entrepreneurs. The Center served 56 communities through programs, investment, fundraising assistance, and project implementation; continued property redevelopment (through our subsidiary Sustainable Forest Futures); and delivered complementary programming in 10 focal communities including Bethel, Greenville, and Millinocket, ME; Tupper Lake, Chester, and Elizabethtown, NY; and Newport and St. Johnsbury, VT. Highlights of FY25 include: Completed redevelopment of historic buildings in St. Johnsbury, VT, and Bethel ME, into 9 apartments each for area residents and workers. Continued to manage Maine West, a collaborative of diverse non-profits in Bethel, Rumford, South Paris, and Norway, ME, to implement projects to secure economic, education, health and conservation benefits. Secured a $1.2-million grant from the US Department of Labor to create and support a workforce development program serving 4 school districts and the Katahdin Higher Education Center in the Moosehead-Katahdin region and managed a similar program serving 4 school districts in Western Maine. Implemented the fourth year of the Attracting New Residents Strategy in the Adirondacks through downtown revitalization, community-based recreation, community marketing, and middle-market housing in Tupper Lake and Elizabethtown, NY. Invested more than $100,000 in trail and recreation improvements focused on serving community-oriented projects, reducing barriers to youth participation in outdoor recreation, and improving trail sustainability across Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and the Adirondacks. Doubled the size of the Bike Borderlands collaborative by adding locations serving Caroga, the High Peaks, and the Upper Hudson regions of NY; Stowe, Newport, and Williston, VT; Mt. Washington Valley, NH; and the Moosehead region of ME to expand quality mountain biking experiences for residents and visitors while stewarding the natural landscape and securing economic benefits for communities. The new locations join ongoing Borderlands members in Gorham, Franconia, and Littleton, NH; Bethel and Carrabassett Valley, ME; East Burke and Craftsbury, VT; and East Hereford, Quebec.Details are available at www.northernforest.org.Desc

Form 990 Part 1, Line 1 continuedby connecting people, economy, and the forested landscape across the 30-million-acre Northern Forest of northern Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. The Center's programming focuses on strengthening rural communities, enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors, and fostering regional innovation in the forest-based economy, including wood products, outdoor recreation, and Modern Wood Heat. We bring collaborative leadership, new ideas, program delivery, investment, and public policy expertise to renew the pride, purpose and vitality of the region's communities while advancing a forest stewardship ethic. Since 2005, the Center's programs have: 1. Benefited more than 10,000 jobs in the forest economy. 2. Conserved 259,219 acres of managed forestland for community benefit. 3. Secured and leveraged $260 million for projects that benefit the region's communities, the economy and forest stewardship.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11bA draft copy of the Form 990 is provided to the president and treasurer for review, discussion and revision. The approved final draft of the return is provided to the full board prior to filing the return.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cBoth board and staff are subject to the organization's conflict of interest policy. Where any direct or indirect transaction by the Center involving a director is greater than $500 but less than $5,000 in a fiscal year, a two-thirds vote of the disinterested directors is required to approve the transaction as it is in support of the Centers mission. Where any transaction or set of transactions exceeds $5,000 in a fiscal year, a two-thirds vote of the disinterested directors to approve the transaction as it is in support of the Centers mission, notice of the transaction to the New Hampshire Director of Charitable Trusts, and publication in the local newspaper is required prior to the transaction taking place. In addition, the minutes of the meeting shall reflect that the conflict was disclosed and the director in question was absent, and shall record any actual vote.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15Assuming board members to be considered independent persons in this case. Previous board chair used COLA and market salary data to implement a three-year compensation plan for the President of the organization. Current chair implemented Year 2 of this plan this fiscal year.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19Summarized financial information is presented in the annual report, mailed to active supporters and partners and available on our website and includes a note that the audited financial statements, governing documents and conflict of interest policy are available upon request from the main office.
