Mission DescriptionLifeLink Foundation is a non-profit community service organization dedicated to the recovery of life-saving and life-enhancing organs and tissue for transplantation therapy. The Foundation works in a sensitive, diligent, and compassionate manner to facilitate the donation of desperately needed organs and tissues for waiting patients, support research efforts to enhance the available supply of organs and tissue for transplant patients, improve clinical outcomes of patients post transplantation and works closely with the United Network For Organ Sharing (UNOS) to support its goals.MissionDescription

DescriptionOrgan Procurement Organizations (OPOs):LifeLink's organ recovery organizations possess a threefold role: we support donor families during a time of unimaginable loss, endeavor to save as many lives as possible, and honor the inspiring decisions made by donors themselves. We place high value on our relationships with hospital administrators, physicians, nurses and medical ancillary departments who help make donation happen every day, and during the 2009-2010 year, our united efforts resulted in 541 organ donor recoveries. In Georgia, we accomplished record numbers. Each of our successes begin with the passionate effort of our hospital development departments, whose daily work in hospitals across our service area make the donation process possible. Each opportunity to provide the Gift of Life encouraged us to seek ways to sustain the gains made, yet our pride remains overshadowed by a drive to accomplish more. All LifeLink OPOs successfully completed CMS recertification. We also continued to utilize Best Practices, such as donor advisory committees and after action reviews, which served as evidence of successful pathways we've created, as well as our dedication to meeting the needs of our hospital partners, before, during and after donation. In Georgia, we participated in a Palliative Care Symposium, increased utilization of intensivists for donor management, and sought out innovative pathways for donation to occur, such as enhancing our partnerships and extending additional physician outreach and education within transplant centers. Florida's team expanded the Designated Service Area Symposium, allowing critical care nurses to work with physicians, other members of the care team and LifeLink to improve the donation process. These peer to peer educational sessions help the strongest hospital-based supporters of donation ensure everyone within the department had the ability to resolve any problems on a 24/7 basis. In Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, our policies and procedures were strengthened to enhance the opportunity for donating life and resulted in nearly 100 organ donors who saved hundreds of lives.Description

DescriptionTissue Bank:Each donation creates a unique wonder: a cartilage transplant allows a mother to wrap her arms around her child again. The serious burns on a child heal through the miracle of skin donation. A bone allograft restores mobility to the athlete. Last year, as a result of LifeLink's efforts, 30,223 allografts were used in surgical procedures. In Georgia, the generosity of a donor allowed LifeLink Tissue Bank to perform its 15,000th tissue recovery. Our partnership with TransLife, Orlando's organ and tissue recovery organization, continued to strengthen. We began performing family requesting services to gain consent for tissue donation as well as medical screening and answering service functions. And the advent of our new, state-of-the-art 54,000 square foot Tissue Bank facility in Tampa will enable us to reach more milestones, and help more people. Years of meticulous planning produced a building which boasts an air exchange technology surpassing levels currently found in most of the country's operating rooms. The automation system represents the most advanced technology currently available. Preparation such as this ensures our record for zero documented disease transmissions will remain unbroken. More than 100 LifeLink administrative, clinical and quality assurance employees call the building their "home away from home." It represents the first step for the property, which stretches past 11 acres. Plans have already begun for Phase II, to accommodate additional staff.Although the facility itself represents a weighty accomplishment, it wasn't enough to create a state-of-the-art Tissue Bank. We also wanted a place commemorating donors and their tremendous gifts. When visitors arrive, they are immediately greeted by a flowering magnolia tree and stone donor memorial, dedicated to the selfless decision to restore the lives of others.Description

DescriptionTransplantation Immunology Laboratory:The respectful balance between gifts made by organ donors and the needs of potential transplant recipients begins in the Transplantation Immunology Laboratory. We approach our work with ardent intensity, knowing that every day, the waiting list grows. Nine different transplant programs, in three separate hospitals, rely on our ability to identify safe, compatible matches. Our advanced approach includes gaining insight to patient antibody specificity and donor HLA antigens, as well as identifying false positive reactions in the crossmatching process. The result of these efforts translate to an expanded donor pool, and transplants for individuals who would not have otherwise received the Gift of Life. Last year, our "matchmaking" helped make more than 390 transplants possible. We performed evaluations on 1,200 individuals, including new patients and potential living donors. And we continued our post-transplant monitoring tests, allowing us to accurately predict rejection episodes - a vital function which assists clinicians in developing the safest and most appropriate reduction or increase in anti-rejection regiments. Last year, we performed these tests for more than 6,700 transplant recipients. We will never stop our efforts to progress the science of transplant immunology. The term "matchmaker" is very appropriate, as organ donation and transplantation epitomize a distinctive marriage between compassion and science. We could not imagine a more significant inspiration.Description

DescriptionCommunity Education:88 million Americans are designated organ and tissue donors. In many states, online registries allow them to record their wishes; those same registries are updated each time someone has their organ donor status recorded when receiving or renewing their drivers' licenses. LifeLink is the conduit which makes donation and transplantation possible, but members of the general public actually give the Gift of Life. We design community outreach and educational programs to reach a wide spectrum of audiences and continually seek out new pathways for communication. The Public Affairs staff worked closely with Donate Life Florida and Donate Life Georgia to focus efforts on donor registrations.Last year, the number of registered donors increased by 8.7% in Florida to 5.4 million and 6.4% in Georgia to 3.6 million. LifeLink of Florida paid particular attention to the 50 offices in our service area that issue driver licenses; regular visits, annual in-service trainings, and measurement of registrations occurred within each region. Special promotions during Donate Life month further solidified our relationships. These efforts greatly contributed to the 171,030 donor designations made in the Florida service area. LifeLink of Georgia continued the tradition of honoring donor families with two Services of Remembrance, and also welcomed more than 1,200 hours of volunteer assistance toward community outreach, resulting in 248,000 donor designations over the past year. Both Georgia and Florida established strong ties within high schools; information about donation was presented to more than 14,000 students between the two states. LifeLink of Puerto Rico recognized its 15th anniversary and made great progress toward establishing a donor registry; and the groundwork laid last year will hopefully result in a 2011 launch. In addition, more than 50 new Workplace Partners shared the importance of organ and tissue donation with their employees. Multicultural donation education programs (MDEP) included the LifeLink Festival and Health Fair, where more than 1,200 visitors gathered, as well as the First Hispanic Media Lunch Meeting, at which 13 different news agencies pledged to support donation through news releases and public service announcements. Each agency also agreed to share information with their employees about the Gift of Life. In addition, campaigns were held at predominantly black colleges and universities and gospel concerts spread the "Donate Life" message.Description
