DescriptionArt Exhibitions:Gallery Presentations: The ICA presented the following 13 contemporary art exhibitions and commissioned projects featuring painting, drawing, sculpture, video, installation, and more. General admission attendance for the gallery exhibits totaled 153,545 visitors in FY10. (see schedule o for continuation.)* ICA Collection: Potrait of a Museum: (7/30/08 - 7/12/09)This third installation of the ICA's growing permanent collection, Portrait of a Museum focused on how ICA collection artists have been influenced by the major global and environmental shifts that mark our century, and their human impact. Our rapidly evolving world was presented through a mix of sculpture, video, photography, painting, and drawing. New acquisitions were featured by artists Kader Attia, Louise Bourgeois, Ambreen Butt, and Roe Ethridge among others. The curator gave a public talk in the gallery space.* Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall: Ugo Rondinone: (11/4/08 - 1/3/10)For the third installation of the Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall, a space in the ICA lobby dedicated to monumental, site-specific works by leading contemporary artists, Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone created Clockwork for oracles - a dynamic new installation covering the Art Wall with 52 mirrored glass windows in a rainbow of colors and variety of sizes. Clockwork for oracles asked us to contemplate the nature of time, while also inviting us to enjoy its playful sensory delight. The exhibition was accompanied by a free brochure. The curator gave a public talk about the work.* Shepard Fairey: Supply and Demand: (2/6/09 - 8/16/09) This exhibition traced the development of Shepard Fairey's twenty-year career, from his humble beginnings as an art student pasting homemade Andre the Giant stickers in the streets of Boston, through to his iconic 2008 portrait of Barack Obama, acquired by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. The exhibition presented over 250 screenprints, stencils, stickers, rubylith templates, collages, and works on wood, metal, and canvas. The artist created a new mural for the ICA, and public installations at eleven sites around Boston, including City Hall. A fully-illustrated catalogue was re-printed to coincide with the exhibition, and the exhibition was accompanied by a free brochure. ICA curators gave public talks in the gallery space. Shepard Fairey gave a public talk and was deejay at a sold-out music event at the museum. The exhibition toured nationally to the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh (10/17/09 - 1/30/10; total attendance 27,801), and the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati (2/20 - 8/22/10; total attendance 41,400).* Momentum 13: Eileen Quinlan: (3/18/09 - 7/12/09) For her first solo museum exhibition, Boston-born artist Eileen Quinlan presented an installation of photographs entitled My Eyes Can Only Look at You. Employing analog techniques in an era of digital manipulation, Quinlan created kaleidoscopic or atmospheric abstract images using the standard tricks of commercial film photography. The exhibition was accompanied by a free brochure. The artist and curator gave a public talk in the gallery space. * Acting Out: Social Experiments in Video: (3/18/09 - 10/18/09) The exhibition introduced a new generation of five contemporary artists exploring the expressive potential of social experiment in video. Yael Bartana, Johanna Billing, Phil Collins, Javier Tellez and Artur Zmijewski invited real people-non-actors-to be taped responding to challenging scenarios. By leaving acting out, to let unscripted action unfold, these works highlighted the forces of isolation, connection, and friction that shape our national, social, and personal identities. The exhibition was accompanied by a free brochure. The curator gave a public talk in the gallery space.* Momentum 14: Rodney McMillian: (7/29/09 - 11/1/10) Rodney McMillian, born in Columbia, South Carolina and based in Los Angeles, created a new multimedia installation for Momentum 14, the artist's first solo museum exhibition in the U.S. The installation, entitled Sentimental Disappointment, addressed themes of race, identity, and commerce in contemporary American society. Deeply interested in social history and culture, McMillian often combines different forms-such as painting, found photographs, and a cast-off carpet and chair-in dynamic installations that reveal how past ideas relate to the present. His installation at the ICA/Boston included a large-scale painting on canvas spanning the length of a gallery wall, a video, and sculptures made using furniture from his home. The Momentum series examines new developments in contemporary art, inviting artists from the U.S. and around the world to present work at the ICA. This exhibition was accompanied by a free brochure. The artist and curator gave a public talk in the gallery space.* ICA Collection: In the Making: (7/29/09 - 7/18/10) This fourth installation of the ICA's growing permanent collection, In the Making, featured new acquisitions, with a focus on artists' process and materials in the making of their signature works. Separate galleries devoted to photography, sculpture, and painting each invited an in-depth look at how artistic approaches to medium transform familiar subjects into resonant images and experiences. Work by photographers including Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Roe Ethridge and Nan Goldin presented a range of approaches that expand notions of the medium. Sculpture and video works by artists including Tara Donovan, Kader Attia and Cornelia Parker incorporated unexpected fragments of our daily lives into forms both familiar and surprising. Powerful, emotionally raw paintings and drawings offered a focused look at South African-born, Amsterdam-based artist Marlene Dumas. The curators gave public talks in the gallery space.*Damian Ortega: Do It Yourself: (9/18/09 - 1/18/10) Born in 1967 in Mexico City, Damian Ortega is one of the most prominent artists of the new Mexican generation. This exhibition, the first-ever survey of Ortega's work, showed the arc of his artistic output with a range of sculpture, installation, video, and photography. In Ortega's work, objects are never allowed to rest-they are pulled apart, suspended, or rearranged, calling attention to the dynamism of the world around us and the hidden poetry in the everyday. A former political cartoonist, Ortega brings a subtle, incisive wit to his surprising manipulations of familiar, humble materials-bricks, old tools, Coca-Cola bottles, tortillas, and even a Volkswagen Beetle are assembled and reassembled in playful and imaginative ways. A fully-illustrated, bilingual catalogue accompanied the exhibition. ICA curators gave public talks in the gallery space. In a related public program, cultural critic/journalist Josh Kun presented an evening program on how the flow of ideas and individuals affects cultural production, as heard in today's music from Mexico. * Momentum 15: R.H. Quaytman: (11/18/09 - 3/28/10) For the fifteenth exhibition in our Momentum series, Boston-born, New York based artist R. H. Quaytman presented new paintings inspired by the past exhibitions and educational mission of the ICA, its history of presenting the "contemporary," and the architecture of the Momentum gallery. Entitled Exhibition Guide, Chapter 15, this was the artist's first solo museum exhibition. Quaytman incorporates optical abstractions, silkscreened photographs, diamond dust layers, and hand-painted trompe l'oeil elements into her works to weave personal, art historical, and formal narratives. Presented in groups she considers "chapters," Quaytman's works invite the viewer to look from one painting to another, considering individual works within the context of the group. The exhibition was accompanied by a free brochure. The artist and curator gave a public talk in the gallery space.* Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall: Wish Lists and Wrong Numbers: (1/16/10 - 2/7/10) On the Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall, we presented a temporary installation of two engaging works from the museum's collection: Rachel Perry Welty's Karaoke Wrong Number and Kelly Sherman's Wish Lists. Both works were included in the 2006 James and Audrey Foster Prize exhibition, which featured the four finalists for our biennial award given to a Boston-area artist of exceptional promise. Sherman and Welty both use the detritus of our digital age to create thoughtful, funny, and surprisingly elegant commentaries on contemporary culture.Description

IdentifierIdentifierExplanationExplanationReturn ReferenceReturnReference
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11Form 990 is reviewed by the ICA's CFO/COO for completeness and then is forwarded to the ICA's Audit Committee for review and discussion with outside independent accountants. The Audit Committee is charged with approving the Form 990 for submittal to the IRS. Prior to sending the Form 990 to the IRS the ICA's CFO/COO will send a copy of the document to each ICA Trustee.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cEach fall, the ICA requests its Trustees and key employees to disclose any conflict of interest on a disclosure statement. The purpose of the conflict of interest policy is to give guidance to the ICA's leaders about areas of conflict of interest so that conflicts, real or perceived, may be identified early, disclosed, and resolved appropriately. Ideally, this policy will protect the ICA's interests when it is contemplating entering into a transaction or arrangement that might benefit the private interests of an officer or trustee. In connection with any actual or possible conflict of interest, a Fiduciary shall disclose all material facts to the President, Chairperson or Director at the earliest possible time after the situation becomes known to the Fiduciary. The Fiduciary shall also disclose such matters on an annual basis at the time the Fiduciary signs the annual statement of this policy, or other reporting and certification procedures as the Board of Trustees shall require from time to time. After disclosure of the Financial Interest and all material facts, and after any discussion with the Fiduciary, the Executive Committee of the Board shall finally determine whether any conflict of interest exists. If the Fiduciary is present for this discussion, then the Fiduciary shall leave the Executive Committee of the Board meeting while the determination of conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon. If the Executive Committee of the Board determines that a conflict exists with respect to a transaction, the Executive Committee of the Board shall: (a)allow the Fiduciary to make a presentation to the Executive Committee of the Board, but after such presentation, the Fiduciary with the Financial Interest shall leave the meeting during the discussion of, and the vote on, the transaction that involves the conflict of interest; (b)appoint, if the Executive Committee of the Board deems it appropriate to do so, a non interested person or committee to investigate alternatives to the transaction; (c)determine, by a majority vote of the non interested Trustee members of the Executive Committee present, whether the transaction is in the ICA's best interest and for its own benefit; is fair and reasonable to the ICA; and, after exercising due diligence, determine whether the ICA can obtain a more advantageous transaction with reasonable efforts under the circumstances; and (d)take appropriate action with respect to any violation of this conflict of interest policy.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15The ICA's Compensation Committee which is made up of Trustees reviews the salary and compensation of its Director and key employees on an annual basis using compensation data for comparable positions from the American Association of Museums.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19the organization makes its governing documents, conlfict of interest policy, form 990 and audited financial statements available to the public upon request. In addition, The organization's form 990 is available via guidestar and the Massachusetts attorney general's website.
form 990, part xi, line 2cThe organization has a committee that assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of an independent accountant. This process has not changed from prior year.
Form 990, part III, Line 4a* Krzysztof Wodiczko: OUT OF HERE...: (11/4/09 - 3/28/10) In a new, projection-based work created for the ICA, Polish-born, Cambridge, MA- and New York-based artist Krzysztof Wodiczko explored the chaos and confusion of war through the creation of an immersive multimedia installation based on his interviews with veterans engaged in active combat in Iraq, as well as with Iraqi civilians. In this work, Wodiczko, who for three decades has addressed timely political, social and psychological issues in his artwork, created a scenario that unfolded across three walls of the gallery, using complex audio as well as visual images to present a narrative in which the routine sounds of life were interrupted by the noise of destruction and chaos in a chronicle based on the artist's contact with medics, soldiers and refugees affected by the current conflict in Iraq, who described their experiences and shared with the artist video and audio of life during wartime. The exhibition was accompanied by a free brochure. The artist participated in a free Veteran's Day program, speaking in conversation with veterans of the Iraqi war and an Iraqi civilian. The curator also gave public talks in the gallery space. * Roni Horn AKA Roni Horn: (2/19/09 - 6/13/10) Organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, in association with Tate Modern, London, the exhibition traveled to the ICA as the final stop on its tour. The most comprehensive survey of the American artist's work to date, Roni Horn aka Roni Horn presented three decades of Horn's art, including sculptures, photographs, collaged drawings, artist books, sound works, and installations. For the first time, in addition to work in our West Gallery, this major exhibition featured works in the museum's lobby: a five-ton glass sculpture Pink Tons and a.k.a., a series of paired self-portraits. The diversity of Horn's works reflects her ongoing exploration of how one's identity and memory can be as changeable and fleeting as flowing water, weather, and time. Many works are composed of pairs, multi-sided parts, or series that invite comparison between their elements. Horn's work prompts us to consider the ways we see and understand our personal experience and memory, the passage of time, and the changing conditions around us. The exhibition was accompanied by a free brochure. ICA curators gave public talks in the gallery space. The artist engaged in a public conversation about her work with filmmaker John Waters in a related evening program. Gallery talks by Cindy Dickinson, Director of Interpretation and Programming at the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst, Massachusetts, and Scott V. Edwards, Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Curator of Ornithology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, were presented free to the public. * Dr. Lakra: (4/14/10 - 9/6/10) The ICA presented the first U.S. solo exhibition of Dr. Lakra, a Mexico-based artist and world-renowned tattooist. In Dr. Lakra's work, the idealized images of 1950s pin-up girls, wrestlers and Mexican businessmen are tattooed with drawings of demons, skulls, snakes and spiders. No surface escapes the artist's pen-everything from vintage magazines and Japanese prints to plastic cups and Kewpie dolls are covered with his provocative and macabre drawings. The work combines a diverse range of patterns and symbols-such as Chicano, Maori, Thai and ancient Aztec imagery-with pop culture and erotica to create a tantalizing mix of life, death and desire. The curator and the artist gave a public talk in the gallery space and in the theater. The exhibition will tour internationally to two venues in Mexico: Museo Amparo, Puebla (2/5 - 5/9/11), and MARCO, Monterrey (5/19 - 9/4/11).Program Service Accomplishment
