DescriptionMuseum Membership approx. 2,211: Visitation approx. 64,500 annually - The Museum's art collection consists of almost 5,000 catalogued works by more than 600 artists. The work of these artists represents historic images and styles which have shaped public perception of wilderness, wildlife and the American west. Artists represented include Carl Rungius, George Catlin, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, C.M. Russell, Albert Bierstadt, Conrad Schwiering, John Clymer and Bob Kuhn. Capitalizing on the Museum's setting near the big game habitats of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, the NMWA collection is utilized in a variety of educational programs. Over 40 volunteers, ranging in age from teens to senior citizens, assist the Museum staff in all facets of the Museum's operation. Our "First Sundays" program offers free admission to locals on the first Sunday of every month. During the winter months, a free community performance series is offered on these days, as well as hands-on art projects for children in the museum classrooms.Description

Description2009-2010 Changing Exhibits The Choice is Yours: 10 Years of Collectors Circle - Gilcrease and Changing Visions Galleries Extended from fiscal year 2008-2009, closed August 23, 2009. With artwork ranging from St. Jerome Penitent in the Landscape, a 1496 print by Albrecht Durer, to Opulent Owl, a 2001 stone carving by Steve Kestrel, the Collectors Circle has purchased over 60 works of art for the NMWA Permanent Collection since 1998. Celebrating 10 years of collecting, this exhibit displayed the broad range of important material the Circle has helped the museum collect. Each year members of Collectors Circle are offered a range of artwork that includes the best in painting, sculpture, and prints, from both historic masters and up-and-coming artists. The Choice is Yours features the majority of pieces purchased by the Circle. In addition to a full description of how Collectors Circle works, the exhibit interpretive material discusses collection priorities and other methods the museum employs to add significant artwork to the permanent collection. The Lorax: Original Illustrations by Dr. Seuss, From the Lyndon B. Johnson Library Bison Gallery May 9-Sept 7, 2009 This exhibit presented a combination of original sketches plus camera-ready drawings created by Theodore Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, for the publication of his acclaimed book, The Lorax. In Dr. Seuss's own inimitable style, The Lorax includes a variety of fantastical wildlife species such as Brown Bar-ba-loots, Humming-Fish, and Swomee-Swans. Seuss was not one to shy away from contemporary topics or social commentary. The Lorax is among his most pointed, taking to task a company whose greed causes grave environmental harm. This exhibit combined original art as it probes humanity's relationship with nature, making a perfect match for the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Patrons Without Peer: Selections from the McCloy Collection Kuhn Gallery June 13-October 4, 2009 The McCloy Collection ranks as one of the most significant assemblages of contemporary wildlife art in the nation, and includes multiple paintings by three artists the museum holds in high esteem: Bob Kuhn, Ken Carlson, and Tucker Smith. These three artists are widely regarded as the premiere wildlife painters of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Coinciding with the publication of a book on the McCloys, the Museum displayed a selection of works from their collection. This exhibit will give visitors the rare chance to view masterworks from a private collection that have never before been publicly exhibited together. This exhibit represents the Museum's ongoing dedication to presenting the work of today's best contemporary artists. Wyoming Winners: Junior Duck Stamp King Gallery May 2-Aug 23, 2009 Each summer the winners of Wyoming's Jr. Duck Stamp competition are displayed in the Museum's King Gallery. The Natural World: Photographs by Tom Mangelson King Gallery October 3, 2009-May 16, 2010 The Natural World was a retrospective exhibit of the work of renowned nature photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen. This exhibition contained panoramic images selected from over 20 years of dedicated picture-making. The Natural World took viewers on a journey to 10 unique refugees of diverse life on earth, chronicling Mangelsen's experiences through photographs and excerpts from his journals. Mangelsen's travels span the globe, including Alaska, Wyoming, Canada, Africa, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, India, Iceland, and Antarctica. The vastness, beauty, and delicacy of the earth are all evident in these pictures. In this age of climate change and the threat of vanishing species, this exhibit brought the intensity of these fragile places to our doorstep. A Change of Seasons: Wildlife in Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall Gilcrease and Changing Visions Galleries Oct 31, 2009 - March 14, 2010 TD Kelsey's A Change of Seasons greets every visitor as they drive up Rungius Road to the Museum. His work depicts two bison, one lying down; both are shedding their heavy coats as winter gives way to spring. Taking a cue from Kelsey's work, the National Museum of Wildlife Art presented A Change of Seasons, which focused on how artists have interpreted how wildlife responds to the four seasons. A Diverse View of the West: Works on Paper from the Permanent Collection Members Gallery Oct 10, 2009-May 2 2010 The National Museum of Wildlife Art's collection of works on paper contains a wide variety of artwork, ranging from historic etchings to contemporary large-scale pastels, with particular strength in subjects related to the American West. Paper has been a popular support for a variety of media since the first artist-explorers journeyed beyond the frontier. After sketching the wonders of the West in ink, watercolor, or graphite, artists often used their field studies as reference material for larger works on canvas. Collection Spotlight: Rosa Bonheur and the European Tradition Kuhn Gallery Oct 24 2009-March 28, 2010 During the late 1800s and early 1900s artists such as Eugene Bracht, Geza Vastagh, and Rudolph Ernst were highly respected painters and each incorporated wildlife into their oeuvres. The reputations of academically trained artists such as those featured in this exhibition suffered with the lionization of impressionists and post-impressionists during the 20th century. Consequently, many of these artists are virtually unknown today, but their contributions to the field deserve recognition. One of the biggest celebrities and best-known painters of this era was Rosa Bonheur. This exhibited featured Bonheur's King of the Forest, a fitting work representing the culmination of Bonheur's career, plus artwork by her contemporaries.Description

SFAS 116Schedule D, Part III, Line 1aPursuant to an option provided by SFAS No. 116, the Museum does not capitalize its art collection. In so doing, the art is held for public exhibition and education. Proceeds from sales of collection items are used to acquire other items for the collection. The Museum's art collection consists of over 5,000 catalogued items by more than 600 different artists covering a span of over 4,000 years. The majority of the collection focuses on representations of North American wildlife by artists of European descent from the late 19th through the early 21st century. Other specific areas of specialization within the collection include the work of Carl Rungius, the work of Robert Kuhn, work depicting the American Bison, and work depicting the American West. The collection strives to represent a diverse sampling of the artists, styles and time periods in which wildlife art has been produced. Stewardship policies include written procedures for accession of art, deaccession of art, art on loan to the Museum and art on loan from the Museum. The policies also include procedures for the care of the collection such as preservation, safety and security, installation, and packaging and shipping. The policies detail the procedures for inventorying the collection, including labeling, monitoring, record keeping, and record reconciliation, access, reproduction and insurance. The Museum tracks the collection at original purchased or donated value and uses a mutually agreed upon value for loaned items, as a whole, for purposes of adequate insurance coverage. In addition, the Museum's facility is specifically designed to protect the collection from possible damage.
CollectionsSchedule D, Part III, Line 4The Museum's collection contains over 5,000 catalogued items including paintings, sculptures, prints, sketches and archival material related to wildlife and humanity's relationship with nature. The collection is used to educate everyone from general museum visitors to researchers interested in specific topics related to wildlife and nature.
Donations of ArtSchedule D, Part III, Line 5The Museum did solicit gifts of artwork to be sold. The solicitations were made only to artists for donations of their own artwork.
Use of Endowment FundsSchedule D, Part V, Line 4Long-term support of Museum operations, funding of educational programs, exhibits, curator of education position, art conservation, curatorial research and related programs.

If incurred, interest and penalties assocciated with tax positions are recorded in the period assessed as general and administrative expenses. No interest or penalties have been assessed as of April 30, 2010. Tax years that remain subject to examination include 2007 through current.

In keeping with the terms and conditions of any relevant employment contract, a recommendation is then made to the Executive Committee regarding compensation for the upcoming year, which reviews and approves the CEO's compensation. An independent salary review is performed every three years. The organization maintains the appropriate documentation of the compensation agreement.
