148335300Donor Designations: Spokane County United Way runs or coordinates three major fund-raising programs: the United Way Campaign, the Combined Federal Campaign for Eastern Washington, and the Washington State Combined Fund Drive. Many of these donations are specifically designated to qualified non-profit agencies. United Way ensures that these donations are collected and accurately distributed at least quarterly, under standards established by United Way Worldwide
13666400Community Initiatives and Public Policy: Focused on achieving desired results in Education - which is essential to getting and keeping a job with a livable wage and health benefits; Income - that provides an income adequate to pay for today's necessities and save for the future; Health - gives access to counseling services and social supports that keep children on track and adults healthy and engaged. United Way has identified three bold community goals: decrease child abuse and neglect; increase kindergarten readiness; and increase high school graduation rates. As part of our focus on improving lives, United Way works together with many community partners and is a key partner in organizing "Our Kids: Our Business." This is a month-long education and awareness campaign that brings the media, community leaders and the non-profit community together to focus on issues crucial to protecting and enhancing the lives of children in Spokane County
121248498850Financial Stability: As part of a community coalition of business, community and government representatives, United Way supports free tax preparation which targets low income workers by providing cost-free tax preparation along with financial education and debt management that create and build assets for low income people. United Way secured a grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce which provided a portion of the funding for these services. In the service year over $5.2 million in tax refunds and credits were returned to our community and 97 families avoided foreclosures on their homes. Other accomplishments included 150 individuals receiving financial education, and 85 individuals obtained Individual Development Account (IDA) funding for first time home purchases, small business expenses, or post-secondary education expense.
7044500Volunteer Services: United Way serves as a volunteer center for Spokane County, coordinating opportunities for individuals and groups to volunteer with local nonprofit organizations. United Way's website features "Volunteer Solutions", an on-line data base of current volunteer opportunities in the community. In the service year, United Way matched 770 volunteers to service opportunities, resulting in 3470 volunteer service hours. United Way coordinated a "Days of Caring" Program, wherein thirteen local employers loaned 156 employees to work on projects supporting the human care programs of area non-profit organizations.
4210700Labor Services: Spokane County United Way Labor services works with the labor community to educate interested members about available health and human care services, recruit volunteers for food drives, recruit and place members of organized labor with volunteer opportunities of human and health care organizations, and solicit support of the United Way fundraising campaign.
481635356153340000Early Learning: Referred to jointly as "Our Kids: Ready and Resilient", United Way is partnered with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Children's Home Society, Spokane Public Schools, NEWESD, and Blue Prints for Learning to improve the social and emotional development of young children in Spokane County. Acting as the fiscal agent and grant coordinator, United Way is leveraging both grant-funded and matched organizational resources to provide training and support to improve the quality of child care teachers and child care environments so that children are ready for kindergarten. A few of the many accomplishments during the service year include: ABC Discovery Early Learning School at Goodwill industries received national accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Spokane Public Schools and West Valley School District piloted the Early Development Instrument (EDI) in Spokane, creating neighborhood maps of the relative strengths and vulnerabilities of kindergarten children. Results are being shared with teachers and parents to further conversations on how to improve school readiness. Blue Prints for Leaning has provided, through this, the second year of the training cycle, 117 child care providers with high quality Child Development Associate (CDA) training. In addition, 83 child care providers have received 20-hour State Training and Registry System (STARS) training, and 160 child care teachers have received a minimum of 10-hour STARS training that is aligned with the focus of supporting social and emotional development. Children's Home Society has continued their Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) implementation in five child care programs, involving 11 preschool classrooms, 13 teachers and 235 children. The DECA assessment tool and program identifies relative social and behavioral strengths of children ages 2 to kindergarten and then teachers use that information to inform classroom strategies and collaborate with parents to inform home strategies that will improve those measured traits. Spokane Public Schools implemented the DECA program in 20 full-day kindergarten classrooms. The Northeast Washington Education Service District (NEWESD) Resilient & Ready project supported four preschools and five kindergarten classes in four rural school districts in Stevens and Ferry County by providing training and support on implementing DECA program strategies.
