DescriptionIn fiscal year 2010, Schuylkill Medical Center - South Jackson Street admitted 8,800 Inpatients, provided emergency care for 32,000 people, delivered more than 1,030 babies, made more than 14,550 Home Health Care Visits and provided more than 96,400 Outpatient tests and procedures. The Schuylkill Health System has a comprehensive Charity care program. Charges foregone for services rendered and supplies furnished under this program amounted to $1,400,000 during fiscal year 2010.Schuylkill Health is committed to the physical, mental, and emotional health of our entire community. As a healthcare facility, we are concerned with the health awareness of our neighbors, family, and friends. Our community looks to us to help educate them on current health care topics as well as the everyday health issues that concern everyone. Through our initiatives we can reach out and help others understand where to go, what to ask, and who to see for their healthcare needs. We can give our community the confidence they need when making wise choices. Schuylkill Medical Center hosts approximately thirty (30) CHAT (Community Health Awareness Talks) a year. Our community associates Wednesday Evenings with our CHAT sessions - often asking in advance what our upcoming topics will be. We continue to listen to our community's requests for future programs and try to accommodate their busy lifestyles with "On the Road" Sessions in addition to those held at Schuylkill Medical Center - East, Schuylkill Medical Center - South, and Schuylkill Rehabilitation Center. CHAT topics include Nutrition, Physical Fitness, Diabetes Awareness, Breast Cancer Awareness, Seizure Treatments, and Heart Health to name a few.Schuylkill Health also sponsors an annual "Women's Day"; women have gathered over the past six years to attend a free event. All generations enjoy being educated, having the ability to ask questions in a comfortable setting while spending time with old and new friends, and sipping on that great cup of coffee. We explore the "whole" person - body, mind, and spirit and enable them to capture information to share with others at home, work, or in their neighborhood.Schuylkill Health recognizes the need to educate the youth and young adults of our community. Healthy life styles begin at an early age, therefore, we commit to reaching this age group. We host Teddy Bear Clinics where children bring their Teddy Bears or Special Friends to school, watch "Big Bird Goes to the Hospital", measure, weigh, and listen to their "friends" heart and receive a certificate of health. Our hope is to ease our children's visit to our Hospital with less fear and anxiety and to make them realize we are here to make them and their family members get better. As we present, we also discuss the dangers of smoking and the importance of healthy nutrition and exercise. We also partner with Penn State Schuylkill to discuss STD's with the high schools and to discuss importance of Self Breast Exam, being smart in the sun, and the dangers of drinking and driving and not wearing your seatbelt to name a few. Monthly, high school students interested in the health care field, meet through the Boy Scouts of America Explorer's Group. Each day, three people in Schuylkill County are diagnosed with cancer. With this in mind, we realize the importance of Cancer Awareness and Support. Schuylkill Medical Center hosts a Cancer Support Group for cancer survivors, family and care givers. Each month, a group of survivors gather to talk about recent treatment, how they are feeling and to celebrate life. We also host a Gentle Yoga wellness program for survivors and care givers. Those in attendance have slept better, their "hot flashes" have ceased, and they are able to relax. We hold a free Skin Cancer Screening to the general public. We screen approx. 125 people; refer 50 people. This screening saves lives. We have begun speaking about Testicular Cancer Awareness on the college level; Breast Cancer Awareness and the importance of mammography in local high schools. Diabetes numbers continue to rise, especially in Schuylkill County. We offer free Diabetes Education along with a Diabetes Support Group. Free Health screenings and wellness programs are held throughout the year at various locations in our community. Blood Pressures, Body Fat, Bone Density screenings are just a few of the services we provide at no cost to our community.Description
