Needs AssessmentPart VI, Line 2: Unlike acute care hospitals, Mathenys community is not geographical. Our community consists of people with disabilities and their families throughout the state of New Jersey and, sometimes, reaching out-of-state. It is our responsibility to spread our expertise to as many of these families as possible. We realize we cant treat everyone, but we can provide information, resources and referrals and generally serve as a sounding board to those who have nowhere else to turn.We also have a responsibility to educate the general population about the challenges facing persons with disabilities. We do this by reaching out to the community in a variety of ways. The results of our efforts, we believe, have contributed to a greater understanding of and compassion for people with disabilities.Internships/Teaching HospitalRecognizing that we cant provide care for the entire disabled population, Matheny has taken on the responsibility of ensuring that future healthcare professionals understand how to care and treat persons with disabilities. We are a teaching hospital for the Medical and Dental Schools of UMDNJ. In addition, Matheny has established internship and training programs with more than 100 colleges and universities.ResearchThe Matheny Institute for Research in Developmental Disabilities conducts research that benefits people with developmental disabilities and those who care for them. We publish our research in leading journals in the fields of disability and healthcare, and we present our research at regional, national and international conferences and, as invited, address medical schools and government-sponsored meetings. We have constructed multimedia training tools to be used by medical schools in training their students about disabilities.Matheny launched a national organization of medical school and nursing school faculty who are working to incorporate disability-related experiences into healthcare curricula. This organization is called the Alliance for Disability in Health Care Education. The Alliance has presented data on medical school curricula at national conferences. It currently has three articles that will soon be published by the nations leading journal on medical education. Dr. Kenneth Robey, Mathenys research director, is currently president of the Alliance. With a grant from the New Jersey Council on Developmental Disability, Matheny developed an online publicly accessible database of dentists who serve persons with developmental disabilities. That database can be accessed at www.disabilityhealth.org/dental.As an internationally recognized leader in caring for persons with Lesch-Nyhan Disease, a rare X-chromosome-linked recessive genetic disorder, Matheny frequently serves as a source of information and expertise for other facilities around the United States and internationally who are serving one or more individuals with LND.NeedsAssessment
Community InformationPart VI, Line 4: Community ServicesMathenys therapists, teachers, social workers, psychologists, nutritionists and nurses participate in three counties Special Child Health Services Early Intervention programs. We also provide New Jersey State Department of Education approved academically-based special education solutions for public and independent schools through a program called Matheny Therapy Solutions. However, in addition to the professional services we provide, we feel a responsibility to contribute our knowledge and expertise to the larger community. For example, our director of community services maintains membership in three community organizations: Healthier Somerset, an organization whose goal is to improve the health of the people who live and work in Somerset County. Presently, the focus is on obesity issues in the county. Somerset County Coalition for Children with Disabilities. This organization is dedicated to improving access to care and integration into the community. Child & Maternal Health Network, which is dedicated to improving access for women and their children to healthcare in the county. On the Matheny Therapy Solutions Facebook page, we not only promote our own services but seek to keep the disability community informed of other activities and opportunities, such as a recreation program for children with special needs at the Summit Community Center or a rhythm instrument workshop at Rutgers Cook Campus Center. When Matheny therapists and educators go into public school districts, they often provide services over and above what they are required to do. This is part of Mathenys culture, doing everything possible to improve the lives of people with disabilities and to educate others on how to care for and treat people with disabilities. For example, a physical therapist who works in the Roxbury Township Public Schools was hired to conduct eight 30-minute pt sessions a week. What happens, says Patricia Hovey, Roxbury director of special services, is that shell teach the teacher those skills that shes teaching individually, and that continues all day. So now its not just physical therapy once or twice a week; its physical therapy all the time. Its an important piece of what she does. Hovey describes the Matheny therapist as an advocate for the needs of her students and collaborative partner with our districts staff.A parent whose child received early intervention speech and occupational therapy through Mathenys Community Services program, points out that the Matheny professionals, took time out of their personal lives to help us. They were thinking about our family, not only when they were in our house, but after hours.International CommunitiesOur director of community services has traveled to Peru and will soon be traveling to Uganda to help schools for children with disabilities in those countries provide better care for their students, particularly in the areas of assistive technology and seating and mobility systems.Matheny recently hosted a group of special needs educators from South Korea. The group, accompanied by the Korean pastor of the Bernardsville Presbyterian Church, spent a full day touring Matheny and meeting with some of our professionals.Rehabilitation Technology/Seating & Mobility ClinicMathenys rehabilitation technicians are trained and certified in the skills necessary to evaluate and resolve clients seating needs by recommending and providing the appropriate equipment. In our seating & mobility clinic, therapists look to empower individuals, their families and caregivers with the information necessary to make informed decisions about assistive technology. The activities of these two interrelated programs sometimes spill out into the community in unconventional and uplifting ways. Two examples: Mathenys rehab technology department assisted in helping a Basking Ridge teenager raise money to fund a power wheelchair for someone who couldnt afford one. This was the Bar Mitzvah project of 13-year-old Callum Slater, who initially visited Matheny to interview rehab technicians about power wheelchairs and why they are so important to the people who need them. Then, after he raised nearly $8,000, Matheny was able to identify a recipient, as a result of our strong relationship with the Newark School District and the staff at the Belmont Runyon School, home to Newarks medically fragile students. The wheelchair was presented to a student who had become disabled as the result of a motor vehicle accident. The presentation was reported on by Channel 7 Eyewitness News, so the story reached out way beyond the Matheny and Newark communities. Also, during the fundraising process, two of Mathenys rehab technicians volunteered to shave off their beards to generate publicity for the project. They did this on a Sunday afternoon at a barber shop in Sussex County, and this also generated publicity in several area newspapers. Mathenys therapists and rehab technicians often go beyond the requirements of their job in order to secure the proper durable medical equipment for patients from the community. One such case involved a young adult, victim of an auto accident, whose power wheelchair had broken. After an original denial from the clients insurance company, Matheny followed up with the insurance company. According to the patients father, Matheny, did the paperwork and handled the appeals. They documented the necessity of the chair.Educating insurance companies and the medical community about the importance of the correct assistive technology and durable medical equipment for people with disabilities in the community is an ongoing mission at Matheny.CommunityInformation
Community Building ActivitiesPart VI, Line 5: Adapted Physical Education ProgramAs part of an effort to educate the general public about the challenges faced by people with disabilities, the Matheny School visits public and independent schools to demonstrate our adapted physical education program. The program extends the adapted phys ed classroom and allows Matheny students to explore a new gymnasium and independence. The students interact, challenge each other and share moments that last a lifetime. They often exchange emails and continue the relationship beyond the visit. Typical of the benefits enjoyed by the schools visited is this comment by Richard Katz, principal and superintendent of the Clinton Public School in Clinton, NJ: Its great to break down some barriers and let our kids appreciate their own lives and what they have. They get a better understanding and respect for what some of these other kids live with everyday. Its nice because its happening in a social way, too. Theyre talking to each other and doing things together. Thats even more powerful than I thought it was going to be. Another comment, from Lee Lagomarsino, phys ed teacher at the Cucinella Elementary School in Long Valley, NJ: This is a great experience for our kids. I think it helps them see the huge obstacles put in front of some of these other kids. Now, they know that every obstacle can be overcome.Additional Recreation Therapy Outreach ProgramsOur recreation therapy activities involve participation in adapted sports activities in the community such as baseball, ice skating and karate; a dining out program;and the Matheny prom. Integral to all of these activities is interaction with the community. It is not uncommon when we thank the parent of a visiting karate student or Boy Scout or Girl Scout, to receive this response: No, thank you! When my son/daughter first came here, he/she was very apprehensive. Now, he/she cant wait to get here. You have greatly broadened his/her horizons and outlook on life.Students from high schools in the community volunteer as dancing partners at the prom, an experience they typically say will last them a lifetime.Patient/Student PhilanthropyDespite their many physical challenges, Matheny patients and students are taught the importance of giving back to the community. Examples of this by Matheny adult patients include the following: Change a Life Uganda. This nondenominational nonprofit organization provides education for children through school-based programs. Matheny patients raised enough money to sponsor a child in this program for one year at a cost of $330. The money was earned through various patient activities. Salvation Army Angel Tree. The Angel Tree program provides a connection between those who can help and those who need help the most at Christmas. Matheny patients have sponsored an Angel Tree the past two years. Food Pantries. Matheny patients sponsored food pantries for the Salvation Army and Somerset County this past holiday season. Cookies for Firemen. Matheny patients made cookies during a class at the Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick, NJ, and dropped them off at the local fire station.Music TherapyMusic therapists use various types of music to positively impact Matheny students and patients cognitive, physical, emotional and social skills, helping them realize their potential in society. Activities and techniques include improvisation, rhythm, songwriting, songs, chants, instrumental activities, live and recorded music. Matheny students and patients have an opportunity to participate in one or more of four different choirs. In addition to performing in public concerts at Matheny, the Matheny Choir is often invited to perform in the community. These performances have ranged from the Peapack-Gladstone Tree Lighting Ceremony to an appearance before the New Jersey State Assembly at the Statehouse in Trenton.Admissions CounselingOur admissions director receives many contacts and requests from people whom we are unable to serve. We never simply disconnect from these people. We do everything possible to recommend alternate options for them, often contacting other organizations or social service agencies on their behalf. Our active networking with other organizations often results in referrals either by us to other institutions or by them to us.Volunteer ProgramMatheny has a large volunteer program consisting of adults in the community, school groups and students and corporations. Whenever these individuals or groups volunteer here on a regular basis, they are passionate about how they benefit emotionally and educationally from this experience. While their volunteering activities certainly benefit our patient and students, it is definitely a two-way street. TransportationFrom time to time, we are asked to transport citizens from the community in our vehicles. Sometimes, the request comes from a police department, following a serious traffic accident. On other occasions it might be a request to transport a local citizen with a serious illness or infirmity to his/her doctors appointments.Houses of WorshipMany of our patients and students attend religious services at local houses of worship. In addition to the opportunity this affords our clients, it is enriching to the community. It introduces people in the community to our patients and allows people in the community to get to know our patients as people with the same interests and desires as anyone else. It also promotes collaborations throughout the year on fundraising projects or other activitiesIndustry AssociationsMany Matheny staff members serve the community by being part of industry associations. For example, the director of marketing and public relations is on the Board of Directors of both the Healthcare Planning & Marketing Society of New Jersey and the New Jersey Advertising Club. He recently spent a day at the NJ Ad Clubs Career Expo talking to communications majors about the job market and reviewing their resumes.CommunityBuildingActivities
