The Prosperity Campaign is nationally recognized as a successful program that teaches individuals the basics of household budgeting and saving. Key components of the Prosperity Campaign are the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, Prosperity Centers, and the Individual Development Account (IDA) Program.Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program $229,415The VITA Program is an extremely successful program providing free income tax preparation services. This year, more than 9,700 households used this service which is available at 19 sites throughout the county. This year 204 volunteers who were trained and certified by the Internal Revenue Service, a key partner in the VITA Program, helped residents file their taxes and receive more than $16.2 million in refunds, including $6.2 million in Earned Income Tax Credits. By providing this service, local residents save $1 million each year in tax preparation fees.Individual Development Account (IDA) Program $148,536The IDA Program is a matched savings program designed to help individuals purchase a home or start a small business. Upon entering the program, the eligible participant must save $2,000 within six to 40 months. Upon completion of the program and after accumulating $2,000 in savings, the money is matched 2:1. To date, we have had 82 clients successfully participate in the program and are now homeowners. There are currently 112 individuals enrolled in the program.Palm Beach County Community Food Alliance $154,807The Community Food Alliance is a group of community organizations, led by United Way of Palm Beach County, that work together to implement a countywide strategic plan to end hunger and improve food security. Its members, from 100 different agencies - nonprofits, faith-based groups, and county government - work to integrate systems that address food and nutrition issues, including maximizing government self-sufficiency programs, and increasing access to quality, nutritious foods to low-income households. The Food Rescue Program is designed to collect and distribute leftover healthy nutritious food from restaurants, hotels, convention centers, country clubs and special events in Palm Beach County. In addition, packages of frozen meat from Publix supermarkets are also collected and distributed to agencies with kitchens serving those in need. The overall food recovery efforts include the distribution of fresh produce that has been gleaned or donated along with other non-perishable items as they become available. Last year, 594,961 pounds of fresh produce were donated, and 217,387 pounds of produce were gleaned by almost 1,720 volunteers and provided to 120 different agencies. There were also 43,731 pounds of food donated to the Food Rescue Program, and 304,462 pound of meat donated from Publix Supermarkets.CBS 12's Project Thanksgiving $81,877An annual fund-raising campaign that provides $10.00 Winn-Dixie food gift cards to thousands of individuals and families in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. Administrative support is provided by the Palm Beach County Community Food Alliance and United Way of Palm Beach County. Partners in this project are CBS 12, Winn-Dixie Foundation, the Palm Beach Kennel Club and Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Company.
