| Description | THE SFI PROGRAM'S GOALS ARE FOUNDED ON INTEGRITY, CONSERVATION, COMMUNITY AND MARKET OUTREACH, AND ITS SUCCESS RELIES ON THE INVOLVEMENT AND SUPPORT OF MORE THAN 2500 INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS. THE RESULT IS INCREASED ACCEPTANCE OF FOREST CERTIFICATION AND THE SFI PROGRAM AMONG STAKEHOLDERS AND THROUGHOUT THE SUPPLY CHAIN. THIS IS IMPORTANT AT A TIME WHEN LESS THAN 10 PERCENT OF THE WORLD'S FORESTS ARE CERTIFIED TO A CREDIBLE PROGRAM LIKE SFI THAT DELIVERS BENEFITS TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND TO THE ENVIRONMENT. OUR FOREST CERTIFICATION STANDARD IS BASED ON PRINCIPLES THAT PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT, INCLUDING MEASURES TO PROTECT WATER QUALITY, BIODIVERSITY, WILDLIFE HABITAT, SPECIES AT RISK, AND FORESTS WITH EXCEPTIONAL CONSERVATION VALUE. SOME OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2010 INCLUDE: "LAUNCHED NEW SFI 2010-2014 STANDARD AFTER A COMPREHENSIVE 18-MONTH PUBLIC REVIEW OF THE SFI 2010-2014 STANDARD COMPLETED IN 2009; THE PROCESS INVITED INPUT FROM MORE THAN 2,000 PEOPLE AND WAS OVERSEEN BY THE INDEPENDENT EXTERNAL REVIEW PANEL. REVISIONS INCLUDED IMPROVEMENTS TO REQUIREMENTS THAT ARE UNIQUE TO THE SFI PROGRAM SUCH AS LOGGER TRAINING, RESPONSIBLE FIBER SOURCING AND INVESTMENT IN RESEARCH. CONDUCTED THREE WEBINARS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC ON THE NEW STANDARD; "PUBLISHED 2010 PROGRESS REPORT HIGHLIGHTING THE "POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS"; "IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR SFI IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEES AND PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS, WE CONTINUED WORK WITH LOCAL HABITAT FOR HUMANITY CHAPTERS TO BUILD HOMES FOR HARD-WORKING, LOW-INCOME PEOPLE USING MATERIALS FROM SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES-INCLUDING HOMES IN THUNDER BAY AND OAKVILLE CANADA WITH TWO CONFIRMED FOR THE SPRING OF 2011, ONE IN FREDERICTON AND ONE IN THE GREATER VANCOUVER AREA. "A NETWORK OF 37 LOCAL SFI IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEES - WITH OVER 900 MEMBERS (ALMOST HALF OF WHOM ARE NOT SFI PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS)- CONTRIBUTED FUNDS TO SUPPORT LOCAL PROGRAMS SUCH AS EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR LOGGERS AND FORESTERS, AND OUTREACH TO FAMILY FOREST OWNERS; "SUPPORTED EFFORTS BY THE SOCIETY OF AMERICAN FORESTERS WHICH RESULTED IN 5,000 BOY SCOUTS ACHIEVING AN SAF PATCH AT THE 2010 NATIONAL SCOUT JAMBOREE; "OVER 183 MILLION ACRES (74 MILLION HECTARES) OF FORESTLAND ACROSS NORTH AMERICA WERE CERTIFIED TO THE SFI STANDARD AT THE END OF 2010 "CHAIN OF CUSTODY CERTIFICATIONS INCREASED TO A TOTAL OF ALMOST 1000 WITH OVER 2300 LOCATIONS INCLUDED; "SFI PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS INVESTED IN FOREST RESEARCH, RAISING THE TOTAL SINCE 1995 TO MORE THAN $1.1 BILLION; AND "RESPONSIBLE FIBER SOURCING: THE SFI PROGRAM'S FIBER SOURCING REQUIREMENTS CONTINUED TO IMPROVE CONSERVATION EFFORTS ON UNCERTIFIED LANDS IN NORTH AMERICA. IN ADDITION TO THE RAW MATERIAL COMING DIRECTLY FROM CERTIFIED FORESTS, THE REMAINING WOOD FIBER USED BY SFI PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS MET THE FIBER SOURCING REQUIREMENTS OF THE SFI STANDARD. RESPONSIBLE FIBER SOURCING PROMOTES, AMONG OTHER THINGS, CONSERVATION OF BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY AND FORESTS OF EXCEPTIONAL CONSERVATION VALUE, USE OF BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES TO PROTECT WATER QUALITY AND REFORESTATION ON FORESTLANDS THAT ARE NOT CERTIFIED. SFI AND OUR PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS ARE INVOLVED IN OR HAD RECENTLY COMPLETED NUMEROUS CONSERVATIVE-BASED PROJECTS AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES, MOST INVOLVING COLLABORATION WITH CONSERVATION ORGANIZATIONS, STATE OR PROVINCIAL AGENCIES, ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS, FAMILY FOREST OWNERS AND OTHER FOREST PRODUCT COMPANIES. CONSERVATION GROUPS INVOLVED IN THESE PARTNERSHIPS INCLUDED THE NATURE CONSERVANCY, SOCIETY OF AMERICAN FORESTERS, OPEN SPACE INSTITUTE, FOREST FOOTPRINT DISCLOSURE, DUCKS UNLIMITED CANADA, BIRD STUDIES CANADA, PARTNERS IN FLIGHT, THE LONGLEAF ALLIANCE AND THE RUFFED GROUSE SOCIETY. SFI INC. LAUNCHED A NEW CONSERVATION PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE BEGINNING IN 2010. THROUGH AN ONGOING CONSERVATION AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP GRANTS, SFI INC. SUPPORTED PROJECTS THAT WILL, AMONG OTHER THINGS, IMPROVE FOREST HABITAT AND WILDLIFE BIODIVERSITY, STRENGTHEN KNOWLEDGE AND DATA, AND REDUCE THE RISK OF ILLEGAL PRODUCTS IN THE GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN. OUR CRITERIA CALLED FOR PROJECTS THAT BRING TOGETHER PARTNERS AND RESOURCES SO WE WERE NOT SURPRISED TO FIND THAT OUR INITIAL COMMITMENT OF $675,000 -- $307,500 SO FAR IN 2010 ALONE - WILL LEVERAGE A TOTAL VALUE OF $2.7 MILLION FROM ALL OF THOSE INVOLVED.
