Mission DescriptionWe work to make this vision a reality in the San Francisco Bay Area by helping vulnerable children and families overcome some of life's toughest challenges - abuse, neglect, mental illness, and family crisis. Our mission is to strengthen children, youth, families, and their communities through service, training, advocacy, and research. Edgewood is part of the fabric of our community, offering innovative mental health, family support, and educational services that provide a safety net to more than 5,000 children and families in San Francisco and San Mateo Counties.MissionDescription

DescriptionResidential/Day Treatment/Medical Services - Level 14 residential program providing intensive therapy and rehabilitation for severely emotionally disturbed children ages 6-16. Children live in cottages on our SF campus and we work closely with their families and referring counties to return them to their homes and communities. A Hospital Diversion program is also provided that allows youth and families to receive intensive, short-term interventions without experiencing an inpatient care setting. Last year, 82% of the youth placed in our residential program were able to be discharged to a lower or same level of care, reducing the need for continued intensive services and improving permanency.Children arrive to our Vicente Campus, and as young as just 6 years old, have already experienced severe forms of trauma in their lives that, if gone untreated, can have lasting detrimental effects. Many of our children, particularly those that have been subject to physical and/or sexual abuse, greatly underestimate their talents and capacity for self-improvement. Many of them have been conditioned by long term abuse and neglect to disregard their dreams and aspirations. As a result of very low self-esteem, many of the children feel shame, anger, and apathy. These feelings can manifest in severe mood changes, reclusiveness, and/or aggression, which can sometimes result in self harm or violence towards others. While many residential programs for these at-risk children are closing their doors, our licensed Level 14 Residential Program (the highest-level treatment for a child outside of psychiatric hospitalization), is one of the very few facilities that maintains a full-time staff of psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, nurses, and pediatricians to respond to their medical and psychiatric needs. The Full Day Intensive includes individual and group behavioral health programming and works towards reintegrating youth back to their regular school setting. Our Day Treatment programming includes individual therapy, family therapy and skills training all designed to help youth improve their functioning. With this level of intensive programming, only 30% of youth need to continue to a higher level of care.Description

DescriptionNon-Public School - On our quiet, tree-lined campus, children, ages 6-18, live, learn, and play in a safe, structured, therapeutic environment and receive individualized care and treatment. During the day, the special education teachers at our Non-Public School/Day Treatment create and implement individualized learning plans based on students' specific needs. The great majority of students attending school here at Edgewood achieve grade level advancement while enrolled in the Day Treatment Program. During the afternoon, Edgewood ARTS (Arts and Recreation Therapeutic Services), a state of the art after school program for children with special needs, offers classes and activities in fine arts and crafts, music, drama, physical education, and dance to encourage creativity and self-expression.Description

DescriptionCommunity-Based Programming - Edgewood offers preventive and outpatient services to youth and families in both San Francisco and San Mateo Counties. Through a series of local and national grants and private donors, we provide consultation services in a variety of settings, direct outpatient services and wrap around services. The goal of our community services is to promote health and permanence in the families we serve. This year, we will also be working to provide consultation and training to agencies in San Francisco who serve youth at risk of involvement in the Juvenile Justice system. In both San Francisco and San Mateo Counties, we provide various Community Mental Health Services including mandated and voluntary out-patient mental health services, case management, and referrals, aimed at limiting the effect of trauma, reinforcing family stability, and developing healthy living skills. A critical component to ensuring that all of the needs of our families are met are our Community Health Programs that help our kinship families navigate the healthcare system and provide non-judgmental and respectful health and wellness services including nursing case management, health workshops, nutrition and exercise workshops, and disaster planning. As an alternative to residential treatment, Edgewood Wraparound Services offers a family-focused approach and coordinates various services (e.g. mental health services, housing stability, etc.) that "wraparound" the child and ensure a safe and healthy environment for them - with their own family, in their own home. Over the years, we have found that approximately 10-20% of children in a classroom struggle with behavioral issues. In a class of 30 children, that's three to six children who may display defiant, aggressive, even violent behaviors. Although teachers are generally able to recognize behaviorally challenging children, most teacher credential programs do not adequately address classroom behavior management skills. As a result, teachers typically react to disruptive students by scolding them, disciplining them, and relying on these techniques to discourage other outbursts. Unfortunately, studies have shown that scolding and traditional disciplining for these students in the classroom do not work. To improve the climate and achievement of schools throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, Edgewood School-Based Well-Being works with high-needs schools to build capacity - the capacity of teachers to handle behavioral issues as they arise, the capacity of families to provide the support their children need to succeed, and the capacity of children to deal with issues that may be impeding their academic and social progress.Description

DescriptionKinship - This program supports Kin givers who are taking care of family members. This program keeps families together and children out of the foster care with a success rate of 99%. Outcome data also shows that Kinship care providers in the program had improved levels of perceived support and greater access to critical services. Edgewood Kinship services also provided technical support for Kin programs throughout the state and will now be offering additional case management services through the Family Navigator grant program.Compared to nearly 1 in 12 children nationwide, one in six children in San Francisco and San Mateo county are being raised by a grandparent or other relative. While the safe home of a caring relative offers kinship children a second chance at a healthy life, physical and emotional disabilities can greatly affect youth self-esteem and motivation to succeed. The behaviors, emotions, and health of kinship youth remain significantly below national norms (and similar to that of foster children). We believe that children do best in their own home environment, supported by their families and their communities; our Kinship Support Network promotes family stability by keeping families together, encouraging self sufficiency, and enhancing family integrity, individual values, and cultural and ethnic diversity. Our Institute for Research has documented outstanding outcomes for family stability: Children in Edgewood's Kinship Youth Services program are 10 times more likely to remain in their kinship home (a sign of family stability and safety) than similar children served only by the child welfare system. Ninety-six percent (96%) of the children and youth enrolled in our Kinship Support Network are able to avoid entering the foster care system.Since 1993, Edgewood's Kinship Support Network was the country's first comprehensive public-private partnership to serve kin families, and has grown into the national model for kinship services. Edgewood also played a key role in the development and passing of AB1193, which created the Kinship Supportive Services Program in California in 1997. We are proud to have served as a local and national leader in developing replicable kinship programs, and are currently the sole provider of technical assistance to all of California's Kinship Support Services sites. Edgewood has the depth of experience and expertise necessary to raise visibility of the need to support kinship caregivers.Description

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11The 990 is reviewed first by the audit committee in late January and then presented and discussed at a full board meeting so that members can vote on its approval prior to the 2/15/11 deadline of the first extension. Some members will be voting via email using our secured server.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cThe members are asked to complete a disclosure form once a year and instructed to disclose of any changes during their tenure as a board member prior to the following year's new disclosure form.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15In May and June of 2009, the Chair of the Board Operations Committee and Edgewood's Director of Human Resources conducted a study of Executive/Key Employees Compensation. The positions that were reviewed were: - Chief Executive Officer - Chief Operations Officer/Chief Financial Officer - Director of Programs and Strategy - Chief Advancement Officer - Chief Medical Officer These positions are collectively known as the Executive Team. Agencies 990s that were reviewed in relation to compensation for Edgewood's Chief Executive Officer included: - Seneca Center - Eastfield Ming Quong - Lincoln Child Center - Catholic Charities CYO - Jewish Child and Family Services The Agencies that were reviewed in relation to compensation and benefits for Edgewood's Executive Team included: - Sunny Hills Services - Fred Finch Youth Center - Lincoln - Stars Behavioral Health Group - Aspiranet - Hanna Boys Center External (third-party) Salary Surveys that were reviewed in relation to compensation and benefits for Edgewood's Executive Team included: - Management Center - Non-Profit Times Conclusion: On average, Edgewood's Executive Team placed in the 75th percentile of the organizations surveyed. Note: Edgewood's blend of programs, size, geographic region and scope of work differ enough from the agencies surveyed to make one-to-one comparisons imprecise. However, given the types of agencies available for comparison, we believe the compensation and benefits survey was comprehensive. In the coming year, it may be advisable to review agencies in other geographic regions.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19Cheryle Matteo, Controller, posts the audited financial statements on the organization's shared public drive and Maria Nava, the Executive Assistant, provides the other documents. Whenever the organization receive an inquiry from the public (via reception or any other type), Maria directs them to the organization's public network drive.
