| Mission Description | Horizons National Student Enrichment Program Inc (HN) is the central organization for an award-winning network of six-week summer academic enrichment programs. Since 1964, Horizons has served low-income, public-school, K-8 students, supported by school-year components. HN supports affiliates through centralized support services such as evaluation, communication, marketing, PR,and consulting services; planning and funding for affiliate program initiatives; other discretionary grants and expansion. | MissionDescription |

| Description | Initiative and Discretionary Grants. The Literacy Initiative, begun in the summer of 2009,paid for each Horizon reading specialist and trained them to implement assessments, analyze data, work with faculty to structure curriculum and lesson plans, and provide individualized instruction. This initiative yielded improved student outcomes in reading (gains of three months) and increased the program consistency among all Horizons affiliates. HN began a STEM initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in the summer of 2010. All Horizons affiliates received STEM funding for the summer of 2011 for planning, project, supplies, and a pre/post student assessment of math skills.HN also maintains a discretionary fund available to affiliates by application for local initiatives and temporary bridge funding. | Description |
