Mission DescriptionGeorgian Court University offers students an innovative liberal arts curriculum that broadly covers the arts and sciences, and delivers highly specialized training to help students thrive in their careers. GCU students are engaged in scholarship, service, leadership, and personal development, and graduate to become competent professionals, compassionate leaders, and engaged citizens committed to servant leadership. Most recent data show that GCU students last year invested more than 13,945 hours in volunteer work as they helped Gulf Coast families still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Katrina; advocated for immigration reform and anti-poverty campaigns; and worked with poor women in Peru to promote microeconomics, holistic health, and early childhood education. Nearly 90 GCU classes incorporate service learning as an academic component, regularly connecting students and faculty with more than 15 agencies and 70 organizations. DescriptionGeorgian Court serves 1,969 undergraduates in 31 majors and 916 graduate students in 10 distinctive programs. GCU's Women's College and University College offer courses through the School of Arts and Humanities; the School of Sciences and Mathematics; the School of Education; and the School of Business. Women's College: The Women's College at GCU in Lakewood is dedicated to the success of women, both personally and professionally. Open to both residential and commuter students, the college provides a values-based liberal arts education that makes Women's College students extremely marketable in multidisciplinary fields. The emphasis is on building strong women leaders who excel in their careers; contribute to the greater good of their communities, state, and nation; and can approach any obstacle with confidence. Studies show that students at women's colleges like GCU develop high self-esteem, are better prepared for their first job, and are mentored for leadership roles. University College: University College encompasses the coeducational, nonresidential undergraduate, graduate, and certificate offerings at GCU. University College at Georgian Court University helps adult learners-students who have family obligations, hectic employment schedules, and limited time to attend class-achieve their educational and career goals. University College offers flexible scheduling, technology-enhanced courses, and convenient locations throughout the state, all while upholding the high caliber of education that is expected of GCU. Evening, weekend, online, and accelerated classes, as well as a variety of convenient locations, are all part of the University College advantage. Programs are offered starting in the early evening at the GCU main campus in Lakewood, and during the day and evening at GCU at Woodbridge, and GCU at the New Jersey Coastal Communiversity in Wall. GCU has added several new areas of study in recent years, keeping pace with market demands for talented professionals in nursing, homeland security, holistic health, wellness and exercise science, dance, and psychiatric rehabilitation and psychology. Georgian Court continues to develop unique faculty-student research opportunities in areas such as biochemistry; neurobiology; autism studies; early childhood education; learning disabilities teacher consulting; social work; environmental education; criminal justice; community counseling; and school psychology. At least 69% of first-year students at least occasionally spend time with faculty members on activities other than course work, and by their senior year, one in five students has conducted research with a professor. Beyond the classroom, students also participate in field experiences, and by graduation, 64 percent have completed a practicum, internship, co-op, or clinical assignment. Georgian Court is also meeting the need for educational enrichment programming for senior adults seeking intellectual challenge and academic involvement on a college campus. The university's new McAuley Institute for Lifelong Learning offers nearly 20 courses of five to seven weeks, covering topics from history and politics to Renaissance art and modern literature. The institute has attracted upward of 313 members since October 2009. Scholarships and Grants: 96% of full-time freshmen receive aid, and 93% of all students receive aid. The average institutional grant was $9,122 for all full-time students.Description

DescriptionStudent Athletic & Academic Programs: Georgian Court participates in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, NCAA Division II athletics, fielding 126 athletes in eight sports, including basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball. The GCU Athletics program is distinguished by its commitment to building well-rounded student-athletes. Studies show that women who participate in competitive sports reap rewards that enhance all aspects of their lives. In a nationwide survey, 80% of women identified as key leaders in Fortune 500 companies participated in sports. GCU student-athletes are living proof of this-they maintain high grade point averages, participate regularly in community service projects, and take on leadership roles throughout the university. Our coaching staff is dedicated to helping our student-athletes achieve on the field and in life. GCU student athletes, including those on the university's championship softball, soccer and lacrosse teams, maintain an average GPA of 3.13. In recent years, they have worked with the Tournament of Champions to provide basketball and soccer instruction to physically challenged individuals; raised $2,500 for hunger relief efforts; promoted breast cancer awareness; conducted homeless outreach; and collected used athletic shoes for a program that turns recycled shoe rubber into turf fields, basketball courts and playgrounds for underserved neighborhoods.Description

IdentifierIdentifierReturn ReferenceReturnReferenceExplanationExplanation
ENDOWMENT FUNDSFORM 990, SCHEDULE D, PART V, LINE 4The University has adopted an investment policy that is intended to provide a predictable stream of funding to programs from its endowment while seeking to maintain the purchasing power of the endowment assets. Endowment assets include those assets of donor-restricted funds that the University must hold in perpetuity as well as board-designated funds. 1. Donor-restricted endowment funds are established by donor-restricted gifts and recorded as permanently restricted within the University financial statements. The amount of each individual fund is comprised of the original gift, subsequent gifts if they were to be added to the permanent endowment and accumulations if directed by the donor's gift documents. These funds must be retained in accordance with the explicit donor stipulations. 2. Earnings on these endowed funds are regarded as "net appreciation" and classified as temporarily restricted net assets. These amounts are appropriated for expenditure consistent with the donor guidelines. Donor funded scholarships are awarded annually, in accordance with donor stipulated guidelines and are a component of the University's financial aid budget. 3. Board designated funds, quasi-endowment, functioning as endowments are made up of a debt fund, intended to offset future debt borrowings; a plant fund, intended to supplement operational expenses related to facilities' needs such as deferred maintenance or capital items; and a special projects fund with the ability to react to the changing needs and demands of the higher education environment.
INCOME TAXESFORM 990, SCHEDULE D, PART X, LINE 2The University follows appropriate guidance which prescribes a model for the recognition and measurement of a tax position taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, and provides guidance on recognition, classification, interest and penalties, disclosure and transition. At June 30, 2010 and 2009, the University does not believe its financial statements include any material uncertain tax positions.

FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION A, LINE 7In April 2006, the Sisters of Mercy of the Regional Community of New Jersey transferred the sponsorship of Georgian Court to the Conference for Mercy Higher Education ("CMHE"). CMHE coordinates collaboration among the 16 Mercy colleges and universities throughout the country on behalf of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Georgian Court University has a two-tiered governance structure, the first tier consisting of CMHE (as the University's sole member) and the second being the duly elected Board of Trustees, which includes the President of the University as an ex-officio member. Control of the University and its affairs and property is vested in the Board of Trustees pursuant to the University's By-Laws, subject to the powers reserved to CMHE, including among others, the power to establish the philosophy and mission of the University, elect or remove with or without cause the University president and members of the Board of Trustees, approve expenditures that are in excess of a level requiring approval of the Holy See and merge, consolidate, dissolve, or change the corporate structure of the University. Except to the extent reserved to CMHE, the Board of Trustees is empowered to manage the property and business of the University, including within such authority, the power to delegate such responsibilities and duties to the officers of Georgian Court University as the Board of Trustees deems appropriate.
FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION A, LINE 10The University's Form 990 was prepared by an international public accounting firm in conjunction with the University's financial department. A draft is prepared and distributed to the full audit committee for review. The audit committee recommends and approves for release the 990. The 990 is distributed to the full board.
FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 12Each officer, director, trustee and key employee of the University is required to annually disclose any conflicts of interest that arise by virtue of their employment, board service, or position with the University. The University monitors compliance with its conflict of interest policy through a conflict of interest statement that is completed by each board member at the annual June meeting. These are reviewed by the Executive Committee of the Board. In addition to the above parties, Finance staff, as well as anyone with purchasing responsibilities within the University, complete the questionnaire annually and are reviewed by the Vice President for Mission & Business Affairs and Director of Human Resources. FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 15The University undertakes a thorough process to ensure that the executive compensation it pays to its top management official and all of its officers and key employees of organization is reasonable given the market in which the University operates. CEO Compensation: The Executive Committee of the Board, reviews the compensation package of the President annually at its June meeting. Compensation level is decided upon utilizing comparative data received from the Human Resource Department. Officer positions are assigned a salary range established by a compensation study done by an outside firm and the Executive Committee of the Board also reviews the compensation for these employees who are considered highest-paid employees. The officers reside on the President's Administrative Team, categorized as the executive level of the University.
FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION C, LINE 19Governing documents and financial statements are available upon request. Financial statements are listed with bond reporting agencies. Form 990 is provided to the public upon request.
FORM 990, SCHEDULE J-2Eduardo Paderon is a former officer of the University. In the year ending June 30, 2010, Mr. Paderon received compensation for services rendered as an adjunct professor. President, Sister Rosemary Jeffries; Special Assistant to the President, Sister Mary Ellen Fuhrman; and VP for Mission and Business Affairs, Sister Suzanne Elliot, are represented on Schedule J-2, Part I as having received no compensation from the University because the Order they represent receives all compensation they would both otherwise be paid. The Sisters of Mercy fulfill various roles within the University. Some positions, which would otherwise be filled with lay persons, are assigned a value for compensation and payments for these services are made to the Sisters of Mercy. The payments made for the calendar year 2009 totaled $1,119,764 and the compensation for these two positions is included in this figure. This compensation is not treated as taxable income to the Sisters since they are members of a religious Order and, therefore, Sister Rosemary Jeffries, is still deemed to be an independent board member for purposes of Part VI of the Form 990.
