DescriptionExhibitions and Collections - See Schedule OExhibitions and Collections:Over the past year, the Museum hosted world-class exhibitions and collections, beginning with Embrace!, a DAM-organized exhibition of installed works by 17 international contemporary artists. Each of the artists selected locations within the Museum's Hamilton Building, and created an artwork that responded to or otherwise "embraced" the space. The exhibition celebrated the unique architecture and the way art interacts with the building in those spaces. A suite of western American painting exhibitions began with Allen True's West, examining True's work as Colorado's premier native-born artist of the early 20th century. Charles M. Russell: Masterworks in Oil and Bronze brought together signature paintings and sculptures from all phases of the renowned artist's career. The exhibition Charles Deas and 1840s America highlighted twelve of the artist's most important paintings, many of which were seen together for the first time. These exhibitions highlighted the Museum's own expansive collections and provided visitors with a rich exploration of 19th-century American art of the west. In the modern and contemporary works on paper gallery, examples of portraiture from the sixteenth century to the present were on display in Face to Face. This exhibition explored the many ways artists approach portraiture. In April, the Museum debuted the new permanent photography gallery with an exhibition of highlights from the collection. The inaugural exhibition provided a first-ever glimpse of the breadth and quality of photography at the Museum. In July, the Museum opened Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs, a major touring exhibition showcasing over 100 pieces from the tomb of King Tut and other ancient sites representing 2,000 years of Egyptian history. The exhibition follows a storyline that explores the splendor of the pharaohs, their function in the earthly and divine worlds, and what "kingship" meant to the Egyptian people. Visitors viewed artifacts from some of the most powerful Egyptian rulers, including Khefren, whose great pyramid is the only remaining structure of the seven wonders of the ancient world and Psusennes I, whose magnificent golden death mask was included in the display. Museum hours were extended to accommodate the large number of visitors.Description

DescriptionEducation Programs - See Schedule OEducation Programs: The Museum is committed to making art meaningful and enjoyable to people of all ages and backgrounds through its programs, exhibitions and installed galleries. The Museum's education department is a pioneer in the field of museum education, and is well-regarded internationally for its innovative approach to program development. Programs include: In-Gallery Installations: The Museum's in-gallery interpretive installations provide visitors with a variety of ways to explore temporary exhibitions and permanent collections on their own. Discovery libraries, Hot Spot in-gallery activity stations, gallery games for kids and families, browsing areas, and more deepen visitors' experiences with art. Family Programs: The Denver Art Museum is committed to being a truly family-friendly institution. The Museum's approach is two-pronged: 1) offer programs and activities at "peak family times" (weekends and school breaks); and 2) integrate family materials into installations, exhibitions, and public spaces so there is always something for families to do together. Family activities are always available and included with the cost of general admission. Adult Programs: Adult programs include tours, studio classes, courses, and workshops. Online programs complement existing onsite offerings and incorporate participatory creative experiences that attract and engage younger adults for whom participation and technology are extremely important. School and Teacher Programs: The hallmark of the Museum's school program is an interactive touring approach that incorporates object-oriented learning and art-making activities. Roughly 40,000 students visit the museum each year, and over 4,000 participate with art-making tours. The Denver Art Museum also offers Creativity Resource, a web site that provides teachers with free standards-based resources for bringing creativity and cultural literacy into their classrooms. Community Partnerships: The Denver Art Museum has focused community outreach efforts to break down barriers to family participation such as a lack of transportation, or lack of awareness of the Museum's family programs. Programs include Community Access Tours that familiarize new visitors with Museum offerings, and visits to community organizations to provide art activities, family passes, and information about the Museum. By focusing on outreach, the Museum is strengthening ties to the community and welcoming ethnically and economically diverse family audiences. Overall, education programs both onsite and online served more than 300,000 people in 2010.Description

Part III, Line 1a:The Museum's collections, which were acquired through purchases and contributions, are not recognized as assets on the Statement of Financial Position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired. Contributed collection items are not reflected on the financial statements. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes. Museum policies require that such proceeds be used only to acquire additional art objects. All of the Museum's collection items are held for educational, research, scientific, and curatorial purposes. Each of these collection items is cataloged, preserved, and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously.
Part III, Line 4:The Denver Art Museum is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and presentation of art for broadly diverse audiences. With approximately 70,000 works of art in its care, the Museum holds the largest and most comprehensive collection of world art between Kansas City and the West. The Museum is an accessible, quality destination, welcoming over 500,000 visitors annually. The Museum is committed to its role as a cultural resource providing shared experiences of art and culture to the Rocky Mountain region and beyond. Collections are organized into nine curatorial departments: architecture, design & graphics; Asian art; modern and contemporary art; native arts; new world; painting and sculpture; textile arts; western American art; and photography. The American Indian collection is the single largest group of works in the Museum, containing more than 19,000 objects representing more than 100 tribes ranging in date from prehistoric times to the present day and assembled with dual concerns for aesthetic and historical significance. The Denver Art Museum was one of the first fine art museums in the United States to collect American Indian art. The Denver Art Museum is also the only museum in the country with major collections of both pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial art. The pre-Columbian collection boasts world-class holdings of Peruvian art and encompasses the largest holdings of Costa Rican art outside of that country. The Spanish colonial collection, rich in paintings, sculptures and decorative arts, is widely considered one of the finest Latin American collections in the United States. This collection of over 1,300 objects is especially strong in Mexican and Peruvian painting as well as colonial silver and furniture from all areas of Latin America. The Denver Art Museum strives to enrich the lives of present and future generations through the acquisition, presentation and preservation of works of art. The collections further the organization's exempt purpose by providing the sustenance necessary to educate visitors about the past, present and future, and inspire life-long learning.

General Explanation GeneralExplanation (7 entries)

IdentifierIdentifierExplanationExplanation
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6The Denver Art Museum has over 26,000 members who approve the slate of directors nominated by the Board of Trustees at the annual general membership meeting.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7aDenver Art Museum members approve the slate of directors as nominated by the Board of Trustees.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11The IRS Form 990 is completed annually and a copy is provided to the Museum's Board Secretary for review. The Secretary provides the Form 990 to the Museum Board's Audit Committee Chair for review. The Museum's CFO discusses any questions or concerns with the Secretary and the Audit Committee Chair and necessary changes are updated on the Form 990. Once the CFO is in agreement with the Secretary and the Audit Committee Chair regarding the finished Form 990, it is signed and dated by the CFO and submitted to the IRS by the filing deadline. A copy is made available to all Museum Board Trustees prior to filing with the IRS.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cThe Museum's Conflict of Interest Policy is designed to protect the Museum by defining what is a conflict of interest or potential conflict of interest and providing procedures to identify and address conflicts of interest and potential conflicts of interest. Museum trustees, members of committees with delegated powers from the Board of Trustees, officers (Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer), and specific employees including the Museum Director, President, Executive Assistant to Director, Assistant Director / Chief of Staff, Deputy Director - Operations, Deputy Director - Finance & CFO, Chief Curator, Curator, Assistant or Associate Curator, Department Director, or Department Associate Director (all "Interested Persons") are all covered under the policy. On an annual basis, each Interested Person must complete a "Disclosure and Compliance" form. This form requests information concerning all actual or potential conflicts of interest involving Interested Persons, their immediate family members and certain entities in which they or their immediate family members have an interest. As new trustees join the Board, new committee members are appointed, new officers are elected, or new employees who are covered under the policy are appointed (if those individuals are not already Interested Persons by reason of holding another of these positions) such individuals are also required to complete the "Disclosure and Compliance" form. In case of an actual or potential conflict of interest, the Museum uses a process at the Executive Committee level to investigate actual or potential conflicts of interest. Following disclosure of an actual or potential conflict, the person or persons involved with the conflict are not permitted to participate in any discussions relevant to determining if a conflict of interest exists. They may, however, be counted in determining the presence of a quorum at a meeting of the Executive Committee at which a conflict is being reviewed and may make a presentation to the Executive Committee to disclose the conflict and answer questions relevant thereto, but must leave the meeting during the discussion of and vote on whether the transaction or arrangement at issue resulted in a conflict of interest. If a conflict does exist, the Policy dictates ensuing steps, including investigating alternatives to the proposed transaction or arrangement and appropriate disciplinary and corrective action. The Museum maintains records concerning investigations of actual and potential conflicts of interest.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15The Museum's procedures for determining executive compensation include reviewing comparability data, monitoring the competitive market place, and approval by the executive comittee of the Board of Trustees. Determining the compensation for the Museum's other officers and key employees follows the Museum's compensation policies and practices. This includes reviewing comparability data, considering the competitive market place, and the review and approval by the Museum's executive management.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19The Museum makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon reasonable request.
Part XI, Line 2cThis process has not changed from the prior year.
