DescriptionWomen's Global Leadership Network Businesswomen's Network (BWN): The economic development portfolio consists of two major work-streams: Small and Medium Enterprise (SME)development and the BWN. The BWN is the premier channel for partnering and delivering valuable economic opportunities and programs to businesswomen at scale. Currently the BWN operates in three regions: Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and Middle East and North Africa (MENA), working to achieve broad-based social and economic benefits for society and a more enabling environment for women's economic engagement. The three BWNs include 19 member countries and 10,000 women members. The MENA BWN has hub associations representing 2,500 members in ten countries, whose leaders share a vision for women's economic empowerment in the MENA region. As a Network, they represent a unified voice for women committed to social progress through economic development by embracing the "pay it forward" model of leadership by giving back to their communities, youth, and other women. During 2011, the MENA BWN implemented a total of 78 activities and nine direct grants across 10 participating countries and reaching over 6,100 individuals. In 2011, Africa BWN programs benefited nearly 4,600 women and men. The Africa BWN has six hub associations: Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda. Supported by Vital Voices, these hubs held 37 programs to create enabling environments for women in business and raise awareness of economic issues facing women. In June 2011, the LAC BWN was launched, with Vital Voices' work expanding into an additional three countries in Argentina, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. La Pietra Coalition: The La Pietra Coalition is an innovative, membership-based alliance of leaders from government, corporations, non-governmental organizations, the media, academia, foundations, and civil society which share the belief that addressing the quality of life and role of women in society is critical not only to their businesses, but to our global economy. Serving as advocates and partners to our 100+ members, we are uniting organizations that might not ordinarily work together under a common goal, and highlighting models that have achieved real success in the past.Description

DescriptionLeadership TrainingPeace and Prosperity Initiative: An international team of peace builders working with Israeli Arab and Jewish peers to overcome entrenched social division through cross-cultural dialogue and best practice exchange.Fortune/State Mentoring Program: Vital Voices, through the support and collaboration of U.S. Department of State and in partnership with the FORTUNE Most Powerful Women's Summit, gathered 33 emerging leaders from across the globe to come to the United States for a month long mentorship with top American businesswomen as well as intensive leadership and communications training in Washington, DC and New York City. Vital Voices prepared mentors and mentees for their experiences, provided guidance and served as a resource for successful mentoring models, developed and facilitated both the leadership trainings and meetings with American women leaders in Washington as well as the debrief and communications/media training in New York. Vital Voices also maintains the alumnae network through communication, resources, further participation in Vital Voices programs and connects them with other leaders in the Vital Voices Network. Vital Voices has helped 2010 alumnae by assisting them in organizing their own mentoring programs, provided them with grant opportunities and further trained several of them through regional programs.Entrepreneurs in Handcrafts: Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) development programming includes the Entrepreneurs in Handcrafts (EinH) program, which provides capacity-building support to women SME owners in the handcraft sector. Since the program's inception, Vital Voices and its partners have trained and supported approximately 200 high-potential entrepreneurs from 37 countries, with the typical participant employing an average of 32 workers, who in turn, impact another 101 indirect beneficiaries. In addition, the EinH program has conducted two training-of-trainer workshops, the first in Tunisia in 2010, and the second in Uganda in 2011, training a total of 34 participants.Description

DescriptionHuman Rights and Anti-TraffickingIn 2011, human rights programming directly reached 632 women and men in trainings to combat violence against women and girls. Since late 2010, Vital Voices programs have reached over 600 women and men leaders engaged in efforts to combat violence against women and girls. Vital Voices successfully expanded its human rights portfolio over the course of the past 18 months in two key ways: by establishing a new donor relationship with the U.S. government; and significantly increasing program activities, nearly doubling the number of impacted women and men leaders combating violence against women in just the first six months of 2011 compared to the number trained throughout all of 2010.In partnership with Arizona State University and the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, Vital Voices launched the first mentoring and leadership program for ten outstanding international leaders in our Global Partnership to End Violence Against Women (GPEVAW), a partnership that was launched in 2010 in collaboration with the U.S. State Department and Avon Foundation. In addition to celebrating the success of the 2010 GPEVAW grants to Vital Voices' partners in India and Argentina, Vital Voices awarded eleven new grants to members of 11 different GPEVAW country delegations to undertake projects ranging from awareness raising to research to law enforcement training to improving services in the areas of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking. On the regional level, Vital Voices developed and implemented working sessions in Argentina and South Africa, piloted a program on NGO sustainability in Cambodia, and added human rights content to the launch of the Latin America and Caribbean Businesswomen's Network. The past year's activities also included the implementation of the Cameroon Initiative to Combat Human Trafficking, a grant-supported project with the U.S. State Department's Office to Combat and Monitor Trafficking in Person's, as well as Vital Voices' efforts surrounding the renewal of the U.S.'s Trafficking Victims Protection Act.Description

General Explanation GeneralExplanation (4 entries)

Return ReferenceReturnReferenceExplanationExplanation
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11The federal Form 990 is prepared by Vital Voices' external Tax Accountants. The external Accountants send the completed draft federal Form 990 to Vital Voices' Finance and Executive personnel. The Vice President of Finance and Administration, the CEO & President, and the Chief Operating Officer review the Form 990 for accuracy. Then, the federal Form 990 is disseminated to the Finance and Audit Committees. Once the Finance Committee reviews and provides any comments or edits, the federal Form 990 is disseminated to the full Board of Directors to provide any comments prior to filing with the Internal Revenue Service.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cBoard members file a conflict of interest statement on an annual basis, which is filed with the Chair of the Board indicating whether there are any potential conflicts of interest that might be expected to occur within the following year. Any such potential conflicts will be reported to the Executive Committee of the Board. The Executive Committee shall decide whether the Board member with such potential conflict of interest shall be required either to divest such interest or to resign from the Board. All employees sign an Employment Manual and Policies Acknowledgement Form, which includes agreeing to abide by the organization's employee Conflict of Interest Policy.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15A salary survey of independent sources was conducted by the Finance and Administration staff. Sources used were Charity Navigator, Monster, federal Form 990's of other comparable public charities, other salary surveys, etc. The results were compiled and reviewed by the CEO & President, the Board Chair, the Board Vice-Chair, and Chair of the Finance Committee. This compensation analysis is performed every 3 to 4 years. Using this data as a guide, the Board determines the compensation of the CEO & President and Key Employees upon hire and as part of the fiscal year budget process.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19Vital Voices makes its federal Form 990 and its audited financial statements available on its website. It also makes its governing documents and conflict of interest policy available upon request.
