| Description | Program Service-2011In calendar year 2011 GiveLight continued its operations in eight countries supporting more than 800 orphans with details as follow:1. Aceh, Indonesia A. We continue our work of supporting orphans who are living in the orphanage in Takengon, Indonesia. Our oldest child, Nur Samawi has graduated from College in December this year with a Bachelors Degree in Economics. She is now working for a non Profit organization in West Java and still plan to apply for a scholarship to pursue a master's degree.Five orphans have graduated from High School and are now in College (2 in Jakarta and 3 in Aceh). We are supporting 40 orphans living in the orphanage. Most of the kids are highly motivated and have a deep love of learning. There were four volunteers from the US who went and taught at the orphanage in 2011: Neil Dsouza, Taj Noor, Qamar Noori and Sabeen Shaiq . They were pleasantly surprised to see how eager the kids were to learn new skills, especially English. Because of their motivation and the dedication of our volunteers, the kids are making significant improvement in English, Computer skills and they event learned how to blog.B. Supporting orphans in Banda Aceh, IndonesiaWe continue to sponsor orphans who are living with poor relatives as well as those who live in another orphanage called Babun Najah, in the village of Banda Aceh. The kids are doing well in school and are eager to learn and become good citizens. Our staff monitored their progress by paying regular visits to ensure the kids are cared for and came back with positive experiences.2. Rawalpindi, PakistanA. The orphanage in Rawalpindi is now home to 40 orphaned girls. After 2 years of operation we decided to send the kids to public schools instead of schooling them internally. This gives them the opportunity to interact with other children and not feel isolated. The girls are doing well academically and they are learning a lot of fun things such as growing their own organic garden and farm. One of the founders is living with his family next to the orphanage and the children are attached to him and his wife and they are seen as the caring grandparents.B. We continue to sponsor 160 orphans who are living with poor relatives/single moms in earthquake affected areas of Pakistan and Kashmir through partnership with Helping Hands. 3. BangladeshWe continue to sponsor one meal a day for 300 orphans in Bangladesh. These children were only having two meals prior to getting help from GiveLight. We also built 10 new bathrooms for them as they had suffered for years in sharing only three bathrooms for the entire orphanage.4. AfghanistanSince March of 2010 we have increased our sponsorship to 17 orphans in Kabul through partnership with Omeid International. They currently live in a rented house because we don't feel it is secure to build a permanent home yet due to volatile political climate in Afghanistan. Our goal is to start small, save a few lives and learn our way to hopefully help more children every year. Once we secure a donated land, our long term goal is to build a home for 50 orphans in Kabul. 5. HaitiThe earthquake on January 12th 2010 left thousands of children orphaned. GiveLight decided to raise funds for immediate relief and was able to partner with UNICEF to get the much needed funds to feed and shelter children. Since February 2010, we have been sponsoring 60 orphans in Haiti through partnership with Zakat Foundation. 6. SomaliaWe began sponsoring 100 orphans in Somalia through a partnership with Red Horn Africa in November of 2010. Through this sponsorship, those kids are fed, clothed and able to get education. We also sent them special gifts from school in Santa Clara, which allowed them to have a feast celebration. We plan to continue this work in Somalia and expand to different countries in Africa. 7. San Francisco Bay Area, California, United StatesWe continue to provide scholarship for 10 orphans living in the San Francisco Bay Area. These children go to Silicon Valley Academy and are doing much better academically compared to when they went to public schools. We also provide each one of them with a mentor to ensure they have one on one attention.FUTURE GOALS:1.Completion of our orphanages on Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.2.Expand sponsorship to more countries where there are many orphans and we have identified trustworthy partners/volunteers: Pacific Islands of Samoa and Morocco 3.Provide new shoes for 1000 orphans globally. As in the past 7 years, our volunteers remain motivated to donate their time, energy and expertise based on the vision of the organization. From sponsoring 50 orphans in 2005, we have grown in many folds and are now supporting close to 900 orphans in 8 countries. | Description |
