| Description | The Agency has 79 mild to profoundly deaf children enrolled in the auditory-verbal program. In December it graduated 15 students who are now listening and speaking children using no sign language and mainstreamed in regular classrooms with their hearing peers. Due to the increase in demand for its services in middle and south Georgia areas, AVC has expanded its Macon satelite to a new free standing building and hired a second therapist for Macon. In the Atlanta office, AVC hired 2 new auditory verbal therapists. In an effort to serve as many deaf and hard hearing children in Georgia, the center now offers tele-therapy for those families who cannot make the drive to one of the physical locations. During the year, the audiology department has continued to serve an average an average of 25 new clients each month. It has also doubled the number of auditory brainstem response testing (ABR). The test is used to test newborns as a follow-up after newborns fail their newborn hearing test at birth. AVC is able to conduct this test without sedation for any age. Approximately 3 of every 1,000 children are born deaf. Many more children are born with less severe degree of hearing impairment, while others may acquire hearing loss during childhood. This test helps detect deficiencies at a young age. The audilogy department is also now offering Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) evaluations. AVC has almost doubled the number of clients seen in the Audilogy department this year. | Description |
