Explanation	Page 1, Part I, Line 1: Organization's Mission Since that first summer in 1963 when the curtain went up on Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma's inaugural production, OKLAHOMA!, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma has been telling the stories of farmers and cowmen, Broadway hopefuls, red-headed orphans and many other classic and contemporary characters. Founded by 12 prominent Oklahomans who wanted to bring professional musical theatre to Oklahoma City, their mission to eventually attract a broader audience from counties throughout the state. Since that time, Lyric has not only reached patrons from more than 55 counties and several neighboring states, but also expanded its programming with the restoration of the Plaza Theatre, the extension of the regular season to include eight productions, the opening of the Thelma Gaylord Academy and the development of a statewide arts outreach program. Until 2001, Lyric was primarily a summer stock theatre company housed at a university, producing long-running large-scale musicals with mostly local talent. Lyric now produces year-round programming and is the premiere professional theatre company in the state. Between our two venues, the Civic Center Music Hall and the Plaza Theatre, Lyric is able to offer something for everyone. Lyric will open its 2012 Season with XANADU, followed by the indie rock musical SPRING AWAKENING. The summer will be a celebration of Broadway legend Chita Rivera with productions of three of her landmark musicals, BYE BYE BIRDIE, SWEET CHARITY, and CALL ME MADAM, followed by the legend herself in concert in CHITA RIVERA; MY BROADWAY, all at the Civic Center Music Hall. Rounding-out the season will be the non-musical comedy THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP and our new holiday tradition LYRIC'S A CHRISTMAS CAROL, both at the Plaza, for a total of eight productions. In 2013, we will celebrate Lyric's 50th Anniversary. Preparations have already begun, with a launch scheduled this summer. As a regional theatre company with a permanent presence in the community, Lyric has the opportunity to establish programs outside the scope of a production that helps us expand on and fulfill our nearly 50-year mission to provide excellent professional musical theater, to nurture artistic talent, to promote collaboration among the arts, and to enrich the quality of life for Oklahomans. Lyric's Thelma Gaylord Academy was established specifically to nurture young artistic talent and is committed to providing a safe, fun, and educational environment focused on cultivating the young musical theatre performers of tomorrow, as well as creating a love for theatre in all students which will last their entire lives. Lyric's Academy teaches children to break the silence of a room with the sounds of their voice. While some of our students have seen success on Broadway and in national tours, all of our students leave with more self-confidence and a strong sense that through hard work and perserverance they can find success. In an effort to eliminate financial barriers that would otherwise prohibit some students from participating in Academy programs, Lyric has established endowment funds and partnered with local organizatons to provide scholarship opportunities for those students. Lyric also maintains a commitment to education programs that provide positive arts experiences for children of all socio-economic backgrounds, and jumped at an opportunity in 2007 to revamp and expand our arts outreach program. With special grant money for Oklahoma's Centennial celebration, Lyric adapted the musical OKLAHOMA! into a 45-minute educational program for school children that toured throughout the state. Its immense popularity helped Lyric obtain permanent funding for the program, which has now traveled to 39 counties reaching nearly 160,000 children. Page 2, Part III, Line 4a: Statement of Program Service Accomplishments Lyric's Artistic Director Michael Baron joined the organization in the spring of 2010, and in that short time Baron has made a significant impact with his vision to grow Lyric's national reputation as well as expand and diversify Lyric's patron base. Feeling it is important that Lyric's productons reflect the world we live in, regardless of time period in which they were set, Baron uses non-traditional casting when possible for every Lyric production. Working the idea into Lyric's new strategic plan, Baron even sparked a lively debate on the topic at the National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) conference last fall. Baron also feels strongly about giving back to a community that has supported Lyric for so many years. In July of 2011, Lyric hosted a cabaret at the Plaza benefiting Gatewood Elementary to help fund new playground equipment, and during the holiday season collected donations from patrons for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, eventually raising more than $18,000. But a performing arts organization must, above all else, produce excellent artistic works, and in that respect Baron has excelled. His crowning artistic achievements include the 2011 productions of OLIVER! and RAGTIME, both praised for their high artistic quality, and LYRIC'S A CHRISTMAS CAROL, called by reviewers an adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic that, through humor and poignancy, will delight even us professional Scrooges. From expertly executing one of Lyric's most ambitious seasons, to introducing new and rarely produced works to Oklahoma audiences, our patrons are excited to see what Baron has in store for the future. With a full-time staff of 17, Lyric benefits from low staff turnover and has built a strong team of arts leaders. Lyric's artistic and development staff members were featured as panelists at the 2011 spring and fall NAMT Conferences, and in a national NAMT fundraising webinar. Additionally, Lyric's marketing director attended the National Arts Marketing Project Conference as one of only two Oklahoma representatives. She has also been accepted to the 2012 Oklahoma Arts Coucil Leadership Arts program, and Lyric's development director is serving as the chairman of the Oklahoma Arts Council's statewide 2012 Oklahoma Arts Conference to be held in Oklahoma City. Lyric's long-term artistic goal is to gain further national recognition by commissioning new works and providing a home for the nation's top artistic talent. As a member of NAMT, Lyric's staff plays an active role in staying connected on a national level. We continue to cast locally, while traveling to New York City each year, recruiting top Broadway talent to round out our casts. Over the years, Lyric has been highlighted in notable publications, including Playbill Magazine Online and Yahoo! News, and in 2005 USA Today named Lyric one of the 10 great places to see the lights way off Broadway! In December 2008, Lyric was featured on the cover of nationwide trade publication Drama Biz magazine for its work on The Campaign for Lyric Theatre, a successful $10 million campaign to renovate and endow the historic Plaza Theatre and two other facilities contained in the heart of a square mile area known as The Plaza District. This once-thriving commercial district has undergone a dramatic revitalization, creating a highly attractive environment for business and social activity. Since moving the The Plaza District in 2000, Lyric has made a sizeable investment in the community and has been widely praised and recognized as the anchor for the revitalization efforts. From ongoing community involvement to national ambitions, Lyric will continue to grow and thrive into our next 50 years.
