Our "First Sundays" program offers free admission to locals on the first Sunday of every month. During the winter months, a free community performance series is offered on these days, as well as hands-on art projects for children in the museum classrooms.Description

DescriptionExhibitions Wild at Heart: Highlights from the National Museum of Wildlife Art, Gilcrease and Changing Visions Galleries, May 22 August 15, 2010. Wild at Heart displays the rich history of one of North Americas proudest art traditions, featuring highlights from the Museums permanent collection. This exhibit groups the artwork into different regions, East, West, North, and South, corresponding to areas of North America that have been of particular interest to artists over the last century and a half. Wild New Ways: Maurice Sendaks Animal Kingdom, Organized by the Rosenbach Museum and Library in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Widener Gallery, May 15 September 19, 2010. Drawn from the Rosenbach Museum and Librarys collection of original Sendak material, this exhibition showcases wild things alongside their more domestic counterparts. Sendaks veritable bestiary ranges from dogs, farm animals, and well-behaved bears to the famous Wild Things and their untamed brethren. Karl Bodmers Western Wildlife: Original Sketches from the Joslyn Art Museum, Bison Gallery, May 8 August 29, 2010. Swiss artist Karl Bodmer was one of the first European artists to explore and sketch the North American frontier. Bodmer is best known today for his portraits of American Indians and his views of the extraordinary Missouri River Valley landscape. However, he also recorded the fauna encountered by the team. This exhibit brings his rarely seen records of North American fauna to light. Travels in the Interior of North America: Etchings by Karl Bodmer, Kuhn Gallery, May 8 October 17, 2010. Complementing Karl Bodmers original sketches of western wildlife from the Joslyn Art Museum, the Museum will feature a selection of his amazing etchings from its own collection of prints from Travels in the Interior of North America. A record of Prince Maximilians scientific observations illustrated with etchings by Bodmer, Travels premiered in Europe between 1839 and 1843 and was among the first publications to showcase the American West. Great Plains: Americas Lingering Wild, Photography by Michael Forsberg, King and Members Galleries, October 2, 2010 January 30, 2011. Less than 200 years ago, the Great Plains of North America were perhaps the greatest grassland ecosystem on Earth. Then, in the blink of an evolutionary eye, much of its grandeur was gone. As American settlers expanded west, the native grazers, top predators, and indigenous cultures of the plains were systematically wiped out. The prairie was plowed up, fenced in, overgrazed, paved over, and otherwise degraded. Today, this fragmented landscape is the most endangered and least protected ecosystem on the continent. Dusk to Dawn: Nocturnes from the Collection, Gilcrease and Changing Visions Galleries, October 30, 2010 May 1, 2011. Dusk to Dawn highlights work from the Permanent Collection depicting animals during the hours from early evening through late morning, a favorite time for wildlife to venture out of hiding and forage for food. Twilight is also a favorite time among artists to paint; the low light creates glorious sunsets, long shadows, and amazing, often moody, atmospheric effects. This exhibit opens discussions about the practice of painting nocturnes and twilight scenes as it facilitates education about nocturnal animal behavior. African Adventures with William R. Leigh and his Contemporaries, Works on Paper and Sculpture Widener Gallery, October 2, 2010 April 2, 2011. In 1926, famed western artist William R. Leigh joined an expedition led by naturalist and sculptor Carl Akeley to gather material for the African Hall of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The studies he created during that trip formed the basis upon which many of the diorama backgrounds were created. Leigh also used his African experiences to write and illustrate Frontiers of Enchantment: An Artists Adventures in Africa (published in 1938). The Museum will display the original illustrations Leigh created for his book. Collection Spotlight: Rembrandt Bugatti and the Antwerp School, Kuhn Gallery, October 23, 2010 April 24, 2011. Rembrandt Bugatti ranks among the most influential animal artists of the 20th century. Working from live animal models at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and later at the Antwerp Zoological Gardens in Belgium, Bugatti brought a sense of immediacy to his work as he captured the individual characteristics of specific animals. In Antwerp, Bugatti worked alongside fellow animalier artists Alberic Collin and Frans Jochems, in the supportive artistic environment of the Antwerp Zoo. Change of Seasons: Wildlife in Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, King and Members Galleries February 12 May 1, 2011. One of the strengths of the Museums Permanent Collection is its breadth and flexibility, which allows us to explore a variety of topics, from art history to natural behavior. Because many artists pride themselves on their accuracy in terms of recording animal behavior in the wild, the Museum can use its collection to show how animals adapt to the various seasons of the year. From bears fattening up for their long winter hibernation to elk in velvet, this exhibit shows not only beautiful artwork, but also wildlife in different stages of development, preparing for the coming season.Description

SFAS 116Schedule D, Part III, Line 1aPursuant to an option provided by SFAS No. 116, the Museum does not capitalize its art collection. In so doing, the art is held for public exhibition and education. Proceeds from sales of collection items are used to acquire other items for the collection. The Museum's art collection consists of over 5,000 catalogued items by more than 600 different artists covering a span of over 4,000 years. The majority of the collection focuses on representations of North American wildlife by artists of European descent from the late 19th through the early 21st century. Other specific areas of specialization within the collection include the work of Carl Rungius, the work of Robert Kuhn, work depicting the American Bison, and work depicting the American West. The collection strives to represent a diverse sampling of the artists, styles and time periods in which wildlife art has been produced. Stewardship policies include written procedures for accession of art, deaccession of art, art on loan to the Museum and art on loan from the Museum. The policies also include procedures for the care of the collection such as preservation, safety and security, installation, and packaging and shipping. The policies detail the procedures for inventorying the collection, including labeling, monitoring, record keeping, and record reconciliation, access, reproduction and insurance. The Museum tracks the collection at original purchased or donated value and uses a mutually agreed upon value for loaned items, as a whole, for purposes of adequate insurance coverage. In addition, the Museum's facility is specifically designed to protect the collection from possible damage.
CollectionsSchedule D, Part III, Line 4The Museum's collection contains over 5,000 catalogued items including paintings, sculptures, prints, sketches and archival material related to wildlife and humanity's relationship with nature. The collection is used to educate everyone from general museum visitors to researchers interested in specific topics related to wildlife and nature.
Donations of ArtSchedule D, Part III, Line 5The Museum did solicit gifts of artwork to be sold. The solicitations were made only to artists for donations of their own artwork.
Use of Endowment FundsSchedule D, Part V, Line 4Long-term support of Museum operations, funding of educational programs, exhibits, curator of education position, art conservation, curatorial research and related programs.
Other Reconciling ItemsSchedule D, Part XI, Line 8Change in Value of Beneficial Interest 90,141
FIN 48 DisclosureSchedule D, Part XVIThe Internal Revenue Service has ruled that the Museum qualifies under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRC. The Museum also has been determined not to be a private foundation under Section 509(a)(1) of the IRC but is a public charity. The Museum applies a "more likely than not" measurement methodology to reflect the financial statement impact of uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. After evaluating the tax positions taken, none are considered to be uncertain; therefore, no amounts have been recognized as of April 30, 2011. If incurred, interest and penalties associated with tax positions are recorded in the period assessed as general and administrative expense. No interest or penalties have been assessed as of April 30, 2011. Tax years that remain subject to examination include 2008 through the current year.

Third Parties Involved in Non-Cash ContributionsSchedule M, Part I, Line 32bStock donations are transferred by donor's broker to a NMWA account at Merrill Lynch who is then instructed to sell the stock. Artwork that is donated for the express purpose of resale is sold through a third party (art auctions such as March in Montana, etc.), but no third party solicits or processes non-cash contribtuions.
Revenues Not Reported in Column CSchedule M, Part I, Line 33As the Museum does not include our collection on the balance sheet, no income and expenses are recorded for donated works per an option under SFAS No. 116. Donated Art, Book and Artifact were donated and accessioned as part of our collection of art and library items. The revenue reported was generated from the sale of artwork donated with the express purpose of creating revenue for the general operating fund.

Conflict of Interest PolicyPart VI, Section B, Line 12cAn annual questionnaire is sent to each trustee. The Chief Financial Officer reviews the responses to determine if any conflicts exist. No conflicts have been noted.
Process of Determining CompensationPart VI, Section B, Line 15Prior to the close of each fiscal year, the Chairman and Vice Chairman assess in writing the performance of the CEO in light of stated goals and objectives. In keeping with the terms and conditions of any relevant employment contract, a recommendation is then made to the Executive Committee regarding compensation for the upcoming year, which reviews and approves the CEO's compensation. An independent salary review is performed every three years. The organization maintains the appropriate documentation of the compensation agreement.
Documents Available to PublicPart VI, Section C, Line 19The governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are available upon request.
Executive CommitteePart VI, Section A, Line 1The Executive Committee consists of the Chairman, Chairman Emeritus, Vice-Chairman, Treasurer & Finance Committee Chairman, Development Committee Chairman, Collections Committee Chairman, Facility & Grounds Committee Chair, Community Focus Committee Chairman, Nominating Committee Chairman, and Strategic Planning Chairman. All are members of the Board. The Executive Committee is empowered to act when the full board has not convened. If either the Board delegates an item to the Executive Committee, or the president/CEO brings an item to the Executive Committee which needs action, they can act. If they do act, the full Board still hears the issue and could overturn the Executive Committee, though that is not anticipated.
