| Mission Description | Organization MissionThe mission of the YMCA of Greater Long Beach is to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice though programs that develop healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Over 35,250 people were served in Long Beach and our 11 partner cities in 2011 through three areas of focus: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Y programs help strengthen families and show how people of all backgrounds can live together, growing toward their full potential; encourage and support healthy lifestyles by engaging the communities we serve and providing opportunities for people of all ages to pursue health and well-being; support the development of youth, teens, and young adults by developing leaders, encouraging community service, and providing opportunities to build workforce skills; promote social and ethnic harmony by championing diversity and inclusion, and providing multi-cultural opportunities guided by our values. | Part X | Part X : FIN48 Footnote | The Association is exempt from federal income and state franchise taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and Section 23701(d) of the California Revenue and Taxation Code, respectively. The Association has been classified as "other than a private foundation" by the Internal Revenue Service. The Association recognized the financial statement benefit of tax positions, such as filing status of tax exempt, only after determining that the relevant tax authority would more likely than not sustain the position following an audit. The Association has not recorded an income tax liability for unrecognized tax benefits. As of December 31, 2011, the Association's tax years ending December 31, 2007 through December 31, 2011 remain subject to examination. |

The endowment includes assets of donor-restricted funds that the Association must hold in perpetuity and assets that must be held for a donor-specified period and purpose. The Association has adopted investment and spending policies for assets that attempt to provide sufficient income to sustain funding programs as intended by donors while also maintaining the purchasing power of the endowment. The Association's policy is to distribute up to 5% of the fair market value of the investments each year using a three year trailing average. Additional distributions may be made in accordance with donor restrictions. |
