| Description | Activity Center - IYG serves young people ages 12-20 who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ) and their friends. The activity center is open Wed-Fri evenings serving 764 unique (a 43% increase over 2011) with 4,600 total visits (a 35% increase over 2011). All programs are free. Youth socializing or participating in programs are adult supervised at all times. IYG is a safe place to build self-confidence, explore individualism and develop friendships within a community that values fairness, acceptance, respect for diversity and equality. | Description | Educational Outreach Program - This program focuses on eliminating the harassment that many LGBT youth experience in school. IYG's Education Outreach coordinator facilitates the formation of Gay Straight Alliances (GSAs) in highs schools and provides capacity building to existing GSAs. IYG initially concentrated on establishing GSAs in the Central Indiana area, but now these services reach many different locations in Indiana, such as Evansville, Bloomington, Lafayette, South Bend, and Ft. Wayne and many smaller communities. GSAs are extremely important in high schools. Research positively correlates the presence of a GSA with a decrease in harassment and bullying at schools and an increase in school attendance and grade point average of LGBT students. IYG served approximately 50 high schools in 2011 and worked with over 750 students and adult sponsors. | Description |

| Description | Community Education and Cultural Competency Training: Community education is the key to changing attitudes. Through education IYG strives to help parents be more accepting and understanding, help other social service workers be more sensitive and aware of the complications that being LGBT might have on the lives of the youth they serve, and help the community in general become a more welcoming place for LGBT youth. Workshops and cultural competency training are developed for parents of LGBT youth, social service workers, juvenile justice workers, foster parents, medical personnel and educators. Speaking engagements are provided to many community organizations, churches, service groups and college classes. Over 950 individuals participated in some type of workshop, training or speaking engagement given by IYG. IYG also works with the Indianapolis Public Schools, other area school districts and with the Juvenile Court in order to make their staff more informed and sensitive to the additional stresses associated with being an adolescent and LGBT. | Description |

Through education IYG strives to help parents be more accepting and understanding, help other social service workers be more sensitive and aware of the complications that being LGBT might have on the lives of the youth they serve, and help the community in general become a more welcoming place for LGBT youth. Workshops and cultural competency training are developed for parents of LGBT youth, social service workers, juvenile justice workers, foster parents, medical personnel and educators. Speaking engagements are provided to many community organizations, churches, service groups and college classes. Over 950 individuals participated in some type of workshop, training or speaking engagement given by IYG. IYG also works with the Indianapolis Public Schools, other area school districts and with the Juvenile Court in order to make their staff more informed and sensitive to the additional stresses associated with being an adolescent and LGBT. |
