DescriptionLeadership TrainingGlobal Ambassadors Program: Vital Voices has built on 16 years of global experience in training and mentoring women leaders to establish the Global Ambassadors Program, a five-year partnership with Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Through the Global Ambassadors Program, emerging women leaders (mentees) receive mentorship, training and opportunities for visibility for the work which they undertake from Global Ambassadors (mentors) who are global leaders in the business, nonprofit, government and media sectors. In 2012, Vital Voices organized the program in three countries - Haiti, South Africa and India. Each program engaged five to six mentees who received strategic support and guidance by their Global Ambassador mentors to identify action steps and to achieve professional goals. These week-long programs included facilitated one-on-one mentorship sessions; trainings on topics ranging from advocacy to strategic communications; and public forums to provide visibility on critical issues impeding women's economic advancement. Further, in Haiti and South Africa, participants worked together on a larger group project. In Haiti, mentees and mentors alike supported the completion of the National Women's Platform for the Redevelopment of Haiti, and in South Africa, participants engaged in intensive conversations about the challenges facing women in the areas of voice and agency.Global Leadership Awards Honoree Program: Each year, Vital Voices hosts the Global Leadership Awards, honoring unsung heroines and courageous women leaders working to strengthen democracy, increase economic opportunity and protect human rights in communities around the world. In 2012, Vital Voices honored nine such leaders at an evening program attended by over 2,300 guests. In addition to recognizing these leaders at the event, Vital Voices hosted a week-long Honoree Program in Washington, DC focused on supporting the honorees to build their capacity, credibility and connections. Throughout the seven-day program, Vital Voices introduced the eight attending Honorees to key stakeholders and facilitated individualized opportunities to help develop new connections and strengthen their networks of support. Further, the Honorees participated in moderated public discussions to showcase their work; engaged in training with the Vital Voices Strategic Communications team on topics including public speaking skills, on-camera communication techniques, messaging, speech-writing and social networking; and honed their leadership and mentorship skills through work with 50 emerging young women leaders participating in the ANNpower Intiative. Finally the work of each Honoree was featured using film, photography and social media platforms to raise their respective public profiles and build awareness and visibility for the leaders and their work.Fortune/State Mentoring Program: Vital Voices, through the support of U.S. Department of State and in partnership with the FORTUNE Most Powerful Women's Summit, gathered 25 emerging leaders from 17 countries from across the globe to come to the United States for a month long mentorship with top American businesswomen as well as intensive leadership and communications training in Washington, DC and New York City.Vital Voices prepared mentors and mentees for the mentorship experience, provided guidance and served as a resource for successful mentoring models, developed and facilitated both the leadership trainings and meetings with American women leaders in Washington as well as the debrief and communications/media training in New York. Vital Voices also maintains the alumnae network through communication, resources, further participation in Vital Voices programs and connects them with other leaders in the Vital Voices Network. To date, more than fifty percent of 2012 program alumnae have participated in other Vital Voices programs. Vital Voices has also deepened ties with former program participants, helping 2011 alumnae by assisting them in organizing their own mentoring programs, provided them with grant opportunities and further trained several of them through regional and global programs.ANNpower Vital Voices Initiative: Vital Voices, in partnership with ANN INC., selected fifty rising American women leaders to participate in a training and mentorship program held in Washington, DC for three days. Selected participants, who are juniors and seniors in high school, worked together to develop community projects and were advised by established women leaders from across the world. Vital Voices managed the recruitment and application process, implemented the leadership training curriculum and encouraged ongoing mentoring relationships and peer connections amongst the group. After undergoing leadership training, participants were invited to apply for grants to implement projects that positively impact their communities. Fourteen grants supported projects ranging from creating mentoring opportunities for young women entering politics, to enabling youth activism through the arts, to encouraging girls to enter the fields of science, technology, and math. Vital Voices oversaw the application and grant review process, and worked closely with grant recipients to implement their community projects. Vital Voices continues to engage Fellows through online communications, social media and other relevant opportunities. Supporting Public Advocacy Regional Competitiveness (SPARC): In 2012, Vital Voices launched the SPARC program, a 4-year economic advocacy program. The SPARC program works with Vital Voices' businesswomen association partners on advocacy for an enabling economic environment for women. In 2012, Vital Voices provided expert consultations, advocacy capacity-building support, and financial support to help qualified Africa Businesswomen's Network partners strengthen advocacy skills and design robust advocacy campaigns. AWEP: Vital Voices conducted a three-day follow-on training program for 25 African Women's Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP) participants. The follow-on training provided a robust combination of leadership and enterprise development training to help high-potential entrepreneurs strengthen their own businesses, expand their revenues, generate more high value jobs, foster innovation, and contribute to sustainable economic growth that will improve quality of life for families throughout sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to this training, Vital Voices provided 12 participants small grants to implement their strategic plans and develop new products to foster growth.WEAmericas: In September 2012, Vital Voices carried out the Women's Entrepreneurship in the Americas (WEAmericas) program, which brought 35 women business owners from 21 different countries to Managua, Nicaragua for a four-day capacity-building program to achieve business growth. A follow-on training program for women entrepreneurs who participated in an earlier Department of State-sponsored exchange program in May, the training focused particularly on increasing participants' businesses' share in international markets and on building their professional network as well as building knowledge, skills, and abilities the women entrepreneurs needed to scale their businesses, with a special emphasis on export and sourcing as strategies for enterprise growth.Description

DescriptionWomen' Global Leadership NetworkBusinesswomen's Networks (BWN): The economic development portfolio consists of two major work-streams: SME development and the BWN. The BWN is the premier channel for partnering and delivering valuable economic opportunities and programs to businesswomen at scale. Currently the BWN operates in three regions: Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and Middle East and North Africa (MENA), working to achieve broad-based social and economic benefits for society and a more enabling environment for women's economic engagement. The three BWNs include 19 member countries. In April 2012, the 1st MENA BWN Forum took place in Dubai, UAE under the patronage of H.E. Sheikha Lubna Al-Qassimi, Minister of Foreign Trade, United Arab Emirates and with support from local host, the Dubai Business Women's Council. For the first time, business and professional women and entrepreneurs, all members of the MENA Businesswomen's Network, joined with their supporters, subject experts, representatives from academia, governments, foundations, philanthropies, journalists and students to connect and learn and to unleash the economic potential and power of women in the Middle East and North Africa by leveraging the MENA Businesswomen's Network. Not a traditional conference event from the first moment, the MENA BWN set out to deliver a program that would engage participants not only for the two day conference, but with actions and impacts that would be in place long after. Over 350 people attended the Forum, coming from 20 different countries, including 14 MENA countries. Member organizations of the MENA BWN, called "Hubs," brought delegations of their members who were able to network and meet each other and explore business opportunities across borders, share best practices and in many cases find common linkages. Over 91% of participants reported making at least one networking connection with 75% making at least four and 55% making over 11 connections.Accelerating the Growth and Capacity of the Libyan Business Women Committee (MENA): The Support for Libyan Businesswomen and Entrepreneurs program was designed to engage Libyan businesswomen in the MENA Businesswomen's Network launch Forum, held in Dubai in April 2012, to provide continuing support for the Libyan women to create their own independent businesswomen's association, and to provide training to the women on key business skills targeted by the participants at the MENA BWN Forum. Following the Forum in Dubai, the Libyan women returned home and began the process of creating a new independent businesswomen's association. By the end of the project, the new Pioneers Libyan Business Women's Association was created, and is now an independent NGO operating in Libya. In August 2012, five women from the newly founded association traveled to Cairo, Egypt for a business skills 'training of trainers' session led by a Vital Voices network member. The training was designed around four skills identified as priorities by the Libyan businesswomen: writing a business plan, conducting a feasibility study, building business management skills, and accessing capital. As of the program's conclusion, the association began the planning phase of implementing a training based on what they learned in Cairo. With the facilitation of Vital Voices, they began developing partnerships with two US-based development agencies to carry on the momentum of the program. Despite the initial obstacles this program faced, it ultimately capitalized on the newfound spirit of civic engagement in Libya and yielded an association founded on a spirit of collaboration, progress, and hope.Access to Finance (MENA): In partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Middle East & North Africa Businesswomen's Network (MENA BWN), Vital Voices published "Ready for Growth: Solutions to Increase Access to Finance for Women Owned Businesses in the Middle East and North Africa," a report that examines MENA businesswomen's challenges in accessing finance. Informed by surveys of 431 women business owners across eight economies, the report assesses the demand for improved access to capital, information, and training. A series of solutions and recommendations outline suggestions to improve products and services tailored to women-owned SMEs and engage various stakeholders in the ecosystem of support for women owned businesses, including governments, commercial banks, women's business associations, international financial institutions, and NGOs.In 2012, Africa BWN partners in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa received a total of $200,000 in sub-grants from Vital Voices to conduct entrepreneurship development trainings, mentoring programs, and information sessions and networking opportunities which served 1,271 women entrepreneurs. Partners held supplier readiness workshops to educate women entrepreneurs about the supplier qualifications and procurement processes of multinational corporations. The Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria partners also held Entrepreneurs in Handcrafts trainings locally (based on the Vital Voices curriculum), to offer business management and export readiness training for women in the crafts and home decor sectors. In Nigeria they also held a market access program to link entrepreneurs with buyers. All partners held business growth mentoring programs, matching women owners of nascent enterprises with seasoned entrepreneurs to achieve specific business development goals. The newly formed Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) Businesswomen's Network, launched in June 2011, mobilizes and connects businesswomen professionals and entrepreneurs to promote economic growth and strengthen the business environment for women's engagement through training, mentorship and capacity building programs. In 2012, the LAC BWN member organizations or "Hubs" in Argentina and Nicaragua received sub-grants to develop the new LAC BWN Membership Model, which they continued to advance throughout the year. In April 2012, Hub members met to discuss their work on membership and an overall regional strategy for the network at a regional meeting hosted by the LAC BWN's new Hub partner in El Salvador. In November 2012, the Mexico BWN joined the network during the International Trade Center's Second Annual Women's Vendors and Exhibition Forum in Mexico City with a convening of strategic and implementing partners.International Trade Centre's (ITC) Women Vendors and Exhibition Forum (WVEF): In 2012, Vital Voices participated in the Second Annual WVEF held in Mexico City, Mexico. As a partner of the event, Vital Voices led a panel during the Executive Roundtable ("Tackling Supply Side Constraints to Procurement") and supported the participation of 27 businesswomen representing 15 countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East and North Africa. The Forum resulted in the signing of 34 letters of intent (LOIs) between VV network members and buyers and other women vendors, demonstrating buyer interest in continuing post-forum negotiations, potentially leading to the purchase of goods or services. Fourteen (14) of the 34 letters of intent (LOIs) specified financial value amounting to over $2,000,000 as reported by the ITC. In addition to signing LOIs, each woman business owner on average made between two and three new business connections. Eighty-nine percent (89%) of participants reported overall satisfaction with the event and 85% rated the event as helpful with regards to making new connections that may provide opportunities to strengthen or grow their businesses.Policy Advocates (MENA): Over a period of more than two years, Vital Voices worked with women in 12 countries in the MENA region and awarded seven subgrants and contracts to local organizations in seven countries. Through these subgrants and contracts, women were able to engage governments and key stakeholders on changes to the new constitutions in Egypt and Tunisia, promote economic empowerment for women in Yemen in the National Dialogue, advocate for implementation of women-friendly workplace policies in Jordan, lobby for the passage of laws in Lebanon that remove gender discrimination from current legislation, promote amendments to the family law in Morocco making the legal age of marriage 18 years, and engage in debate around women' issues in the United Arab Emirates.Throughout these advocacy successes, Vital Voices provided ongoing support that was critical in assisting teams through challenges, providing ongoing technical assistance, and in leveraging potential opportunities. The creation of the Advocacy and Public-Private Dialogue Toolkit provided a basis for basic training, while continuous networking, sharing resources, and monitoring helped the teams reach their goals. During the more than two years the Policy Advocates program was operating, both Vital Voices staff and programs in the region.Description

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11The federal Form 990 Tax Return is prepared by Vital Voices' the outside tax preparers. The outside tax preparers send the completed draft federal Form 990 tax return to Vital Voices Finance and Executive personnel. The Vice President of Finance and Administration, the President/CEO, and the Chief Operating Officer review the Form 990 for accuracy. Then, the federal Form 990 is disseminated to the Finance and Audit Committees. Once these Committees have reviewed and provided any comments or edits, the federal Form 990 is disseminated to the Board of Directors to provide any comments. If there are any resulting changes, the final federal Form 990 is re-circulated before the final filing is made.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cBoard members file a conflict of interest statement on an annual basis, which is filed with the Chairman of the Board indicating whether there are any potential conflicts of interest that might be expected to occur within the following year. Any such potential conflicts will be reported to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. The Executive Committee shall decide whether the Board member with such potential conflict of interest shall be required either to divest such interest or to resign from the Board of Directors. All employees sign an Employment Manual and Policies Acknowledgement Form, which includes agreeing to abide by Vital Voices' employee Conflict of Interest Policy.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15Vital Voices periodically engages (approx every 3 to 4 years) a third party consultant to perform a salary survey supported by research of current market data for comparable position levels within the industry. This survey is then used to make any updates to the existing organizational career (position) levels and salary ranges. A committee comprised of Board members and senior management engages in this process. As part of Vital Voices' fiscal year budget process, a salary budget is developed by management with any reasonable merit increase assumptions. The fiscal year budget is proposed to the Finance Committee and then the Executive Committee and full Board of Directors for approval. Any key employee salaries are determined based on the specific criteria and requirements for the position and within the range determined by the aforementioned process. The CEO, or as delegated by the CEO, the Chief Operating Officer, approves all salaries of Vital Voices. Any annual increases are reviewed globally across Vital Voices and set by the CEO and COO based on a yearly review process. The CEO's salary is set annually by a committee of the Board of Directors as part of a yearly review process. Upon hire, the Chief Operating Officer's salary is set by the CEO with the approval of Board Officers.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19Vital Voices makes its federal Form 990 and its audited financial statements available on its website. It also makes its governing documents and conflict of interest policy available upon request.
