| Mission Description | Phoenix Multisport's mission is to foster a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from alcohol and substance abuse and those that choose to live a sober life. Through pursuits like climbing, hiking, running, swimming, road and mountain biking, yoga, strength training, racing and other activities, they seek to help their members develop and maintain the emotional strength they need to stay sober. Phoenix members become part of a community that places value on the future rather than the past. | Description | In 2012, Phoenix Multisport continued to grow in Colorado, reaching 2,678 new participants while expanding our depth of programming. The total number of people who have attended a Phoenix event increased to 7,430, up 56% from 2011 totals. Peer recovery support services, such as those offered at Phoenix, help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse. Phoenix Multisport's Founder and Executive Director, Scott Strode, was named as a 2012 CNN Hero. Early in the year, CNN aired a special showcasing Scott and the work that Phoenix has done to help recovering addicts and alcoholics in Colorado live healthy, active lives. In the fall, Scott was named as a CNN Top Ten Hero for 2012, and was featured on an awards show in December. As a result of this exposure, we received a yearlong outpouring of requests for expansion from across the country. Phoenix spent much of the year working toward fulfilling those requests by developing long-term plans to expand our model to other states. 2012 also saw increases in attendance in all three of Phoenix Multisport's Colorado chapters. In Denver, boxing and CrossFit(TM) classes at our Champa facility experienced a significant upsurge in popularity. February saw the grand opening of our new space in Colorado Springs, which has offices for two full-time staff members and features a large flexible space used for yoga, strength-training, socials, and other events. This facility allows Phoenix to better serve active military personnel, veterans, and other members of the Colorado Springs community. Programs hosted by the Boulder Chapter, where Phoenix began in 2007, remain robust and popular, a testament to the continuing demand for a sober, active community in the areas where we operate. | Description |
