| Description | Present maritime cultural history of the Central California Coast within an international context through collections and unique, interactive exhibits and educational programs. An estimated 18,000 visitors enjoyed the Museum's diverse exhibits. The Museum opened 9 new exhibits in the year ended 2012, incorporating both pieces from its collections as well others as a result of collaborations and traveling exhibits. Art classes for children 6-13 enrich their appreciation of our maritime community. Docent tours engage visitors in active viewing and discussion of our local maritime history. Monthly lectures and films delve deeper into a variety of maritime subjects. The Passport Program gives free admission for local students and adults to participating museums and education sites. Nearly 8,000 students visited the Museum. In addition, as part of the Museum's commitment to outreach, Museum docents visited local schools for science fairs to share navigation and charting techniques. | Description |

| Description | To promote self-esteem in school age children through Tall Ship Programs. 1) The Spirit of Dana Point Overnight Tall Ship Program allows approximately 400 4th and 5th graders to "reenact" local history, living the life of an 1830s "before the mast" sailor. Coordinating with California School curriculum, students read the book "Two Years before the Mast" by Richard Henry Dana, then participate by being mustered onshore and spending the night aboard ship. Activities include cooking dinner and breakfast in the galley, standing night watch, and searching for hides and tallow in the harbor.2) The Marine Science Tall Ship Program sends 6th-9th graders out to sea for three hours aboard a tall ship, utilizing their math and science skills to practice charting and navigation, learn plate tectonics, how the ocean food web works, and dissecting sea cucumbers.Both of these programs provide hands-on experience and build teamwork, leadership, and communication skills while increasing self-esteem. | Description |
