DescriptionExhibitions and Collections - See Schedule OExhibitions and Collections: Each year, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) presents a wide range of world-class exhibitions that provide a variety of experiences with art, attracting more than 600,000 visitors annually. Two themes guided the DAM's 2012 program: celebrating individual artists who have made an extraordinary impact and igniting creativity in the community through programs that provide engaging and interactive experiences with art.The first major exhibition of the artist's work in the United States, Xu Beihong: Pioneer of Modern Chinese Painting provided a unique opportunity to share the work of a Chinese national treasure with visitors. The DAM's own stunning collection of Chinese textiles further highlighted China's rich artistic legacy in the accompanying exhibition Threads of Heaven. In the works on paper gallery, Scapes showcases drawings by 16 artists exploring the landscapes, seascapes, even skyscapes and dreamscapes that occupy our imagination. The Photography Department presented Garry Winogrand: Women are Beautiful, a selection of nearly 50 photographs from the museum's permanent collection culled from the hundreds that Garry Winogrand took of women on the street. The March 25, 2012 opening of Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective kicked-off a dynamic five-year exhibition program anchored by high-profile, general interest 'beacon exhibitions.' The exhibition featured more than 200 outfits, taking visitors on a journey through the designer's 40 years of creativity. Inspired by Yves Saint Laurent, Fashion Studio let visitors try their hand at fashion-related activities and watch some of Denver's own fashion designers at work. Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection debuted in April with its own intriguing look at the power of design through Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's pins, used to make political statements to her counterparts around the globe. And, Colorado design was celebrated in three summer exhibitions: Now Boarding: Fentress Airports + The Architecture of Flight, Design Lab: Three Studios, and Open for Design: A DAM Community Challenge. In 2012, the Western American Art galleries featured the work of two exceptional contemporary artists with Ed Ruscha: On the Road and Theodore Waddell's Abstract Angus. These exhibitions represent two individual artistic responses to the inspiration of the west. Opened in September, El Anatsui: When I Last Wrote To You About Africa has brought together the full spectrum of work by this acclaimed artist. A native of Ghana and resident of Nigeria, Anatsui gained international attention a dozen years ago for his dazzling metal wall sculptures created from thousands of found Nigerian liquor-bottle tops.Description

DescriptionEducation Programs - See Schedule OEducation Programs: The Museum is committed to making art meaningful and enjoyable to people of all ages and backgrounds through its programs, exhibitions and installed galleries. The Museum's education department is a pioneer in the field of museum education, and is well-regarded internationally for its innovative approach to program development. Programs include:In-Gallery Installations: The Museum's in-gallery interpretive installations provide visitors with a variety of ways to explore temporary exhibitions and permanent collections on their own. Discovery libraries, Hot Spot and Create Stations in-gallery activities, art-making, writing and response activities, gallery games for kids and families, browsing areas, and more deepen visitors' experiences with art. DAM staff also host 25-30 visits a year from national and international colleagues wanting to experience our approaches to in-gallery interpretation. Family Programs: The DAM is committed to being a truly family-friendly institution. The Museum's approach is two-pronged: 1) offer programs and activities at "peak family times" (weekends and school breaks); and 2) integrate family materials into installations, exhibitions, and public spaces so there is always something for families to do together. Family activities are always available and included with the cost of general admission. Family Backpacks (kid-sized packs filled with games and learning materials for families to use on their own in the galleries) and Art Tubes (artists' tubes filled with a creative art making project) can be checked out on weekends and school breaks. Discovery Library costume areas, eye spy and other gallery games, as well as the Just for Fun Family Center (a collection and exhibition-based hands-on activity area) and the Kids Corner (a do-it yourself art project space) are always available. Create Playdates! targets 3-5 year olds and their families, helping grown-ups explore the museum with young children through storytelling and art making opportunities. And The Studio is a dedicated workshop for hands-on projects and artist demonstrations inspired by themes found in exhibitions. In 2012, The Paint Studio accompanies paintings exhibitions including Becoming Van Gogh. Adult and College Programs: The DAM offers a wide range of opportunities for adults to discover, explore and make personal connections to collections and exhibitions. Programs range from tours, studio classes, and art history courses to Art and Wine Pairings, Conversation Lounges, and Insider Moments in the galleries. The DAM's Untitled series engages young adults with art and creativity through unconventional, often unexpected encounters with art the last Friday of the month. Online programs complement existing onsite offerings and incorporate participatory creative experiences that attract and engage younger adults for whom participation and technology are extremely important. College students from universities throughout the region participate in internship programs that provide insight into museum professions, and work directly with visitors through our Hot Spot program, a series of in-gallery stations with touchable materials that reach an average of 12,000 people each year.School and Teacher Programs: The hallmark of DAM's school tour program is our interactive touring approach. Our introductory all-Museum tours, Perception Games and Imagination Games, have been featured at several national conferences, as have the touchable materials and activities we've developed for our culture and architecture based tours. Around 50,000 students visit the museum each year to explore topics related to visual arts, social studies and language arts curricula. Creativity Resource, the Museum's online resource for teachers, uses the creativity of artists to inspire creativity in teachers and students and provides downloadable art images, information, lesson plans and multi-media resources, and curated blogs on cultural and creativity topics. The DAM provides professional development for teachers on-site and on-line through workshops, webinars, and in-services custom-designed to meet the needs of individual school districts.Community Partnerships: The education department is involved in several strategic collaborations designed to encourage museum visitation by a broader audience. Emphasis is on introducing non-visiting families to the museum. Current collaborations include work with the Mayor's Office for Education and Children, the Denver Public Library's learning and language branches, Assets for Colorado Youth, and several other local community and social service organizations. Community access tours given by specially trained community and Spanish language guides provide these groups with introductory tours of the museum stressing comfort and awareness of the Museum and all that it has to offer. Other accessibility programs include Art & About tours for individuals with Alzheimer's and early dementia and their care givers, accessibility options for visitors with special needs, and more. Overall, education programs both onsite and online served more than 350,000 people in 2012.Description

Part III, Line 1a:The Museum's collections, which were acquired through purchases and contributions, are not recognized as assets on the statement of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired. Contributed collection items are not reflected on the financial statements. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes. Museum policies require that such proceeds be used only to acquire additional art objects. All of the Museum's collection items are held for educational, research, exhibition, and curatorial purposes. Each of these collection items is cataloged, preserved, and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously.
Part III, Line 4:The Denver Art Museum is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and presentation of art for broadly diverse audiences. With approximately 70,000 works of art in its care, the Museum holds the largest and most comprehensive collection of world art between Kansas City and the West. The Museum is an accessible, quality destination, welcoming over 600,000 visitors annually. The Museum is committed to its role as a cultural resource providing shared experiences of art and culture to the Rocky Mountain region and beyond. Collections are organized into nine curatorial departments: architecture, design & graphics; Asian art; modern and contemporary art; native arts; new world; painting and sculpture; textile arts; western American art; and photography. The Denver Art Museum strives to enrich the lives of present and future generations through the acquisition, presentation and preservation of works of art. The collections further the organization's exempt purpose by providing the sustenance necessary to educate visitors about the past, present and future, and inspire life-long learning.

Return ReferenceReturnReferenceExplanationExplanationIdentifierIdentifier
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6The Denver Art Museum has over 28,500 members who approve the slate of directors nominated by the Board of Trustees at the annual general membership meeting.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7aDenver Art Museum members approve the slate of directors as nominated by the Board of Trustees.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11The IRS Form 990 is completed annually and a copy is provided to the Museum's Board Secretary for review. The Chief Financial Officer provides the Form 990 to the Museum Board's Finance/Audit Committee Chair for review. The Museum's CFO discusses any questions or concerns with the Secretary and the Finance/Audit Committee Chair and necessary changes are updated on the Form 990. Once the CFO is in agreement with the Secretary and the Finance/Audit Committee Chair regarding the finished Form 990, it is signed and dated by the Director and submitted to the IRS by the filing deadline. A copy is made available to all Museum Board Trustees prior to filing with the IRS.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cThe Museum's Conflict of Interest Policy is designed to protect the Museum by defining what is a conflict of interest or potential conflict of interest and providing procedures to identify and address conflicts of interest and potential conflicts of interest. Museum trustees, members of committees with delegated powers from the Board of Trustees, officers (Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer), and specific employees including the Museum Director, President, Executive Assistant to Director, Deputy Director - Operations, CFO, Chief Curator, Curator, Assistant or Associate Curator, Department Director, or Department Associate Director (all "Interested Persons") are all covered under the policy. On an annual basis, each Interested Person must complete a "Disclosure and Compliance" form. This form requests information concerning all actual or potential conflicts of interest involving Interested Persons, their immediate family members and certain entities in which they or their immediate family members have an interest. As new trustees join the Board, new committee members are appointed, new officers are elected, or new employees who are covered under the policy are appointed (if those individuals are not already Interested Persons by reason of holding another of these positions) such individuals are also required to complete the "Disclosure and Compliance" form. In case of an actual or potential conflict of interest, the Museum uses a process at the Executive Committee level to investigate actual or potential conflicts of interest. Following disclosure of an actual or potential conflict, the person or persons involved with the conflict are not permitted to participate in any discussions relevant to determining if a conflict of interest exists. They may, however, be counted in determining the presence of a quorum at a meeting of the Executive Committee at which a conflict is being reviewed and may make a presentation to the Executive Committee to disclose the conflict and answer questions relevant thereto, but must leave the meeting during the discussion of and vote on whether the transaction or arrangement at issue resulted in a conflict of interest. If a conflict does exist, the Policy dictates ensuing steps, including investigating alternatives to the proposed transaction or arrangement and appropriate disciplinary and corrective action. The Museum maintains records concerning investigations of actual and potential conflicts of interest.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15The Museum's procedures for determining executive compensation include reviewing comparability data, monitoring the competitive market place, and approval by the executive comittee of the Board of Trustees. Determining the compensation for the Museum's other officers and key employees follows the Museum's compensation policies and practices. This includes reviewing comparability data, considering the competitive market place, and the review and approval by the Museum's executive management.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19The Museum makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon reasonable request.
Form 990, Part VII, Line 1aLewis Sharp, former Director of the Denver Art Museum (the Museum), was paid a lump sum by the Denver Art Museum Foundation (the Foundation), upon his retirement from the Museum in calendar year 2011.
