Activity Or Mission DescriptionCTS has a strong confessional heritage and an evangelical reverence for the force and beauty of the gospel of Jesus Christ in all its riches. CTS has her own character, and offers a solid program of studies, a stout platform of Bible, theology, history, apologetics, and missions on which to build her ministry. We offer students, ministers, and worship leaders first-class education and continuing education in preaching and worship in a welcoming atmosphere with a manageable workload where learning is inside a cradle of grace. We share a Reformed vision of an interconnected Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Consummation, with Jesus Christ at the center, and the people of God as the witnesses, agents, and models of God's purpose to make all things new. These characteristics give CTS a mission in the world to lend her particular passions and strengths so that the Spirit may inspire all to declare God's purpose in the world and to make it their own.ActivityOrMissionDescription

DescriptionThe Facing Your Future (FYF) program is intended to be a service CTS provides to the congregations and leaders of the CRCNA. It offers 35 bright, spiritually mature high school seniors with leadership potential the opportunity to explore vocational ministry. The program is designed to give the participants an arena in which to further discern whether or not they are called into ministry. The overarching objective of the program is to increase not only interest in vocational ministry, but also the actual number of young people training for and ultimately entering ordained ministry in the CRCNA. The program was funded by the Lilly Endowment in the amount of $218,577 for calendar years 2007 through 2010. The Lilly Foundation also granted the program $100,000 for its endowment and an additional $250,000 for a 5-year program to be used beginning this year (2012).Description

ExplanationFor all of our scholarship recipients, the funds are deposited with the degree granting institution for the benefit of the tuition charges incurred by the student. We follow the graduate program progress through reports from the students including major papers or other samplings of their academic work. Ordinarily, the extent of support does not exceed two years. For our grant recipients, funds are primarily disbursed through Seminary graduates acting in their missionary capacity. In some program instances, we also receive reports on the training program, and the site is visited by the program director or designee to review program results and at times to participate in the training events. In the case of cross-cultural internships which are a component of the Ministry Formation M.Div. program and our Master of Arts programs, need is determined by application process, supervisors are interviewed, provided with training and advice, then subsequent to the internship, reports are provided from supervisors on the performance of the student intern, and students also report on the experience and the use of the fund upon return. The Facing Your Future program sends chaperones to accompany participants, who observe the use of funds, then the organizations provide summary of expenses which are reviewed by the program director.Explanation

The Idema Food Pantry is a unique ministry subsidized by the Seminary that offers groceries to needy Seminary students and their families. It is administered by the CTS Student Senate in cooperation with the Dean of Students office and is run by the students and their spouses. http://calvinseminary.edu/community/food-pantry-and-clothing-bank/ Eligibility guidelines are received from the Michigan Emergency Food Assistance Program. Students and their families may use the Idema Food Pantry if their income is below the income eligibility guidelines.2830Cost less student contributionsFood is bought from the Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank for an average of 16 cents per pound. Each week, approximately $150 is spent to purchase approximately 900 to 1,000 pounds of food. Students and their families are asked to make a donation of $2 or $3 each time they use the pantry to cover some of the costs. Most of the funding is received from the Seminary, the Student Senate, and other supporters of the seminary.
The Clothes Closet provides used clothing, shoes and various household items free of charge to all Seminarians and their families. This is especially helpful to students from foreign countries who arrive with a suitcase and no means to furnish an apartment, let alone bed linens and tableware, and to students who are married with children. We depend upon contributions of used items from the local community to fill the shelves, racks and bins. It is administered by the Student Senate in cooperation with the Dean of Students office and is run by the Students and their spouses. http://calvinseminary.edu/community/food-pantry-and-clothing-bank/35900No cost - these are donated items.Used clothing, shoes, toys, games, various household items, used table settings, towels, pillows, bed linens, wall decorations, lamps, furniture, books, hand-made quilts, small appliances, used televisions, radios, cell phones, etc.

ExplanationThe Mentored Ministries program provides grants to US churches who qualify to sustain a M.Div. or M.A. student for expenses incurred while providing an intership in a church setting - qualification is determined by application, and subsequent to the internship, reports are submitted from the church and from the student to substantiate how the funds were used and the value of the internship experience. Student scholarships are awarded after an application and eligibility process, utilising the FAFSA form for establishing financial need and utilizing GPA and recommendations for establishing merit. For awards, competitions or other award qualifications are used to determine eligibility where applicable. The awards and scholarships are posted directly to student tuition accounts. The Center for Excellence in Preaching (CEP) co-sponsors a worship symposium with Calvin Institute for Christian Worship. The CEP also provides tuition scholarships to students in Fuller Theological Seminary and Regent University. CTS also subsidizes the day school tuition of our M.Div. students at local Christian schools. CTS subsidizes counseling services for our students.Explanation

F990_P03_S00_L00bForm 990, Part III (Cont. 2)CTS is pleased to announce that on February 29, 2012, we received unqualified approval for our Distance Learning program from the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools. We will begin offering a comprehenisive hybrid distance education Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree.
F990_P03_S00_L00cForm 990, Part III (Cont. 3)The Seminary supports a prison ministry program at Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility (in Ionia, Michigan), bringing a theological education to inmates. The program, supported by donors Ren and Elsa Broekhuizen, Gord and Marilyn Grevengoed, Jack and Jean Kuipers, Terry and Linda Van Der Aa, Mel Boonstra, the Huizenga Foundation, Clair and Diana Van Zeelt and Jim and Dolly Strikwerda, enables inmates to obtain certification in Reformed theology. And annually, John Rottman supervises a course bringing a group of CTS students and professors to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, for the purpose of exposing participants to the realities of prison and giving professors an oppurtunity to teach in Angolas Seminary program.
F990_P03_S00_L02Form 990, Part III, Line 2The vision of Institute for Global Church Planting and Renewal (IGCPR) is to foster the growth of confessionally Reformed churches both numerically and spiritually across the globe through an effective Second Timothy Chapter Two verse Two apprenticeship program. "You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others". The focus is to train men and women to start new churches and to work to renew those churches that are struggling. Many new churches are likely to be multi-cultural, especially in large urban centers, and will be planted in North America and worldwide. This presents a significant shift for CTS, as Seminaries don't typically produce church planters. Our curriculum is more missional, reshaping theological education while maintaining CTS's strong emphasis on teaching Reformed doctrine, worship and Biblical scholarship. Part of the program works to forge relationships with a range of educational institutions as well as placing a greater emphasis on long-distance-on-line learning. One aspect of the IGCPR is to take students to where successful church planters are at work and to learn from them in the community in which they work. CTS wants to develop and nurture through training the expectation among churches that it is a part of their church's mission to evangelize the community around them and to start new churches. The idea is to tap into the hunger that so many people have for a relationship with God, but need help in developing and maintaining that relationship. We teach the basic principles of planting churches for the next generation.

F990_P06_S0B_L12cForm 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12cAnnually, Trustees complete a Conflict of Interest (CoI) questionnaire, which outlines the responsibilities of Board members with respect to CoI. Board members of Calvin Theological Seminary should ordinarily not be engaged in business relationships with the school, be compensated by it for other than expenses incurred with respect to Board activities, nor realize any other material benefits from serving on the Board. If such CoI should arrise, a Trustee is expected to excuse himself/herself from Board discussion and decisions on such matters.
