DescriptionResearch involves three generalized categories-biomedical sciences, clinical and educational, or improving student learning. Biomedical science and clinical research involved 14 active externally funded grants, and 2 internally funded grants. VCOM spent over $800,000 in sponsored research, over $6,000 in internally funded grants, about $3 million for all research activities and collected over $800,000 in research revenues. Current biomedical studies include autoimmune disorders such as Lupus; immunotoxic exposures during fetal development; consequences for birth defects and adult health outcomes; investigating novel devices for examining the digestive tract; testing the mechanism of action in novel heart failure drugs; cellular mechanisms related to inflammatory bowel disease; bioterrorism and delivery agents for pathogenic substances; novel anti-oxidant therapies to combat inflammatory diseases; novel agents for the prevention and/or treatment of blast injury; traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases; vascular receptor biology; molecular bases of bacterial pathogenicity and virulence. Much of VCOM's clinical medicine research is conducted off campus at affiliated clinics and partner hospitals by medical preceptors and their students and residents, at VCOM's international and Appalachian mission sites, and on the Virginia Tech Campus, including the VT Sports Complex. Current clinical research projects include studying new drugs; novel agents for the prevention and/or developing and testing novel medical devices and medical procedures; and developing new diagnostic tests for early detection of injury of physical distress. Moreover, VCOM continues to research best practices for the use of osteopathic manipulative therapy and the correlation of manual therapies with other treatment modalities for the maximum benefit of the patient. In the most recent studies, VCOM is investigating negative interactions between certain hemoglobin variants and topical anesthetics; unusual tumor formation and growth; the relationship between extreme stress and heart disease in older women; unique clinical diagnosis of hyperthyroidism in the elderly; diagnosis and clinical outcomes of Lyme disease and other parasitic infections; muscle and tendon function/dysfunction; the implementation and use of bedside sonography in clinics that principally treat underserved patients; and, best practices to slow or stop the spread of infectious organisms in community hospitals. Furthermore, clinical research at our international mission sites includes improved screening methods to detect parasitic infections in patients who visit the clinics; improved pathogen identification to promote better treatment for those with parasitic infections; and, best practices for healthy living and disease prevention, for both the patients and the faculty, staff and students who visit the clinics for mission work. Other noteworthy achievements include the collaborative cancer and stem cell laboratory between VCOM and the Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute, located just a mile from the VCOM-Carolinas Campus. The newly renovated laboratory has 7,500 square feet of research space with an open floor design to maximize shared equipment resources and workspaces, allowing for easy interaction and collaboration of all laboratory personnel. Also, VCOM hosted a conference in collaboration with the Gibbs Cancer Center and NASA officials to discuss research opportunities (e.g., stem cell biology, disease modeling, tissue engineering) on the International Space Station that may lead to advances in cancer treatment and care.Description

DescriptionInternational mission experiences begin in the first year of medical school with on-campus electives in Medical Spanish and the Global Health Seminar. Second-year medical students participate in one week trips to Honduras, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic. These trips provide students with experience in public and environmental health, helping them to understand the conditions that exist under such poor socioeconomic conditions. These medical mission experiences are a key component in teaching students about the team approach to providing healthcare. In the fall of 2012, medical students from the VCOM - Carolinas Campus traveled to the Dominican Republic for the first time, providing primary care in remote villages where many Haitian immigrants work as day laborers. Also, VCOM enhanced the services offered in the Dominican Republic clinic by assisting in the construction of a new Emergency Room, providing a prenatal ultrasound device, investing in a new patient record system, a new waiting area for general patients, and a separate waiting area for pediatric patients awaiting immunizations. In El Salvador, VCOM partnered with the Asociacion Amigos para Latinoamerica (AMILAT) to offer new primary care services in a community clinic. The clinic was built through donations to AMILAT, and VCOM has helped equip the clinic. In October 2012, students from the Virginia Campus provided patient-centered care to remote villages in El Salvador and to the four orphanages that receive year-round support from VCOM. In December 2012, Post-Baccalaureate students experienced a mission trip to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, where faculty and students conducted public health education programs for citizens by visiting the USAID feeding centers for school children. In the Spring of 2013, Carolinas Campus medical students and clinical faculty, along with residents from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, provided care in a remote village in the Santa Rosa region of Honduras. In fiscal year 2012-13, VCOM sponsored a total of eight week-long mission trips to the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Honduras, involving 152 students, 14 VCOM faculty members, and 41 volunteers that resulted in attending to 3,454 patients. Domestic missions or outreach achievements include a partnership between two student organizations (Student National Medical Association and Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association) at the VCOM-Carolinas Campus to host a health and wellness fair in November to educate the greater Spartanburg community about healthy lifestyle practices and introduce community members to free and affordable, local health related resources; a partnership with the Blacksburg chapter of AARP to assist in providing health screening to AARP members; participation in two days of emergency response training by second-year students at VCOM-Carolinas Campus related to the use of weapons of mass destruction and radioactive attacks; participation by VCOM-Virginia Campus faculty and medical students in local free clinics each Friday; and, sponsorship of the fifth Mini-Med school for high school students in Appalachia which focuses on preventing high risk behaviors.Description

IdentifierIdentifierExplanationExplanation
Part X, line 2The College has analyzed filing positions in all of the federal and state jurisdictions where it is required to file income tax returns, including its status as a tax exempt entity. The only periods subject to examination for federal and state tax returns are for taxable years ended June 30, 2010 through June 30, 2013. The College believes its income tax filing positions, including its status as a tax exempt entity, will be sustained on audit and does not anticipate any adjustments that will result in a material change to its financial position. Therefore, no reserves for uncertain tax positions, nor interest and penalties, have been recorded in these financial statements.
Part XI line 4bThis Amount represents $50,349,200 in financial assistance received from the U.S. department of education not included in revenue in the Financial Statements. This amount also includes $120,432 of internal scholarships awarded by VCOM, which is presented as a reduction of revenue in the financial statements.
Part XII line 4bThe financial statements do not include the $50,349,200 of federal financial assistance paid to eligible students. Additionally, the $120,432 of internal scholarships paid to eligible students are netted against revenue in the financial statements. Lastly, this line includes $4 of rounding differences.
Part XII Line 2dThe Financial Statements include a reversal of a pledge in the amount of $230,447.
