DescSelby Gardens' Education Department is charged with engaging every visitor in Selby Gardens' mission and story. Selby Gardens educators strive to inspire a passion for nature and to help visitors to understand the importance of plants in their everyday lives. The Education Department continues to roll out new programs after the opening of the Ann Goldstein Children's Rainforest Garden (AGCRG) in November, 2013. This new outdoor exhibition, a simulated tropical rainforest, serves as both a self-guided environmental education experience for visitors and families and as an outdoor classroom where students engage in hands-on learning. The Children's Rainforest Garden teaches visitors about biodiversity, the physical structure of the rainforest habitat, the lives of people indigenous to rainforests, and the importance of plants as sources of food, medicine, and raw materials, as well as the irreplaceable role they play in our planet's natural systems. It is a game-changer for environmental education at the Gardens, transforming the way in which Selby shares its collections and tells its story. In the coming fiscal year, the Education Department will begin spreading the interpretive techniques introduced in the AGCRG to other locations throughout the Gardens. The Education Department has a wide variety of responsibilities, including the school field studies program; creation and oversight of signage, exhibitions (including art exhibits), and other interpretive elements; oversight of the guides program, which includes museum docents, tour guides, walk & talk guides, school guides, and conservatory guides; community classes; non-school programs for children including Little Sprouts, a monthly program to engage preschoolers with nature, Kids Corner, and summer camp; and lectures, the internship program, and other education programs.Educators continue to increase outreach to the community, serving 47% more school visitors in FY2014. They worked closely with local nonprofits and Title I schools as well as creating specialized programs for special needs children from Oak Park School and Fruitville Elementary's autistic program, Head Start, Easter Seals, and others.Overall participation in Selby Gardens' education programs was up 30% over the previous year, with increases across virtually every education program offered. The education department also mounted a variety of art exhibitions, including "Tropical Splendor," an exhibition of garden paintings by Anna Mason of the U.K. and Sarasota's Tom Stephens, and the popular "Rainforest Masks of Costa Rica" exhibition, featuring masks created by Costa Rican Indians from the village of Boruca, with whom Selby Gardens has a long-standing partnership.Desc

DescSelby Gardens' Horticulture Department shares the wonder and beauty of a rich, varied, and often extremely rare collection of tropical plants with visitors. Horticulturists care for and display the Gardens' living collections, comprised of outdoor displays covering some 15 acres and eight greenhouses filled with rare orchids, bromeliads, gesneriads, ferns, aeroids, and other accessioned plants. Selby Gardens' living collection has been developed as a result of more than 200 research expeditions and through partnerships with institutions around the globe. It is widely used for research by our own botanists and by visiting scientists from a large array of universities, scientific organizations, and other institutions. The collection includes more than 20,000 plants from 5,000+ species, representing nearly half the plant families found on Earth; about 40% of the living collection is wild-collected, and approximately a third enjoys protected status. The Gardens is widely recognized as having the world's most comprehensive, scientifically-documented collection of living epiphytes (plants that live upon other plants without parasitizing the host), and Gardens horticulturists must be skilled at nurturing a wide variety of plants, many of them extremely difficult to grow outside their native habitats. In addition to caring for this diverse collection, over the last year Selby Gardens horticulturists not only planted and opened the new Ann Goldstein Children's Rainforest Garden; they also piloted a new series of plant exhibitions in the Gardens' Tropical Conservatory, renovated and expanded the succulent garden, and completed plans for a new native plants exhibition along the shoreline. Horticulturists also gave lectures and taught classes, wrote articles, assisted in volunteer training, and participated in several botanical research and inventory expeditions, including an expedition to a the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, where they helped to rescue a dwindling population of Florida's largest native epiphyte, Tillandsia utriculata.Selby Gardens horticulturists have a major impact on interpretation of Selby Gardens' collection. The Horticulture Director works directly with the Director of Education to create and disseminate accurate information about the living collection, and he has been a major resource for school curricula, signage, plant exhibitions, and other education programs. The Horticulture Department also works hand-in-hand with project contractors to develop appropriate planting plans for large projects such as the Ann Goldstein Children's Rainforest Garden (such as the design and placement of plant pockets for epiphytic plants on the faux rock fixtures) and to advise on measures necessary to protect the existing landscaping, especially the banyan trees and Moreton Bay Fig, that are included in or adjacent to the new garden.Desc

DescSelby Gardens' Botany Department is respected internationally for its expertise, notably in regard to epiphytes (plants that live upon other plants). The Gardens' botanists are especially valued as top-notch taxonomists (scientists who identify and classify plants, a discipline which requires decades of study to master) and as field botanists who not only work in laboratories but regularly organize and participate in botanical expeditions in the wild. The Botany Department cares for the Gardens' preserved plant collections-an herbarium with some 107,000 documented dried specimens and the world's second largest spirit collection, more than 28,000 orchids and other flowers preserved in alcohol-as well as information resources including a 7,000 volume research library, thousands of images, and a comprehensive set of more than 20,000 files documenting the plant species in which Selby Gardens specializes: orchids, bromeliads, and gesneriads. These resources are regularly consulted by visiting scientists from major institutions and universities around the world including the Smithsonian, Kew Gardens, and Missouri Botanical Garden. The botany department also manages three research centers: the Orchid Research Center, the Gesneriad Research Center, and the Bromeliad Research Center. The knowledge and collections resident in the Botany department are a major resource for Selby Gardens' programs of education and horticultural display, as well. Botanists provide resources and information used in school curricula, exhibitions, and other programs as well as interpretive programs such signage and the docent and tour guide programs. The Gardens' unique living collection, much of it assembled on research expeditions by Selby botanists, is a major source for the beautiful and fascinating plant exhibitions found throughout the Gardens, including within the storied Tropical Conservatory, one of the highlights of the Selby Gardens experience.During the FY2014 fiscal year, Selby Gardens botanists conducted research and collecting expeditions to Brazil's Atlantic Forest, Costa Rica, and Belize, adding important new accessions to the preserved and greenhouse collections. Selby botanists also lectured at more than a dozen venues internationally, and botanist Bruce Holst served as faculty at the prestigious Organization for Tropical Studies' Tropical Plant Systematics course in Costa Rica. The Botany Department published a new issue of Selbyana, Selby Gardens' peer-reviewed scientific journal, and Gardens botanists published articles in a variety of recognized scientific journals. Botany staff visited the Everglades to check on the status of native orchids and ferns propagated at Selby Gardens and reintroduced by Gardens staff into the Park to bolster dwindling populations. The Botany department also spearheaded Selby Gardens' participation in the rescue of endangered native bromeliads from Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park and conducted the botanical inventories of environmentally sensitive lands in Sarasota and Manatee counties.Desc

Part III, Line 1a:The Gardens' collections, including herbarium specimens, living specimens (donated, grown, and collected) and donated books, are not recognized on the statement of financial position. The specimen and rare book collections, which are held for educational, research, scientific and curatorial purposes, are substantial and determination of value is not practical. The collections are catalogued, preserved and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously.
Part X, Line 2:Management has evaluated the effect of an accounting standard relating to accounting for uncertainty in income taxes. Management has determined that the Center had no uncertain income tax positions that could have a significant effect on the financial statements for the year ended June 30, 2014. The Center's federal income tax returns for the years ended 2013, 2012 and 2011 are subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service, generally for three years after the federal income tax returns were filed.
