| Desc | Solar Cookers International continued to spread solar cooking knowledge in regions of the world where fuel is scarce and sunlight is plentiful. Working with community-based project partners in East Africa (Kenya) and Asia (Nepal), people living in areas of great poverty and fuel scarcity are learning to solar cook and being provided with solar cooking and water pasteurization devices that can reduce the burden of human diseases caused by thick cooking smoke and contaminated drinking water. In this fiscal year, 945 households in Kisumu, Kenya, a region of extreme poverty, received Safe Water Packages with SCIs support (a CooKit solar cooker, which can save up to 19 kg (41 lbs) of fire wood per week of use; a cooking pot with lid; an upesi jiko improved combustion stove which can reduce fire wood use by up to 40%; a water pasteurization indicator; a specially-designed jar to hold pasteurized water; and a retained-heat cooker, which insulates a cooking pot to continue the cooking process for 4 6 hours with no added fuel.) SCI organizes and leads the Solar Cookers International Network, which includes 500+ member organizations worldwide working on solar cooker projects, designs, research, advocacy, and education. SCI supports the worlds largest and most comprehensive solar cooking resource, www.solarcooking.org, which receives a quarter million page visits per month. Through its ECOSOC special consultative status at the United Nations, where solar cooking is a quick fix for the Millennium Development Goals, SCI contributes to the Post-2015 development agenda. SCI continues to provide leadership and resources for 500+ solar cooking organizations worldwide in the fields of solar cooking research, designs, standards, evaluation, advocacy, and project implementation. | Desc |
