| Description | Collections and research: Scientists from around the world visit the Museum to study its collections for research purposes. The Museum holds the largest human skeletal collection in the world, which is particularly valuable to medical device companies. During fiscal year 2013, the Museum's curators pursued research and fieldwork in CANADA, COSTA RICA, ETHIOPIA, PERU, RWANDA AND MANY LOCAL OHIO sites. The Museum's conservation efforts include discovery and documentation of rare plant species and acquisition of land containing rare habitats. During 2013, the museum protected almost 1,600 acres of land through conservation efforts. | Description |

| FIN 48 (ASC 740) Footnote | Part X, Line 2 | The Museum adopted the provisions of FASB ASC 740-10-25 (formerly FIN 48 "Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes"), which prescribes a recognition threshold and a measurement attribute for the financial statement recognition and measurement of tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. For those benefits to be recognized, a tax position must be more-likely-than-not to be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities. The amount recognized is measured as the amount of benefit that is greater than 50% likely of being realized upon ultimate settlement. The Museum recognizes interest and penalties accrued, if any, related to unrecognized tax uncertainties in income tax expense. The Museum determined that there are no material uncertain tax positions.
