DescResearch involves three generalized categories-biomedical sciences, clinical and educational, or improving student learning. Biomedical, or basic science, research involves investigating health-related issues most often using non-human models, such as animals or cell cultures, in an effort to lay foundations for advancements in medical knowledge and to answer questions about the basic mechanisms and pathways involved in specific diseases. Clinical research investigates the safety and effectiveness of drugs, devices, diagnostic products, and treatment regimens intended for human use, which may be used for prevention, treatment, diagnosis, or for relieving symptoms of a disease. VCOM's clinical research program focuses largely on behavioral medicine, disease prevention, health education, and the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, specifically those prevalent in underserved and rural areas of Appalachia as well as throughout the country. A specific area of clinical research is VCOM's sports medicine research program, which focuses on sports-related injury prevention, the implementation of therapeutic interventions, and educational program development. Educational research and outreach programs at VCOM encompass the development of best practices to help students excel in their academic work, as well as help provide health-related services to underserved communities both at home and abroad. Many VCOM faculty members in both clinical and biomedical areas are active in educational research and community outreach programs, most often working in teams. The majority of educational research is with the Standardized Patient program at the Simulation and Technology Centers at both the Virginia and the Carolinas campuses. Translational research transforms discoveries from biomedical and laboratory studies into clinical applications with the goal of reducing morbidity and mortality from specific diseases and conditions. Translational research often involves team-based projects, where both biomedical researchers and physicians work together to find practical applications. Translational medical research aims to move from "bench to bedside," or from laboratory experiments to diagnostic tools, medicines, procedures, and education. Current Biomedical research projects include wound healing and bone regeneration in vivo, therapeutics for autoimmune diseases such as lupus, therapeutic use of nanoparticles in those with blinding diseases, such as macular degeneration, Cerium oxide nanoparticles in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, early detection and treatment of blast-induced mild traumatic brain injury, correlation between strict blood glucose control and length of hospitalization, role of the immune system in inflammatory bowel disease, understanding the nature of immune responses to cancers and infectious agents, adult stem cell research and stem cell markers for colon cancer, utilizing stem cells for regenerative medicine, sensory information contribution to changes in neural activity, effects of microgravity upon immune function and tumor growth, respiratory syncytial virus and healthcare-associated infection prevention and treatment, and identification of novel drug targets for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders and stroke. Current Clinical research projects include traumatic brain injury in both the civilian and military populations, head impact structural and functional changes using magnetic resonance imaging, correlation between head acceleration impact tolerances and clinical outcomes associated with mild traumatic brain injury, comparison of asthma medications in pediatric patients, use of prealbumin levels to assess nutrition support in a pediatric intensive care unit, early diagnosis and treatment improving the outcome and preventing complications in Kawasaki disease, brown adipose tissue activation and therapeutic effects on obesity and obesity-associated diseases, and quality of life and daytime sleepiness among osteopathic medicine residents. Current Sports Medicine research projects include examining concussion data in college sports to improve concussion databases, studying high school football coach concussion awareness and sideline medical coverage, detecting clinically significant cardiac abnormalities with pre-participation ECGs in college athletes, chemosensory evaluation of training and oxidative stress in runners, examining the effectiveness of iron supplements and diet change on ferritin levels among female Division I athletes, and researching the effect of concussion on postural stability among NCAA Division I College Athletes. Current educational research projects include evaluation of the use of email board review questions as an effective system for medical education and board preparation, assessment of the effectiveness of a research course preparing post-baccalaureate students for research and scholarly activities, investigation of the effects of study habits on blood pressure among post-baccalaureate students, measurement of the impact of VCOM outreach programs in underserved populations where our graduates will practice, and development of understanding how intrinsic motivation impacts academic performance. Additionally, current educational research projects in the Simulation and Technology Centers include examination of the effects of physical touch on patient satisfaction in a standardized patient model, comparison of pediatric intensive care units vs. emergency room staff in management of croup cases during mock code exercises, comparison of emergency medical technicians' and paramedics' care competency training using simulation technology, and investigation of fetal and maternal assessment in rural Dominican (Republic) areas utilizing bedside sonography. Moreover, in VCOM's Human Tissue Plastination Center, cadaver organs are converted into non-perishable, hard plastic models through a process involving fixation and dehydration. These models are then used for student education and research. Research projects involve examination of the efficacy of plastinated tissue as an aid for standard anatomical education and assessing these models alongside traditional anatomy laboratory tables. Current projects Involving international mission sites include prevention of disease through clean water by assessing current water supply systems to formulate clean water research, education, and water improvement projects; assessment of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and attitudes towards HPV so that educational interventions can be designed for women; assessment of community knowledge before and after presentations on hygiene, nutrition, oral health, and substance abuse; community and environmental risk assessment through door-to-door observations and interviews to determine critical risks to human health so that clinical and public health interventions can be formulated; promotion of best practices for healthy living by analyzing patient charts of disease states to formulate community and clinical interventions; improvement of patient care through screening, pathogen identification, and patient charting for prevention, treatment, and follow up; and, promotion of the World Health Organization's international health standards, which are implemented and measured at international clinical sites. There have been three notable awards VCOM has received in the past year. In late summer 2013, VCOM began a clinical trial managed by Banyan Biomarkers and sponsored by the Department of Defense. This trial is evaluating the utility of a specific biomarker as an aid in the evaluation of patients with suspected traumatic brain injury. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant public health problem representing a potentially catastrophic and debilitating medical emergency. The current standard of care has significant limitations, and many patients who suffer TBI do not receive medical care because the effects of TBI are often not immediately or outwardly visible. A biomarker test for TBI has the potential to greatly improve the triage and management of head injured patients and prevent the unnecessary use of neuroimaging and radiation exposure to patients. Another research project, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, is examining the role of cerium oxide nanoparticles in the treatment of traumatic brain injury, using a rat model. In collaboration with the VandeVord laboratory from the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest School of Biomedical Engineering, the group has found that cerium oxide nanoparticles can be used to improve motor recovery, neurobehavioral outcomes, and learning and memory after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The nanoparticles work by blocking oxidative stress in the brain, improving mitochondrial function and promoting neuronal survival and recovery. This work may help usher in a new wave of nanopharmaceuticals for the treatment of numerous diseases. The third research project iDesc

DescThe Appalachian and International Outreach programs at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) provide thoughtfully planned opportunities for students to serve the community while benefiting from these patient centered experiences. The international and Appalachian medical outreach trips are opportunities for students to nurture their commitment to serve those who have fewer resources and to strengthen their compassion and cultural competency through patient care. The outreach trips and rotations provide students with hands-on, problem-based, learning experiences in a real world setting, where they develop skills that cannot be learned in the classroom. In the 2013-2014 academic year, VCOM won several national awards, being recognized as one of two medical schools nationally to receive the United States Presidential Honor Roll Award for Outreach. Additionally, VCOM again received the Minority Access Inc. National Award this year for outstanding accomplishments internationally and mentorship of underrepresented minorities. A student conducting research in the Dominican Republic along with faculty received first place honors from the Bureau on International Osteopathic Medical Association and Affairs (BIOMEA) at the AOA convention. VCOM recently has formed partnerships with the Appalachian School of Pharmacy and the Presbyterian College's School of Pharmacy who will provide pharmaceutical support for the VCOM clinics and outreach trips. Additionally, expanding alumni participation has helped to strengthen the global effects of VCOM's international and Appalachian outreach. Student participation for international medical mission trips surged in 2013-2014 at both the Carolinas Campus and the Virginia Campus. Almost 70% of the second year classes, a total of 240 students, participated in international mission trips. Of this number, 121 medical students were from the Carolinas Campus, and 119 medical students were from the Virginia Campus. Also, forty-four (44) Post Baccalaureate students participated in international mission trips. During the 2013-2014 academic year, a total of 56 medical students from VCOM's Virginia Campus traveled to Vern, Dominican Republic on two outreach trips. During each trip, students provided free medical care to the surrounding communities, setting up pop-up tents for clinics at schools, churches, and villages in the area. Medical students from the VCOM - Virginia and Carolinas Campuses and the Post-Baccalaureate program made four outreach trips to El Salvador in 2013-2014. During each week-long trip, VCOM students provided medical attention for patients in local villages, community clinics, orphanages, and schools through the VCOM longitudinal and sustainable community health program. In addition to providing medical care, VCOM faculty and students led First Responder workshops. Post Baccalaureate students led educational sessions and learning activities on health and wellness throughout their week-long trip, focusing on the needs of local children and adults. One hundred six (106) VCOM students participated in four outreach trips to El Salvador. During the 2013-2014 year, students from the VCOM-Virginia and Carolinas Campuses and the Post-Baccalaureate Program participated in seven outreach trips to Honduras. A total of 147 VCOM students visited rural Santa Rosa de Copan and Tegucigalpa, riding on a big green school bus and providing care for the surrounding communities. Outreach trips to Honduras covered a wide variety of emphasis areas, from primary care to surgery and women's health to first responder training. Students traveled to villages, community clinics, schools, and orphanages to provide care for those in need. Also, VCOM faculty and staff also held First Responder workshops to teach lifesaving techniques to students at Baxter Institute who will return to 12 different countries in Central and South America. Students from the Post Baccalaureate program also led educational sessions and learning activities for local children and adults during their outreach trip, focusing on health and wellness. One hundred forty seven (147) VCOM students participated in seven outreach trips to Honduras. VCOM participates in a variety of annual community health events across the Appalachian region, a number of which are organized by students and faculty members. In the 2013-2014 academic year, the Virginia Campus participated in more than ten community health education and screening events, including biannual screenings at the Roanoke Rescue Mission, the AARP Health Fair, and eleven mini medical schools. The Carolinas Campus hosted a wide variety of events, including the Kid's Wellness Fair, Community Health Fair and D.O. Young Scholars Educational Camp. Students and faculty from the Carolinas Campus also participated in monthly outreach at local clinics, soup kitchens, churches, and schools. Because of VCOM's commitment to serving the medically underserved across the Appalachian region, patients who normally lack access to care can rely on regular health screenings and continuing education about health-related issues. Additionally, these experiences allow VCOM students to grow as physicians, developing a deeper appreciation for providing care to those in need.Desc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Part X, line 2The College has analyzed filing positions in all of the federal and state jurisdictions where it is required to file income tax returns, including its status as a tax exempt entity. The only periods subject to examination for federal and state tax returns are for taxable years ended June 30, 2011 through June 30, 2014. The College believes its income tax filing positions, including its status as a tax exempt entity, will be sustained on audit and does not anticipate any adjustments that will result in a material change to its financial position. Therefore, no reserves for uncertain tax positions, nor interest and penalties, have been recorded in these financial statements.
PART XI LINE 4BTHIS LINE REPRESENTS $59,819,648 IN FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE RECEIVED FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION NOT INCLUDED IN REVENUE IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. THIS AMOUNT ALSO INCLUDES $60,275 OF INTERNAL SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED BY VCOM, WHICH IS PRESENTED AS A REDUCTION OF REVENUE IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.
Part XII line 4bThe Financial Statements do not include the $59,819,648 of FEDERAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PAID TO ELIGIBLE STUDENTS. additionallY, THE $60,275 OF INTERNAL SCHOLARSHIPS PAID TO ELIGIBLE STUDENTS ARE NETTED AGAINST REVENUE IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. LASTLY, THIS LINE INCLUDES $1 OF ROUNDING DIFFERENCES.
Part XII Line 2dThe Financial Statements include a reversal of a pledge in the amount of $213,927.
