| Desc | Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc. (SALA) was able to provide direct civil legal assistance to meet the fundamental human needs of more than 23,091 low income individuals and families in 8,182 cases and matters.Services included safety and protection for children and women who are victimized by domestic violence; preservation of shelter for those wrongfully evicted from their homes; protection for those facing foreclosure; access to food stamps for people who were in need of food security; access to long-term health care for those denied services; a means to survive for disabled persons who are unable to obtain government benefits; access to debtor relief for the protection of income and property and a means to survive for disabled persons who are unable to obtain benefits from the Social Security Administration. The impact of services provided resulted in recovery of $3,775,985 in lump sum benefits and money judgments; $140,767 in monthly awards and clients avoided $737,848 in garnishments and court judgments. For every $1 invested in Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc., $7.92 of actual value is returned to the community.Out of the total cases handled by SALA, 3,153 were handled by volunteer lawyers and law students participating in SALAs Volunteer Lawyers Program. The volunteer attorneys and students donated 2,812 hours of free civil legal services valued at $562,400.In addition, SALA raised community awareness of individual legal rights and responsibilities by teaching clients how to use the law and legal system to prevent legal problems and self-help in accessing the courts. SALA made presentations and distributed brochures and self-help materials to 1,700 individuals. | Desc |
