| Desc | DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR CASA OF SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY HELD FIVE THIRTY HOUR TRAINING SESSIONS FOR NEW RECRUITS. TRAINING SUBJECTS INCLUDE MANDATED REPORTER TRAINING, THE EFFECTS OF DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE AND VIOLENCE ON CHILDREN AND FAMILIES, DEPENDENCY LAW, CHILD DEVELOPMENT, AND WRITING COURT REPORTS. 46 VOLUNTEERS WERE TRAINED AND SWORN IN BY THE JUVENILE COURT JUDGE. 45 VOLUNTEERS TOOK THEIR FIRST CASE DURING THIS PERIOD AS WELL. DURING THIS PERIOD OUR VOLUNTEERS DONATED MORE THAN 17,000 HOURS AND 98,000 MILES TO THEIR CASA DUTIES. EACH VOLUNTEER WAS SUPERVISED BY A STAFF ADVOCATE SUPERVISOR WHO SUPERVISES NO MORE THAN 30 VOLUNTEERS. THE VOLUNTEERS BEGAN THEIR ASSIGNMENTS WITH A REVIEW OF ALL THE AVAILABLE INFORMATION CONCERNING THAT CHILD, INCLUDING REPORTS FROM SOCIAL WORKERS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT (WITH STRICT CONFIDENTIALITY). THE CASA IS ASSIGNED TO THAT CHILD (OR SIBLING GROUP) UNTIL THAT CASE IS RESOLVED IN COURT, WHICH AVERAGES 1.7 YEARS ON OUR CASELOAD. THE CASA PREPARES A COURT REPORT PRIOR TO EACH HEARING. THIS REPORT CONTAINS OBJECTIVE, RELEVANT INFORMATION AND MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE CHILD'S BEST INTERESTS INCLUDING REUNIFICATION WITH PARENTS, PLACEMENT AND PLAN FOR PERMANENCY, MEDICAL NEEDS, MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND EDUCATIONAL CONCERNS. THE JUVENILE COURT JUDGE REVIEWS THE CASA REPORTS AND MAY ASK THE ADVOCATE FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND SET ADDITIONAL REVIEW DATES FOR RECEIPT OF THAT INFORMATION. THE CASA VOLUNTEER OFTEN PROVIDES INFORMATION NOT AVAILABLE TO THE COURT (I.E. OBSERVATIONS ON RELATIONSHIPS, ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, BEHAVIOR THAT MAY WARRANT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES OR COUNSELING, IDENTIFY SERVICES THAT ARE NEEDED), WHICH ELIMINATES DECISIONS MADE BY JUDGES BASED ON INCOMPLETE DATA. THE CASA VOLUNTEER PROVIDES AN UNBIASED EXTRA SET OF EYES ON THE CHILD IN AN OVERBURDENED SYSTEM. CHILDREN REQUIRE MORE THAN SAFETY AND SHELTER WHILE THEY ARE IN FOSTER CARE. THEIR NEEDS ARE OFTEN QUITE COMPLICATED, WITH ISSUES RANGING FROM THE TRAUMA INHERENT IN ABUSE AND NEGLECT, REMEDIAL EDUCATION NEEDS AND OVERLOOKED HEALTH CONCERNS. CASA ADVOCACY HELPS ENSURE ACCESS TO APPROPRIATE HEALTH, MENTAL HEALTH AND DENTAL SERVICES. ADDITIONALLY, CASAS PROVIDE EXCELLENT ROLE MODELS FOR THE CHILDREN. WITH NUMEROUS STUDIES DOCUMENTING THE POSITIVE IMPACT THAT MENTORING HAS ON REDUCING NEGATIVE BEHAVIORS, INCLUDING SUBSTANCE ABUSE, VIOLENCE, SCHOOL FAILURE, GANG PARTICIPATION AND DELINQUENCY, THE CASAS POSITIVE AND CLOSE RELATIONSHIP TO THE CHILDREN IS ESSENTIAL. THROUGH THEIR WEEKLY VISITS, CASAS PROVIDE A CONSISTENT ADULT FRIEND THAT INFLUENCES THE CHILD'S ABILITY TO MAKE APPROPRIATE CHOICES, TO FORM POSITIVE AND TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS AND BEHAVE RESPONSIBLY. ADVOCATE'S INTERACTIONS WITH THEIR CASA CHILD HELP TO EMPOWER THE CHILD TO OVERCOME THE NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR ABUSE AND NEGLECT. CASA HELPED TO ENSURE THAT CHILDREN DID NOT GET LOST IN THE SYSTEM AND BROUGHT CHILDREN'S NEEDS AND CIRCUMSTANCES TO THE ATTENTION OF THE JUVENILE COURT SO THAT NEEDED SERVICES WERE ORDERED. OUR DEDICATED AND TALENTED VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY ADVOCACY FOR ABUSED AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN WITHIN STANDARDS MANDATED BY THE NATIONAL CASA ORGANIZATION. BY ADVOCATING IN COURT AND THE COMMUNITY FOR THE CHILD'S BEST INTEREST, CASAS HELP TO CREATE A SAFE CHILD'S LIFE UNTIL THE CASE IS RESOLVED IN COURT, WHILE ALSO ACTING AS A FRIEND AND MENTOR.
