DescEduCare's objectives include empowering schools, school districts, youth-serving agencies, teachers, parents and the young people themselves, in low income communities to better serve youth and prepare them to lead healthy, fulfilling lives by operating educational programs that integrate life skills and leadership development; at-risk intervention programs; after school program management; professional staff teambuilding / community building; student peer mentoring; community service; cross-age mentoring; peer mediation and conflict resolution; and parent education and involvement. Founded in June 1990, EduCare works with community and school based educational partners to empower students to achieve excellence in personal, social and academic pursuits through integrated education programs for children, youth and adults. For the past 25 years, EduCare has served youth by assisting young people in becoming high achievers; promoting healthy relationships in the home and in the community; and preventing destructive social behaviors like substance abuse, violence and crime. The largest population that EduCare continues serving is Los Angeles Unified School District ("LAUSD") high school and middle school students through the LAUSD / Beyond the Bell (BTB) After School Program. LAUSD, which is the second largest school district in the nation, is an urban district that largely consists of economically and socially disadvantaged minority students. EduCare's flagship program offering is its ACE (Achievement and Commitment to Excellence) Program. The ACE Programs are engaging, activity-driven, three-day student success programs that focus on building an essential foundation for learning: 1. Character development - confidence building, positive decision-making, and constructive choices 2. Personal management - personal responsibility, accountability, and time management 3. Emotional intelligence - managing anger, fear, rejection, and peer pressure 4. Interpersonal skills - communication, conflict resolution, and team building EduCare currently provides its ACE Programs for LAUSD high schools and middle schools as part of the Beyond the Bell After School Program. The ACE Workshops are held on the high school or middle school campuses, at local community centers, or on local college campuses. EduCare also provides and manages the daily Afterschool Programs at fifteen of the LAUSD's high schools (Bell HS, Cesar Chavez Learning Academies, Diego Rivera Learning Complex, Downtown Magnet HS, Environmental and Social Policy Academy, Esteban Torres HS, Jordan HS, Lincoln HS, Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools, San Fernando HS, Sun Valley HS, Sylmar HS, Van Nuys HS, Washington Prep HS, and West Adams Prep HS), and one LAUSD middle school (Walnut Park MS-STEM Academy) providing positive alternatives to dropping out and gang involvement. Each is a Title I school; receiving federal funds allocated for low-income, educationally disadvantaged students generally eligible for the free/reduced price meal programs. All sixteen schools are comprised of 97.5%-99+% minority students. All of these LAUSD schools partnering with EduCare have English Language Learning Programs, and are comprised of 20-35% non-native English speaking students. Each school day, over 2,000 EduCare program students participate in a full menu of academic, enrichment, and physical recreation after school classes and clubs on their respective school campuses. Students themselves at each of the high school campuses select, create, and even help in teaching many of the programs offered. Tutoring and homework assistance, dance, intramural sports, robotics, culinary arts, graphic design, rock band, academic decathlon, computer labs, Korean language, open gym, journalism, CAHSEE / SAT prep, leadership clubs and college readiness are available to students. Research reported by LAUSD has shown (for school year '13-'14) significant gains for EduCare Program students in their daily school attendance and standardized test scores. For the past seven years, EduCare has worked with LAUSD / Beyond the Bell and two other citywide agencies (arc and !Mpact People) to develop a successful leadership campaign that is now at 42 LAUSD high schools and 37 LAUSD middle schools. The Take Action Leadership Campaign (TAC) includes training and coaching high school and middle school leadership teams to run civic events such as "Denim Day" (anti-violence against women), "Kick Butts Day" (smoking cessation), and arts (dance, music, art, poetry) competitions on their campuses, as well as providing leadership training and camping weekends for these student leadership teams. In November 2010, the Take Action Campaign's four partnering organizations (BTB, EduCare, arc, and !Mpact People) were presented with the "Innovation in High School After School Collaboration and Partnerships" award by the California after school Network. Since 2012-13, EduCare, in collaboration with BTB, has helped develop an exciting pilot program for English language learners, Language in Action (LAP)- formerly the EL Access Program. LAP, currently offered by EduCare at 27 BTB high schools, provides an after school enrichment program to better prepare EL students for high school success and fuller participation in after school programs through a week-long after school LAP Immersion Week; a series of ten follow-up after school workshops to strengthen self-confidence, social skills, language development, and service learning; and a Saturday college visit and success skills workshop. EduCare also currently partners with BTB on an Anti-Smoking Initiative (TUPE); plus two stellar STEM Initiatives- a robotics program for student teams from six LAUSD high schools and the CyberPatriot program, sponsored by NASA, in which students from the Take Action Campaign high schools learn cyber security skills and then perform these skills in city, state and nationwide competitions. Additionally in the 2013-14 school year, EduCare: o Published independent research showing: o Students attending four years of EduCare after school programs were 21% more likely to graduate high school. o Students attending EduCare after school programs were 22% more likely to achieve a 96% regular school day attendance rate. o Students participating in EduCare after school programs were 7% more likely to pass the California High School Exit Exam ("CAHSEE") in English-language arts in 10th grade, and 10% more likely to pass the CAHSEE in mathematics in 10th grade. o English language learner students participating in EduCare after school programs were 9.3% more likely to be Re-designated as Fluent English Proficient (RFEP). o Recognized nationally as: o Best Practice in Dropout Prevention by Afterschool Alliance (D.C.) o Recognized statewide as: o Best Practice in Summer Programs for EduCare's ACE Program by Learning in After School (LIAS) Group (San Francisco). o EduCare's President, Stu Semigran, was appointed to the California AfterSchool Network (CAN) Leadership Team o Rated in LAUSD as one of the highest ranked After School Program agencies serving high school students by LAUSD's Beyond the Bell Branch. o Presented our highly rated, "Building Student Leaders with Vision and Heart" workshop at state and national educational conferences. o Built a team of dynamic, up and coming EduCare Program facilitators, several who are EduCare alumni from when they themselves participated in middle school and high school.Desc
