The following statistics and information also help illustrate the attainment of VCOM's mission: 62% of graduates entered primary care residencies during the past five years; 58% of graduates selected residencies in Appalachian states; 66% of alumni from the Classes of 2007 through 2011 choose to initially practice medicine in Appalachian states; 31% of alumni choose to practice in medically underserved areas; and, 100% of graduates that have entered the residency match during the past five years were selected for residencies. Also, a higher percentage of medical students from rural, Appalachian or medically underserved areas tend to practice in these areas upon completing their residencies. VCOM has recruited 65% of students from the southern Appalachian region, 22% of students are from a southern rural area, and 56% of students are from a southern underserved area. Secondly, physicians within under-represented minorities (URM's) have a much higher likelihood of caring for medically underserved populations. VCOM has matriculated an average of 13% of students classified as URM's. Moreover, the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) is the leading assessment organization for the osteopathic medical profession. Its mission is to protect the public by providing the means to assess competencies for osteopathic medicine and related health care professions. The NBOME COMLEX-USA examination series provides the pathway for licensure for osteopathic physicians in the United States, and is a graduation requirement for earning a D.O. degree from colleges of osteopathic medicine. In fiscal year 2015, VCOM students achieved passing rates of 90% or more in the COMLEX Level 1 through 3, and COMLEX Level 2, CE and PE. Finally, the Osteopathic Medical Network of Excellence in Education (OMNEE) began operations in 2008 to develop graduate medical education programs for VCOM graduates. OMNEE began with VCOM, three hospital members with specialties in traditional rotating internships, family medicine, internal medicine, neurosurgery; and one sports medicine fellowship. In six years of operation, OMNEE has grown to include 13 additional hospital members that offer positions in traditional rotating internship, family medicine, internal medicine, dermatology, neurosurgery, and emergency medicine. Also, college of osteopathic members have increased to include VCOM's branch campuses in Spartaburg, South Carolina, Auburn, Alabama, Campbell University's Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM) in Lillington, North Carolina, and Liberty University's College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) in Lynchburg, Virginia. In 2015, the OMNEE had 42 programs, 651 positions or residencies, and 249 first-year positions or residencies. Additional academic and educational achievements include assistance by VCOM faculty and students to provide sports medicine coverage for participants in the fourth annual PGA-sanctioned Greenbrier Classic; the intention to expand the college's sports medicine fellowships to Auburn University, the development of orthopedic residency program offering significant sports medicine experience to VCOM graduates at the Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital in Phenix City, Alabama; completion of construction of the third campus in Auburn, Alabama, with intent of matriculating the first class of 166 medical students in July 2015; and, an estimated economic impact of over $215 million in Alabama, South Carolina and Virginia.Desc

DescResearch Activities: The long and productive partnership between the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) and Virginia Tech has resulted in multiple joint research programs funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), United States Department of Defense (DOD), and numerous other federal and private sponsors. Our collaborations cover a variety of research areas and novel, cutting edge techniques in reproductive development, autoimmune disease prevention, drug discovery for stroke recovery, and traumatic brain injury treatment for athletes and soldiers. The newest initiative set forth between VCOM and Virginia Tech is the Center for One Health Research, created and announced in early 2015. Designed as a collaborative research venture between VCOM and the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM), the Center will promote joint VCOM-VMRCVM research programs relevant for humans and animals. It will include the Veterinary College in Virginia and all three VCOM campuses, as well as joint research projects at the VCOM international mission sites. Center faculty will utilize research facilities and infrastructure at all locations for a wide variety of education and research programs conducted within the Center. A major feature of the Center will be the central involvement of VCOM and VMRCVM students in collaborative disease prevention, public health and global health research projects. And though VCOM and VMRCVM researchers have a long history of successful collaboration, they look forward to combined One Health research projects beginning as early as summer 2015. VCOM continues to strengthen its successful partnership with the Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute and Spartanburg Regional Health System. We are working with our partners at Gibbs to finalize the joint Stem Cell Research Facility, and our cooperative research programs continue to flourish. This year, VCOM and Gibbs have been involved in several joint research proposals based on novel cancer detection techniques. These research collaborations have resulted in grant submissions to the National Institutes of Health. The latest research has the potential of having a profound effect on the way cancer is diagnosed and treated in low to middle income countries. The Gibbs Center houses research data for VCOM's scientific and clinical faculty. During the year, VCOM maintained its research presence and collaborations at Converse College. Several of our researchers work in a fully operational animal lab facility located in Converse's Phifer Science Hall. Current work at this lab includes immunology and microbiology research in immunotherapeutics for cancer and lymphatic function in chronic inflammatory disorders such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. In 2012, Auburn University and VCOM began the development of a public/private partnership. A strategic commitment of this alliance will expand human biomedical research opportunities for the faculty and students at both schools. VCOM's partnership with Auburn University provides immediate research collaborations with Auburn's engineering, pharmacy, and veterinary schools, as well as nursing and kinesiology programs. Both Auburn and VCOM share research interests in bioengineering and human movement related to sports medicine, osteopathic medicine, and physical medicine therapies. To build a strong base for collaborative programs, both partners have committed internal seed funding for pilot projects in these research areas. In addition, our partnership with Auburn allows VCOM access to state-of-the-art medical equipment at Auburn University for our osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) research needs, including one of just twenty-eight 7-Tesla MRI systems in the United States. VCOM sports medicine physicians are nationally known for research programs and regular collaborations with scientists at Virginia Tech in biomedical engineering and at the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Sciences; their recognition continues to grow as VCOM develops partnerships at Auburn University. VCOM faculty will lead the profession in the treatment and prevention of sports injuries. Total expenditures to date for the VCOM-VT Sports Medicine related projects is over $1 million. Through our collaborative concussion research program, one of the best in the country, we are participating in the NCAA-Department of Defense(DOD) "Grand Alliance" as an Advanced Research Core School. The total approved budget amount for the NIH pediatric mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and the NCAADOD projects is $3,958,382 over the next five years. VCOM research has been instrumental in creating change that will prevent head injuries in the future, from improvement of helmets to findings that changed rules for youth football. Research at VCOM involves three generalized categories-biomedical sciences, clinical and educational, or improving student learning. Biomedical, or basic science, research involves investigating health-related issues most often using non-human models, such as animals or cell cultures, in an effort to lay foundations for advancements in medical knowledge and to answer questions about the basic mechanisms and pathways involved in specific diseases. Clinical research investigates the safety and effectiveness of drugs, devices, diagnostic products, and treatment regimens intended for human use, which may be used for prevention, treatment, diagnosis, or for relieving symptoms of a disease. VCOM's clinical research program focuses largely on behavioral medicine, disease prevention, health education, and the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, specifically those prevalent in underserved and rural areas of Appalachia as well as throughout the country. Educational research and outreach projects at VCOM encompass the development of best practices to help students excel in their academic work, as well as help provide health-related services to underserved communities both at home and abroad. Many VCOM faculty members in both clinical and biomedical areas are active in educational research and community outreach programs, most often working in teams. Translational research transforms discoveries from biomedical and laboratory studies into clinical applications with the goal of reducing morbidity and mortality from specific diseases and conditions. Translational research often involves team-based projects, where both biomedical researchers and physicians work together to find practical applications. Translational medical research aims to move from "bench to bedside, or from laboratory experiments to diagnostic tools, medicines, procedures, and education. Research projects at VCOM in fiscal year 2014-15 include the following: Biomedical Research conducted on the Virginia Campus 1) Blaise Costa, PhD a) Identifying molecular determinants of novel drug target in NMDA receptors. b) NMDA receptor subunit specific drug discovery. 2) Shaadi Elswaifi, PhD a) Histone deacetylase inhibitors and bacterial pathogenicity. DescOutreach Activities: VCOM first began its medical outreach program to developing countries in 2005. Among the first trips were assistance with the tsunami victims in India and global health outreach trips to El Salvador and to Africa. VCOM believes that in order to address the health issues in these developing countries, a sustained presence is required to address determinants of health. VCOM began to collaborate with the medical schools in each country the college serves, then established year-round, sustainable, primary care clinics with public health outreach programs, and assured approvals from the ministry of health in each country. Establishing this collaborative foundation allowed VCOM to focus on health related work and address the many public health, community health, and social determinants of poor health, as well as treat immediate patient needs. By 2007, VCOM had established sustainable clinics in Honduras, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic. Interested VCOM first and second year students may participate in one week international outreach trips. Third year students can participate in month long experiences with the sustainable clinics, and students in the dual degree tracks may spend up to one year working in the international setting. Medical outreach trips are opportunities for students to nurture their commitment to serve those who have fewer resources and to strengthen their compassion and cultural competency through patient care. The outreach trips and rotations provide students with hands-on, problem-based, learning experiences in a real world setting, where they develop skills that cannot be learned in the classroom. While VCOM facilitates both local and international outreach trips for the first and second year medical students, the college also provides immediate assistance after certain global emergencies such as floods, tornados, or hurricanes. In the Dominican Republic, VCOM provides a sustainable primary care clinic in Vern, a community of greater than 15,000. In 2005, prior to VCOM and the Punta Cana Foundation committing to this project, Vern was a community of 3,800 where no healthcare existed for the uninsured until you reached Higuey, a drive of about 50 minutes. Even in Higuey, the city was medically underserved and patients waited days for care. VCOM and Punta Cana Foundation committed the resources required to remodel an abandoned community health clinic and partnered with the Dominican government to provide clinical services. Today the clinic provides care for patients with HIV and TB, education on water purification, immunizations, primary care, pediatrics, prenatal care, and emergency services for some of the regions poorest and uninsured patients. The college has trained local volunteers to operate an ambulance donated by Punta Cana Foundation so patients may be transported to the hospital in Higuey. Also, the college conducts one week outreach trips to neighboring communities without healthcare, encouraging these patients to follow up with visits to the Vern Clinic. Other partners at this clinic include Punta Cana Ecological Foundation, the Appalachian College of Pharmacy, INTEC and UCE. In fiscal year ending June 30, 2015, VCOM supported two mission trips to this clinic involving 24 medical students and 17 students enrolled in the Post Baccalaureate program, whom under the supervisor of clinical faculty, physician volunteers, and clinic employees, assisted treating over 1200 patients. El Salvador is the first country where VCOM faculty and students provided care internationally. Today, VCOM helps to support resources for the Shalom Family Medical Center, a clinic and orphanage sponsored by Asociacion Amigos para Lationamerica (AMILAT) in Santa Toms, just outside of San Salvador, and to provide weekly care to two additional orphanages and to the mountain communities of Chalatenango and Sonsonate. Many would be without medical care if VCOM did not sponsor these VCOM's weekly clinics. Community and patient education on water contamination and proper water sanitation practices were provided to heads of household. Also, research on water quality and access, along with sanitation and related health risks based on World Health Organization (WHO) standards was conducted. Partners for this clinic include AMILAT, UEEC, the Ministry of Health, Presbyterian College of Pharmacy, and Decameron Resort. In fiscal year ending June 30, 2015, VCOM supported three mission trips to this clinic involving 57 medical students, whom under the supervisor of clinical faculty, physician volunteers, and clinic employees, assisted treating over 1000 patients. In Honduras, VCOM has partnered with Baxter Institute, a college of theology, located in Tegucigalpa, a city that suffers from dense population with community pockets burdened by poverty, lack of food and clean water, and limited healthcare resources. VCOM and the Baxter Institute support a year round clinic for the surrounding region, and a nutrition program for children. Primary care, surgery, women's health, public health education, and first responder training are emphasized on outreach trips to Honduras. As part of an ongoing project, prosthetic legs for three patients were fitted, and prostheses for seven others were casted. Also, health education on disease prevention, and proper water sanitation practices are taught to patients and residents served by clinic. The Baxter Institute also provides education not only for young ministers but also offers occupational education programs for the parents of children qualifying for the malnutrition program. Other partners include the National Medical School, Mission Upreach, the Ministry of Health, Presbyterian College of Pharmacy and the Appalachian School of Pharmacy. In fiscal year ending June 30, 2015, VCOM supported three mission trips to this clinic involving 119 medical students, whom under the supervisor of clinical faculty, physician volunteers, and clinic employees, assisted treating over 1700 patients. In the 2014-2015 academic year, VCOM won several national awards, being recognized as one of two medical schools nationally to receive the United States Presidential Honor Roll Award for Outreach. Additionally, VCOM again received the Minority Access Inc. National Award for outstanding accomplishments internationally and for mentorship of underrepresented minorities. The college also sponsors the Leading Global Health Seminar series that provides experiences and stories from leaders in the medical field on various issues of global health importance. This seminar series was attended by VCOM medical students, faculty, and staff, as well as associated members of the local community. The most recent seminar speaker, Peter Michaelson, DO, PhD, visited VCOM on October 14, 2014, to share his broad range of experience in practicing with a uniquely osteopathic point of view. Dr. Michaelson is an American physician practicing in Germany, with private practices in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Complementary Modalities in Munich, Germany, and Ft. Pierce, Florida. A graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, he also obtained a Doctor of Medicine (MD, PhD) at the University of Bern in Bern, Switzerland. Moreover, the college launched a live, interactive video conference lecture on tropical medicine by VCOM international faculty member, Dr. Rod Pena at the Evangelical University in El Salvador. This brings expertise of the school's global faculty into the United States campuses to complement VCOM's international medical outreach trips and rotations. Virginia Campus' second year students had the opportunity to learn more about tropical diseases dengue and chikungunya through Dr. Pena's lecture, while students in El Salvador contributed to the discussion with stories of recent patients who have suffered from these mosquito-borne illnesses. VCOM not only provides medical outreach internationally, but also locally. The Appalachian region is well served by the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the both the Carolinas and Virginia Campuses of the college. Underserved populations and rural regions are provided the opportunity to participate in health education and screening events, mini medical schools, health fairs, and local clinics, at which VCOM physicians and medical students volunteer. Some examples of Appalachian and Underserved Care outreach are provided below. The Blacksburg, Virginia Chapter of the AARP teams up with the college for health and wellness fairs, which are free to the public. At these fairs, commercial and non-profit exhibitions are featured, and vendors offering hearing, dermatology, and vein exams also are present. Second year VCOM students provide screenings for blood pressure and blood sugar, body mass and nutrition advice, cancer information, and stress management education. Flu shots are also available from separate providers. Funds raised go to the Blacksburg AARP ChapDesc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Part X, line 2The College and APCA have analyzed filing positions in all of the federal and state jurisdictions where they are required to file income tax returns, including the Colleges status as a tax-exempt entity. The only periods subject to examination for federal and state tax returns are for taxable years ended June 30, 2012 through June 30, 2015. The College and APCA believe their income tax filing positions, including the Colleges status as a tax-exempt entity, will be sustained on audit and do not anticipate any adjustments that will result in a material change to their financial position. Therefore, no reserves for uncertain tax positions, nor interest and penalties, have been recorded in these consolidated financial statements.
PART XI LINE 4BTHIS LINE REPRESENTS $73,889,081 IN FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE RECEIVED FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION NOT INCLUDED IN REVENUE IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. THIS AMOUNT ALSO INCLUDES $92,500 OF INTERNAL SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED BY VCOM, WHICH IS PRESENTED AS A REDUCTION OF REVENUE IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. THIS AMOUNT ALSO INCLUDES A $1,200 IN-KIND CONTRIBUTION RECOGNIZED AND CAPITALIZED FOR TAX PURPOSES. THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS RECORDED THIS CONTRIBUTION AS A BASIS REDUCTION TO THE NEW ASSET THAT THE CONTRUBITED PROPERTY WAS TRADED IN FOR. PROPERTY.
PART XII LINE 2BTHE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS REFLECT EXPENSES OF $1,665,077 WHICH RELATE TO PRIOR PERIOD ADJUSTMENTS REGARDING THE VALUATION OF VCOM'S INVESTMENT IN SUBSIDIARIES. THIS ADJUSTMENT HAS BEEN PROPERLY REFLECTED THROUGH VCOM'S NET ASSETS ON PART X. FURTHER, THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS INCLUDE INCOME OF $1,373,411 WHICH RELATES TO PRIOR PERIOD ADJUSTMENTS OF VCOM'S INVESTMENTS IN ITS DISREGARDED SUBSIDIARIES WHICH ARE INCLUDED IN FORM 990; THEREFORE, THE NET OF THESE AMOUNTS REPRESENT PRIOR YEAR ADJUSTMENTS RECORDED IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS THAT ARE NOT REFLECTED ON FORM 990.
