DescSee Schedule ORenown Regional Medical Center is an accredited, 808-licensed bed, general and acute-care hospital serving communities in northern Nevada, northeastern California and the adjacent areas of Oregon and Idaho. A not-for-profit hospital offering a full range of medical, diagnostic and ancillary services, Renown Regional provides the only designated Level II Trauma Center between Sacramento and Salt Lake City. It is a teaching facility for the professional development of the region's healthcare professionals. Renown Regional provides necessary healthcare services regardless of race, creed, sex, national origin, handicap, age or ability to pay. People in our community have access to Renown Regional services in specialties including cancer, heart, neurosciences, orthopedics, surgery, intensive care and women's and children's health. Renown Regional is governed by a board of community members, the majority of who live in our primary service area and who are neither employees, independent contractors or family members. Renown Regional extends privileges on its medical staff to all eligible and qualified physicians. All surplus funds are retained in the organization to make improvements in patient care, medical education and research. As part of an integrated health network, Renown Regional Medical Center provides many services to the community that otherwise would require that people travel to other cities to receive care. These programs, services and technology include a Level II Trauma Center, a pediatric intensive care unit, TomoTherapy High Art System and Varian TrueBeam, biplane angiography, a dedicated PET/CT scanner, Da Vinci Robotic Surgery, a Joint Commission-certified Primary Stroke Center, comprehensive amputee services, an ABRET-accredited Epilepsy Monitoring Lab, an Intersocietal Commission-accredited Echocardiography Lab, multi-specialty da Vinci Robotic Surgery Program and a Chest Pain Center using the D-SPECT heart camera. Renown Regional also offers access to the largest number of clinical research trials in the region. Renown Regional is comprised of the Medical Center and multiple Centers for Advanced Medicine. These house medical specialty and subspecialty practices. In partnership with the 783 physicians on its medical staff, Renown Regional offers more than 40 physician specialties, including cardiac surgery, cardiology, endocrinology, geriatrics, gynecologic oncology, infectious disease, neurosurgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pediatric anesthesia, pediatric endocrinology, pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric neurology, pediatric oncology and hematology, perinatology, plastic surgery, psychiatry, pulmonary medicine, radiation therapy, radiology, rheumatology and urology. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015, Renown Regional, along with its parent, Renown Health and its subsidiaries, provided more than $78 million in benefit to the community (using community benefit numbers gathered by the Nevada Hospital Association using state-approved criteria to ensure consistency). For a full report on the benefit Renown Health provided to our community as well as our needs assessment and community benefit plan go to www.renown.org/about-us/community.Desc

ExplanationRenown Regional Medical Center is organized as a Nevada nonprofit entity and has been recognized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as exempt from federal income taxes under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). In addition, Renown Regional Medical Center is subject to income tax on net income derived from business activities that are unrelated to its tax exempt purpose. Renown Regional Medical Center files an Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return (Form 990T) with the IRS to report any unrelated business taxable income. Renown Regional Medical Center believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken affecting its annual filing requirements, and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the combined financial statements. Renown Regional Medical Center would recognize future accrued interest and penalties related to unrecognized tax benefits and liabilities in income tax expense if such interest and penalties are incurred. Renown Regional Medical Center's Federal Form 990T filings are no longer subject to federal tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2012.ExplanationTxt

Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 5: Renown Health consulted several leading community organizations to determine the health status and needs of the surrounding community. The community organizations included Northern Nevada Medical Center, Saint Mary's Hospital, Washoe County Health District, and Healthy People Nevada Moving 2010 to 2020 report.
Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 6a: Renown South Meadows Medical Center and Renown Rehabiliation Hospital
Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 6b: Washoe County Health District
Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 11: Due to the Implementation Strategy being approved in June 2015, no specific actions have been taken in this fiscal year, but the following is what we intend to accomplish.Behavioral Health - We will invest in behavioral health resources "up-stream" so that we have fewer patients presenting at our Emergency Rooms "in crises". The expected outcomes are to increase the number of low-income residents accessing behavioral health services and decrease the number of adult and child ED visits for mental health crises.Childhood Immunizations - We will increase access points for children to receive vaccinations and collaborate with other community organizations to strengthen existing efforts. The expected outcomes are to increase the percentage of children (19-35 months) receiving full recommended vaccination and increase the percentage of school-age children receiving recommended vaccinations.Senior Flu Shot Outreach - Building on Renown's ACO flu shot outreach, we will target low-income and socially isolated seniors. Low income and isolated senior populations are at high risk of not receiving an annual flu shot and tend to be in poorer health when compared to the rest of the senior population. In addition, by attacking this preventive health shortcoming on two fronts, we have the opportunity to move the needle for the community. The expected outcome is an increase in percentage of seniors (65+) receiving flu vaccinations.Dental Care - Collaborate with local dental care providers, FQHCs, non-profits, WCSD, and dental hygiene schools to provide preventive non-emergent dental care to adults and children and consider investing in screening ultrasound. The expected outcomes are to decrease the number of adult and child ER visits due to dental health and increase the number of low-income community members accessing preventive dental care.Prenatal Care - Provide comprehensive prenatal care to low income mothers in our community. The expected outcomes are to decrease the number of low birth weight babies in Washoe County and to increase the number of low-income and minority mothers accessing prenatal care.Support Local Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) - One time grant to support local FQHC capital project to improve access for underserved populations. The expected outcome is to increase access to primary healthcare for uninsured and underinsured community members.Mammography Screening - Increase availability of mammography screenings for low-income senior women. The expected outcome is to increase the number of low-income and minority women who have had a screening in the last 2 years.Community Hub - Support Truckee Meadows Health Communities 89502 project, especially the Family Health Festivals, through funding and in-kind donations. The expected outcomes are to increase the number of low-income families and individuals in 89502 who can easily access social and healthcare services and increase the healthcare literacy of the 89502 community.Safe Kids & Child Passenger Safety Fitting Station - Renown Health will take over leadership and support of the Northern Nevada Child Passenger Safety Seat Fitting Station. The expected outcomes are to maintain a low number of children fatalities in motor vehicle accidents and decrease the number of children injuries in motor vehicle accidents.Partnership with Local Non-Profit - Partner with local non-profit to expand program focused on physical activity and social/emotional well-being to 500 girls grades 3rd-8th in Washoe County. The expected outcomes are to increase the number of Title I schools with programming and increase the percentage of adolescent girls in Washoe County meeting recommended physical activity levels.Healthy foods - Work with local partners to increase community gardens and healthy nutrition education in community. The expected outcomes are to increase healthy cooking skills of low-income families and increase community knowledge and life skills in regards to healthy foods and diets.Identified Needs Not Being AddressedWe believe that our plan will allow us to start addressing some of the most pressing health needs in our community, but we recognize that we will not be able to tackle every issue we would like. Two issues in particular are substance abuse and adult obesity. Here are the reasons these health needs are not addressed as part of our plan.Substance Abuse: This community health need is being addressed by over 25 other organizations that offer a variety of substance abuse services including counseling, clinical treatment, rehabilitation, and social support for substance users. Join Together Northern Nevada also regularly convenes organizations for community wide efforts related to substance abuse.Adult Obesity: As part of Renown Health's high-quality healthcare services, we work with all of our adult patients to address health concerns such as obesity. We do this one on one with patients through their doctors, or through visits and referrals to our nutritionists, or through our weekly health newsletter offering healthy lifestyle tips. In addition, we routinely arrange for classes and lectures on topics related to overall health including having speakers on proper exercise and nutrition.
Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 13h: In addition to the federal poverty guidelines, for those not covered by insurance with an annual income between 400-1000% of FPG, the hospital also considers the amount of the hospital bill compared to annual household income. We also consider eligibility for state assistance programs and homelessness or no documentation to establish indigence as factors in determining eligibility.
Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 16i: On every itemized bill and statement sent to the patient is a number they can call to get help with financial assistance. A financial counselor is made available to all self-pay patients upon admission. In addition, Patient Financial Assistance counselors proactively work with self-pay patients to aid in applying for financial assistance. The organization's website lists the phone number a patient can call to speak to a financial counselor.

Part I, Line 3c:In addition to the federal poverty guidelines, for those not covered by insurance with an annual income between 400-1000% of FPG, the hospital also considers the amount of the hospital bill compared to annual household income. We also consider eligibility for state assistance programs and homelessness or no documentation to establish indigence as factors in determining eligibility. All patients are expected to make a financial contribution towards their bill and are subject to pay at least a minimal co-payment so technically no free care is provided.
Part I, Line 6a:The organization's community benefit report is contained in a report prepared by its parent corporation, Renown Health.Part I, Line 5c: The organization budgets the amount of charity care expected in the next year but does not use that estimate as a constraint on the amount of charity care provided.
Part I, Line 7:Charity care expense was converted to cost on line 7a using the cost-to-charge ratio derived from Worksheet 2. Unreimbursed medicaid on line 7b was calculated using the cost-to-charge ratio derived from Worksheet 2. Community health improvement, health professions education, subsidized health services, research and cash and in-kind contributions on lines 7e, 7f, 7g, 7h and 7i are reported from the organization's records.
Part I, Ln 7 Col(f):The amount of bad debt expense removed from total expenses to determine the percentage was $77,285,796.
Part III, Line 2:The amount included on Line 2 reflects the amount at charges reported in the financial statements.
Part III, Line 4:The footnote to the audited financial statements that addresses bad debt is on page 11 of the attached audit financial statements.
Part III, Line 8:The costing methodology for Line 7 uses the ratio of cost to charges from the FY15 as filed by the Medicare cost report.
Part III, Line 9b:Patients in the process of qualifying for state or local indigent programs or the organization's charity program are indicated with a particular payor class/status in the patient accounting system. The patient is not subject to collection efforts while in those classes/statuses.
Part VI, Line 2:Explanation: The organization reviews the current demographic information of the population it serves and the impact those demographics have on the health needs of the community. See explanation 4 for a description of the community. While the demographics start to tell the story of community health needs, Renown Health also consults with community partners and draws from state and local government, non-profits, and school district data sources to assess healthcare needs in the community. Renown Health also used data from the Washoe County Health District to identify health care needs and barriers in its service area. Renown Health's Community Benefit Committee spearheads the development of an annual community needs assessment and corresponding community benefit plan, and oversees the tracking and reporting of community benefit activities. The committee oversees the development or updating of a community needs assessment, and from that assessment develops a community benefit plan that prioritizes and identifies community needs that the organization can support with its finite resources. The needs assessment and community benefit plan then go before the Renown Health Board for review and approval on behalf of all Renown organizations. The needs assessment and the community benefit plan are posted to the organization's website at www.renown.org/about-us/community.
Part VI, Line 3:The organization educates patients on assistance eligibility by posting information on its website regarding its financial assistance program and whenever situations indicate that the patient may be unable to pay for services. The organization has a dedicated Patient Financial Assistance department that works with uninsured patients to establish eligibility for a state or local program. For those that do not qualify for a state or local program, they will refer the patient to the organization's charity care process.
Part VI, Line 4:Washoe County is located in the northwest corner of Nevada and has a population of 440,938 according to the 2015 Nevada Demographer's office. According to the 2015 Nevada Demographer's office the population is Washoe County was 50.4% male and 49.6% female. Over a quarter (33.1%) of the population is under the age of 25. 14.3% of the population is 65+. Washoe County's population was estimated to have the following breakdown as of 2015: 65.8% Caucasian/white, 2.5% African American / black, 6.7% Asian / Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 1.6% American Indian and Alaska Native and 24.1% Hispanic. The Washoe County median household income was estimated to be $54,910 in 2014 according to the American Fact Finder. 15.7% of Washoe County residents are under the federal poverty guidelines in 2014. In June 2015, unemployment was estimated to be at 6.4%. Since the passing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) the number of unisureds have decreased dramatically. There exists, however, a shortage of health care providers.
Part VI, Line 5:See Schedule O, Part III, Line 4a for a description of how the organization furthers its exempt purpose by promoting the health of the community.
Part VI, Line 6:Renown Regional Medical Center is an accredited, 808-licensed bed, general and acute-care hospital serving communities in northern Nevada, northeastern California and the adjacent areas of Oregon and Idaho.
