The Art Therapy Institute is an organization of mental health professionals dedicated to the healing power of the arts. We provide clinical art therapy services to diverse populations, empowering clients to develop their own identities through the art making process. We also offer training to allied professionals and seek to raise awareness in the general community about our profession and the benefits of art therapy. We offer both individual and group art therapy services to children, adolescents, adults and families. Art therapy can help clients express feelings too difficult to talk about, increase self-esteem and confidence, identify feelings and blocks to emotional growth and find an avenue for communication through art.PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt

The Newcomer Art Therapy Project The Art Therapy Institute (ATI) contributes to the health and well-being of the growing population of refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers (collectively, "newcomers") relocating to Orange and Durham counties. Through the Newcomer Art Therapy Project (NATP), ATI provides counseling services to children and adolescents in schools, adults at a local health clinic, and adult women through community-based support groups. These art therapy services help newcomers address issues from their past, succeed in their new school settings, acculturate to North Carolina, and build hopes for the future. During 2015, the NATP served over 165 children, adolescents, and adults. ATI has a contract with the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City schools to serve students in the English as a second language (ESL) program who have difficulties communicating verbally. This program began as a pilot program serving refugee students from Burma, newly immigrated to Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Many of these students had experienced tremendous challenges in their lives, including trauma, life in refugee camps, deaths in their families, and continue to face difficulties in acculturation, self-esteem, and language barriers. Currently ATI is the main resource for all refugee and nonverbal students in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City Schools, and we continue to expand the program each year. In addition, we run refugee women's support groups, and hold weekly office hours for adult refugees at Carrboro Community Health Center and both receive referrals from the doctors and social worker at the clinic. Group and individual art therapy sessions use strengths-based approaches to address the psychological needs of newcomers, including but not limited to directives that explore clients' past experiences, their current acculturation struggles, and their goals for the future. These art therapy services help clients build resilience and hope while reducing anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms. This in turn helps them succeed in school, develop social skills, increase self-esteem and self-confidence, return to jobs and family life, maintain their cultural community ties, and also acculturate into their new host communities. ATI utilizes art shows, community events, and partnerships with other organizations to empower our clients and share their stories with the greater community. All ATI clinicians affiliated with this project are masters level clinicians trained to work with this diverse population. Through NATP, we continue to address the unmet mental health needs of the newcomer population and fill a large gap in mental health services available to this under-resourced and underserved community. In 2015, ATI worked with approximately 165 refugee clients through our school based work, our women's groups, and our Carrboro Community Health Center work combined. Over the course of a week, our clinicians work with refugee clients approximately 65 hours of client contact per week.$0$87,773
Exceptional Children's Program in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro city schools The Art Therapy Institute has a contract with the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City schools to serve students in the Exceptional Children's program. This program includesall Exceptional Children'sself-contained classrooms in the district. The students have a variety of life challenges including autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities, learning impairments, visual impairments, hearing impairments, emotional and behavioral disabilities, and other life challenges. The art therapy serves to help with communication, social skills, emotion regulation, sensory integration and self-expression, as well as gross and fine motor skills. In addition, it is a positive means for the student to gain mastery and success in school. Through the EC Program, we see approximately115 kids over the course of the year, for 45 minutes a week. Many of our students are seen in small groups. Over the course of the week the clinicians have about 30 hours of client contact per week.$0$38,961
Art Therapy Program at Galloway Ridge The Art Therapy Institute's Memory Care Program serves older adults living with Alzheimer's and Dementia. The program provides residents at local assisted living facilities the opportunity to participate in art therapy groups twice a month. Art therapy enables memory care clients to communicate and express themselves in ways that seem to bypass some of the problems of Alzheimer's and Dementia. Since the groups began, residents have explored many art forms and materials to improve their ability to focus and develop a sense of mastery and control. The group approach offers the artists the opportunity to build relationships and socially connect while awakening a sense of curiosity and interest through self-expression. The Memory Care Program encourages group members to honor their life stories and expand their sense of purpose. Artists in the Memory Care Program love sharing their artwork both inside and outside of the groups. In the groups, artists always enjoy sharing their accomplishments with one another and providing encouragement and support while others share. Often, the artists express a sense of pride and increased self esteem as they review their successes. Group members have their art exhibited in an in-house gallery. The gallery provides artists with a rewarding sense of accomplishment and acts as a consistent reminder of their capabilities and strengths. The gallery was created to celebrate the artists and provide a space to share with caregivers, family members, staff and other residents. The group created notecards featuring their original artwork to sell to raise funds for ALZNC and continued financial support for the Memory Care Program. 2 sessions per month, 90-120 minutes per session, 8-10 residents per group (Estimated 25-30 total) "The Memory Care Art Therapy Program encouragesresidents to try new things, and they are often surprised by their beautiful art. The residents love the painting group and even the ones who say they have never painted are impressed with their accomplishments. Sharing offers group members the opportunity to see, value and appreciate unique features of each work of art. The families and caregivers also share an appreciation for the Memory Care Art Therapy Program. It is a concrete way to see how their loved ones spend their days. I have seen residents wandering and upset and calmed during Art Therapy." Life Enrichment Coordinator, Galloway Ridge$0$1,841
Community Arts and Peer Support Group The Arts and Peer Support Group emerged in 2011 from the collaboration of an expressive therapist from the Art Therapy Institute in Carrboro, NC, a social worker from the School of Social Work at UNC-Chapel Hill, and a group of artists from the Triangle Area who hoped for a space to come together in the community, create art, and support one another in the process of mental health recovery. Together, we have explored many art forms (painting, drawing, weaving, collage, sculpture, photography, poetry, music, and others), and in so doing, have come to know, care for, and heal each other. We have exhibited our art in the community, and have shared our work with students, professionals, and other partners. We are committed to maintaining our free, weekly group as a safe space for creative and reflective work, and to remaining "fearlessly out of line" by celebrating ourselves as artists rather than as damaged people, continually challenging the stigma that shapes our public conversation about mental illness.Groups consist of approximately 8-10 members and meet weekly for 2 hours per week. Over the course of the year we have worked with approximately 30 adults.$0$743
Other Community Outreach UNC Pediatric Oncology Project ATI's art therapy program for the pediatric department of Hematology/Oncology at UNC Chapel Hill brings art to children with cancer and blood disorders. One of the main focuses of this program is using the Apple iPad with the children being treated in the department. The Apple iPad is a great way to do art with children who have cancer because it is very easy to keep clean and easily transported. We typically see about 16 kids a week for about 30 minutes each, totaling about 8-9 hours a week. Duke Art Therapy Programming: The Digital Art Therapy program serves inpatient children on Duke's Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (PBMT) Unit. This weekly program provides children with a much-needed expressive outlet, while maintaining the safety precautions necessary on a sterile unit. This work also offers opportunities for relaxation and distraction during medical procedures. [2 hrs per week, 1-4 clients served each week, about 150 client sessions per year] The Duke Outpatient Art Therapy program serves PBMT out-paitents at the Durham Ronald McDonald House. Art-based group sessions offer children a chance to express themselves, socialize with peers, learn new skills, and find support in the community. A variety of art materials are used, and directives often touch on documenting and processing the cancer journey. [One 2 hour session per month, 4-8 clients served each session, about 50 clients served annually]$0$1,078
