Form 990, Part I, Line 1 and Part III, Line 1John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum ("Library") is dedicated to the memory of our nation's thirty-fifth president and to all those who through the art of politics seek a new and better world. The Library, which is administered by the National Archives and Records Administration, receives an annual federal appropriation for building maintenance and a portion of its personnel costs. The appropriation from Congress amounts to 33% of the Library and the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation's annual operating budget. The balance of their financial support is provided by income generated from museum admission fees, museum store sales, usage fees for the Library's meeting facilities and, through the generosity of thousands of private individuals, corporations, and foundations who donate money and in-kind services to the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation ("Foundation"). In 2015, the Foundation contributed approximatley 48%, or $10.8 million, of the Library and Foundation's combined $22.5 million operating budget, including in-kind programmatic support. The development and administrative costs of the operations of the library and museum is roughly estimated to be 13% of the combined budget costs. The Foudation is united with the Library in a common mission to promote the ideal of public service and political participation and to perpetuate President Kennedy's own belief that one person can make a diference and that every person should try. The private financial support provided by the Foundation enables the federal government to expand the Library's research and archival capacity, to undertake marketing and public information projects, to offer intern and research fellowship programs, to enhance its museum and exhibits, and to offer nationally recognized educational and public programming. Mission Statement The primary mission of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation is to support the work of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum whose core function is to collect, preserve, and make accessible for research the documents, audiovisual materials, and historical artifacts of President Kennedy, his family, and his contemporaries. The Foundation, representing a wide variety of constituencies within the general public, works closely with the National Archives and Records Administration to develop programs that advance the study and understanding of President Kennedy's life and the times in which he lived; and that promote a greater appreciation of America's political and cultural heritage, the process of governing, and the importance of public service. In addition to its support of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the Foundation directly sponsors programs and activities that help people understand the major challenges facing democracy today; that inspire current and future generations to political participation and public service; and that promote debate and discussion of issues at the heart of contemporary democracy that relate to the legacy of President John F. Kennedy. Long Range Strategic Plan Vision To inspire the world to "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Mission To inspire public service, civic responsibility, civil rights, scientific discovery and creative cultural pursuits by preserving and promoting the legacy of President John F. Kennedy; to engage new and established audiences so they may learn how to translate these legacies into action. Values The Board values the ideals articulated by President John F. Kennedy and seeks to promote civil discourse, civil rights, civic literacy, diversity, public and community service, and responsible citizenship. The Board commits to support the efforts of the John F. Form 990, Part III, Line 4aEducational Support $2,111,286 During the past year, the Foundations support for education and public program initiatives has enabled the Library to reach diverse audiences -- from young children to adults -- both onsite and at a distance through the worldwide web and other media. These offerings have furthered an understanding of President and Mrs. Kennedys legacy for all ages; enhanced civic education and service learning for young people; and provided stimulating professional development opportunities for educators. JFK Challenge App - The Foundation launched its first-ever iPad app, the JFK Challenge, on February 12, 2015 to coincide with President's Day. The JFK Challenge brings American history to life for children ages 8-12 by turning them into NASA and Peace Corps trainees ready to accept President Kennedy's charge to accomplish great things and make a difference in the world. As virtual astronauts in the Space Race mission, children travel back in time to train for the Apollo 11 flight. They try on a spacesuit, steer the spacecraft, and explore the Moon's surface while learning about NASA, space travel, and the first moon walk. Back on Earth, the Peace Corps mission takes young volunteers on a trip to 1961 in Colombia, where they learn Spanish words, the local culture and world geography. They use these skills and knowledge to navigate mazes and other games as they help build pathways for clean drinking water and houses in the virtual village. Combining exciting animation with primary sources from the Library's archives, this immersive app fosters interest in the sciences, exploration, volunteerism and cultural exchange, while providing a window into how John F. Kennedy inspired a generation. #Suit Up! - To mark the 50th anniversary of the first spacewalk, the Library collaborated with NASA and its special mobile "museum on wheels" on July 11th to showcase not only the history of NASA and ties to President Kennedy's legacy, but also to share new technologies about space initiatives. NASA astronaut Clay Anderson and space suit engineer Su Curley captivated children as well as adults with presentations on contemporary space topics and hands-on activities. Approximately 400 people attended #Suit Up!. Celebrate! - During 2015 approximately 2,156 people attended the Library's 12th annual Celebrate! series. The Celebrate! series presented an exciting roster of seven programs ranging from Hispanic and American folk and gospel music to African and Irish dance traditions, introducing our youngest visitors, including members of the BoysGirls' Clubs, to the Library through this program commemorating President and Mrs. Kennedy's legacy of support for the arts and their appreciation of diverse cultural traditions. Race for Space Pop-up Cart - This pop-up cart is a new docent-facilitated gallery program that was launched in early 2015 and has engaged visitors of all ages with short, hands-on activities on the inner workings of the Freedom 7 space craft and Alan Shepards tasks including steering the capsule, looking through a periscope and reporting their findings to mission control using the transcript from the actual flight. Sources of Inspiration: History through the Arts & the Lives of Artists This conference for teachers and school librarians of grades 3-8 focused on how to help meet students needs for inspiration in a complex, often frightening world and for creative ways to engage them with issues of concern. The program - co-sponsored by the Library's Education department and the John F. Kennedy National Historic Site - served 100 participants from the region. Recognizing that participants will use conference and related online materials with their classes, through the "multiplier effect," approximately 3,300 students and other educators were potentially reached by this program. History, Civic Education and Service Learning Activities -The annual Make a Difference Award for middle school grades highlighted the achievements of regional student volunteers, while the Profile in Courage Essay Contest put a spotlight on the research and writing talents of national high school essayists (1,913) who identified outstanding individuals who have demonstrated political courage. And, more than 700 urban, rural, and suburban high school students, acting as economic advisors to the president, co-created a discretionary U.S. Federal Budget in the annual simulation program. Guided school programs - More than 6,456 elementary, middle, and high school students participated in in-depth three-hour Museum programs and docent-facilitated school offerings featuring JFKs life story, his Inaugural Address, civil rights, Cold War, and other targeted, curricular-relevant topics. Student Leadership Conference - A record number of youth (122) from enrichment programs including Upward Bound attended the Library's annual Student Leadership Conference targeted to enhancing leadership skills. Collaborative Leadership, the theme of this years program, featured workshop sessions on writing, the budget, and public presentation, as well as a keynote address from a young neuroscientist, a former Upward Bound participant. Public Forum Series - The Library is proud to be the largest convener of public conversations in the City of Boston. Our forums are the flagship program that helps define the Library and the City of Boston as a major center for political thought, debate, and exchange. Our forums bring to life Jacqueline Kennedys vision for the Library. When Mrs. Kennedy first announced the establishment of the Library, she noted "It will be a vital center of education and exchange and thought, which will grow and change with the times. a living center of study of the times in which [JFK] lived, which will inspire the ideals of democracy and freedom in young people all over the world." In 2015, the Kennedy Library continued to bring Mrs. Kennedy's vision to life by presenting 30 forums featuring nearly 80 speakers. These guests are leaders and experts from various fields and discussed diverse topics, such as law, government, healthcare, education, politics, human and civil rights, immigration, international affairs, science, journalism, the arts, literature, music, and history. Highlights of our 2015 forums include master historian David McCullough speaking on his latest release, The Wright Brothers; a discussion between David Axelrod and award winning journalist Mike Barnicle on Axelrods book, Believer: My Forty Years in Politics; a screening of the documentary, James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket, with filmmaker Karen Thorsen, Tufts professor Peniel Joseph, poets Nikky Finney and Rose Styron, and James Baldwin's niece, Aisha Karefa-Smart; CNNs John King with Boston Mayor Marty Walsh on his first year in office; veteran broadcast journalist Bob Schieffer with WBZ-TV News anchor Lisa Hughes on Schieffers distinguished career; Boston Globe editor Brian McGrory with Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker to discuss his first 100 days in office; and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and Harvard Law School Dean Martha Minow on legal challenges facing the Commonwealth. Approximately 12,080 people attended forums at the Library; 7,047 viewed the live webcast. International Symposium - On March 18, 2015, the Foundation presented its first international symposium on President Kennedy, titled The Torch Has Been Passed: JFK's Legacy Today. Drawing on the themes of President Kennedy's iconic inaugural address challenging citizens to give back, push the boundaries of science and innovation, and seek a more peaceful world, this half-day event celebrated the ideals he championed and examined how his words and deeds can help guide new generations in solving critical problems that we face today. The event was held in Okuma Auditorium at Waseda University in Shinjuku, Japan. The Torch Has Been Passed: JFK's Legacy Today brought together distinguished American and Japanese policymakers, scholars, and business and industry leaders for two panel discussions: "The New Frontier; Innovation, Inspiration and Inclusion" explored the technological and scientific inquiries that resulted from President Kennedy's initiatives around the space program, along with the removal of barriers to innovation and inclusion that stemmed from strides made in the U.S. Civil Rights movement during the Kennedy Administration and "A Strategy of Peace: Crisis Diplomacy & Non-proliferation" considered how President Kennedys ideals and vision still resonate as inspiration for peace in our time and inform modern thinking about the challenges currently facing world leaders today. Former U. S. President Bill Clinton delivered the keynote address, followed by special remarks from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. U. S. Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy provided welcoming remarks.
